My mom has been missing since March 3 of 2000. She either went missing from Edmonton Alberta or Vancouver British Columbia. I miss her so much I’m 32 years old now and I haven’t seen her since I was four years old. Her name is Linda May Scott born February 14.

Alice Evonic this has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with culture as these are primarily protistutes and drug users getting killed as they put themselves in danger. How can you police an “underground” element of the population that constantly in hiding? The focus should be on helping the high percentage of young native women who sell their bodies for sex and how to help them.

I’m a young cree woman currently living in Winnipeg and yes, this is a very sad issue that still goes strong today, as sad as that is. As someone who has had female family members go missing, be murdered, and abused/assaulted, it’s absolutely heartbreaking. My mother was one of those missing girls at one point. She was found a few days later in a ditch almost lifeless, her abusers still roam free nearby. I wish we lived in a world where not only my people were treated peacefully, but where we all were treated peacefully.

why is it that our government does not show the same level of care and compassion towards its indigenous population as they do towards new comers/immigrants. I say this as a woman of color and a first generation immigrant in Canada. what is Canada doing exactly? looks to me like they are trying to help the problem. the community is stepping up and trying to deal with this issue. the police are tracking and jailing the “johns”. a big problem is the poor girls growing up in physically and sexually abusive homes. its not the average canadian or government official who is abusing them, its apparently their own family. and then there are problems with drug abuse and i dont think this helps at all. awareness helps, and what the community was doing trying to scare the “johns” off from the prostitution streets. the girls really gotta stop putting themselves into those kinds of situations too. i dont know the full answer but man please dont just blame the average Canadian. progress is a two way street and it can be hard to help people who sometimes dont want to change, but like i said the community seems to be unifying and doing a better job at calling out the “johns” and trying to watch out for and guide aright the Indigenous women. all that said its a horrifying nasty disgusting tragedy thats for sure.

My heart hurts watching all that they had to go through and are still experiencing. No one should have to scrape the bottom of a river for there loved ones but thank god they do the work they do. It's heartbreaking that law enforcement is not doing enough to protect them. The foster system is a mess and does nothing to really set the children who "phase out" of the system up for success. Like teaching them how to pay bills, get a job, apply for school, but even more than that how to take care of oneself when things are unstable. For instance if someone was going through a mental break or some sort of stress they have not been taught how to cope properly and turn to substance abuse, violent relationships, sex exploitation, ect. There are so many things that need to change and it's hard not to feel overwhelmed and bitter. But I hope the good people of Canada will continue their fight for justice and resolution so that one day there will be no need for a resolution. Families and women should be able to walk freely with out fear of violence or murder.

War between native people and government has always been the there. The government has no interest to save Native Americans .but now and then they have to show interest because the whole world is watching. I say they had no interest because a lot of damage has been done. they have a lot of contaminated Mines that they never properly sealed, the school's barely get any funding. A lot of poor lighting and Facilities on the reservation. The main street in my town is just filled with nothing but abandon and decomposing homes and structures, just because there's asbestos and they classified them as historical buildings, which they actually belonged to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, I'm sure they don't want to spend money hiring construction Crews to demolish and reconstruct better units for the community. Those structures been up since 60+ years. Only people that go in them are meth heads or drunks who want to pass out. Doors and windows are gone, people set fires to them constantly. And this Main Street is where the hospital is located and what is the schools are located for children so it's pretty sad when you see updated School structures and hospitals surrounded by abandoned buildings. It also feels like a conspiracy when junk food is a lot cheaper and there's so many deals for them on the rez to help promote obesity and diabetes. 3 out of 5 sotres here have no fresh fruits or vegetables. everything is just packaged or processed with a lot of sugar and salt. Even the Housing Authority policies for public dwelling units, they also forbid homeowners from possessing firearms. I mean I'm disabled and I can't engage in any physical conduct. How would I be able to defend myself or my home if someone broke in and I was unarmed? Overall I could buy a firearm and keep one home but if I end up using it i will be in violation of the housing policy and I can be evicted from my home just because of self-defense. it's like these Housing Authority offices want residents to be victimized. Idk. Alot of these policy and changes can be done but most of it relies on the government/ tribal officials to take action. Which we barely see. The town I'm in is installing streetlight our of town, wtf? What about all the lack of lighting in the neighborhoods in town. Seriously we only have two street lights on our street and their both on one end.

Firstly, because many indigenous people are mixed race, it's really an issue of nations, or nationality. Second, if you look at the demographics, the indigenous population is actually growing at a much higher rate than the non-aboriginal population in Canada and is projected to make up about 10% of the total Canadian population by 2036. Genocide is a misnomer. The real problem is the low status of indigenous women.
@griz063
@griz063 5 лет назад
1pyroace1 Put your anger back in your pants and ask yourself just WHO is destroying this race? If you instantly fall into a "white shaming" mindset then you're not getting the big picture. I understand the atrocities my ancestors may have visited upon their ancestors -- just as I understand the atrocities that happened the other way around (Rousseau not withstanding!). Currently the average Native individual receiving about 75% more social assistance than the average non-Native. We're talking grants, bursaries, special programs, special dispensations, special exemptions, special powers that the average non-Native Canadian just cannot access. Perhaps a combination of the coddling, and the resulting failure to address internal problems is as much to blame as "white-ness"? Terrible things happen when anyone is cloistered away so they don't have to step up and incorporate into the unified society. We can point to arterial bleeders and apply bandaids. But it might be good to learn just why so much "arterial bleeding" is happening in the first place and stop that. And the problems start . . . at home.

I've seen a number of similar videos to this one and two conflicting things become apparent. First the overwhelming majority of these women were/are being victimized by indigenous men, and very often by close or extended family members. Second, that reality is scrupulously avoided to create the impression that the opposite is true. By slanting the report this way, the authors are adding one more act of exploitation on these women. Not to say the government (police, social services, prosecutors) shouldn't be doing more. They certainly should. But in the hierarchy of duties and responsibilities, the behaviors and attitudes of indigenous men come first. And THAT should have had a larger segment in this report.

Everyone's mad at the federal government about this but... what exactly would you have them do? As a nation we've offered money, social programs, schools, money, and more money, free university, more social programs. It's not solved the problem. The kids in foster care are removed from dangerous households. "Keeping them with their family" sounds nice but means keeping them around drugs and men who are violent. That's why there's an inquiry. Becuase throwing money and resources hasnt solved the problem yet. The assistance programs need to be restructured. Canada systematically pushed indigenous people into poverty. It is very sad how the police and other agencies ignore reports and make assumptions when it is involving Aboriginal Canadians. It is very sad and it breaks parents hearts. Now indigenous babies bodies are showing up, from the days of forced assimilation of indigenous kids. 100's are showing up and the church has been hiding it. Those two crimes, years apart, show the same descrimination and the same mentality of seeing them less important. It is a big shame on Canada's reputation.
