I was honoured to be invited to the grand opening of the new Canadian Canoe Museum - 2024. They have done an amazing job, so many canoes on display (and in storage), and I rekindled so many friendships throughout the day. The canoe community is so blessed.

Very awesome. I wish Ralph Frese was around to enjoy this museum. He was a gentleman and historian and ambassador of the canoe. Thank you for the mini tour. Cheers from Chicago.

I agree. He was amazing. I stayed at his place once while presenting to the local canoe club. I stayed in the basement and saw all the historic canoe material he had collected. It was amazing. I didn't sleep much that night. Instead, I looked through things like old manuscripts for Sigurd Olson. Wow.

@@TheHappyCamper We chatted many times. His knowledge and enthusiasm was contagious. I only hung out in the shop outback, and tried to soak up every thing I could. I’ll never forget him and his ever present red voyageurs toque. Legend.

So glad it's open again. My only disappointment last year was discovering the museum was closed for my house sit in Buckhorn.

The CCM is a great idea. BUT... the admission fee is horrendous. They charge as much as the major museums do, if not more. But there's more: - The CCM doesn't have family pricing. - More and more museums won't ask a dime for attendants supporting persons with disabilities receive free admission. the CCM doesn't care... - and so on ... The problem is something we often see with volunteers, enthusiasts, etc. running a "business". They base their decisions after looking around, but don't take in consideration the difference between them and the others. The CCM is not the fine arts, not the MAC, the ROM, etc. I understand they certainly have important overhead, but let's be honest, it's not anything near what the major Museums have to face. So you can't ask for the same as them. The CCM also omit to take in consideration several other important factors. For example, the CCM is not in an urban environment. They are very remote being in Peterborough. People will have way more fees to get there than to any major museums located downtown Montreal, Toronto, etc.. They simply forgot to take in consideration what potential visitors will have to deal with. Let's talk about a family from Toronto. - 1h45 drive (one way) - about $80 is gas - about $72 in food if they only eat once So that's 3hrs drive total, plus $152 in extra spending (minimum) to then have to pay an additional $80??? $232 total for a visit at the CCM. Imagine for someone coming from Montreal. In comparison, a visit at the AGOM will cost $60, the prestigious ROM will ask $$85.50 Bottom line, their pricing doesn't take in consideration the essentials and it becomes a major turn-off for most people. And this causes a major problem. the less visitors, the less free marketing/advertising. Having a better pricing will get way more visitors and way more people telling their friends they should go visit too. Thus: much more money in bank at the end of each month. The #1 rule in business is simple: Have the most money/profit at the end of the month. And often, you don't get that with a high price, but by the volume. That's business 101 and that's why the CMM should *strongly* consider hiring a consultant to help them with that. And also to show them how to increase their revenues by other sources than the admission fees, the best way.
