I think my biggest gardening issue is lack of time and attention. Weeds always sprout up when I'm too busy some week and then I just never get control of it again. Every year, I hope I'll have the time, but there are always so many projects, and a grocery store full of food that I know will bail me out. ;)

@@northerngirlhobbies LOL. THAT'S actually my second biggest gardening issue. When I DO make the time to weed, I have the hardest time pulling anything because (as you mentioned) most weeds are pretty useful too for either medicine or food. As I'm weeding, I usually have a mouth full of greens as I go, grazing my weeds (slowly) away. ;)

First off, I fully agree with @Diebulfrog79..... Also there's a lot of the mental and psychological aspects that do not get talked about enough in the preparedness community. I can understand the ranking system to give some people out there a sense of accomplishment or perhaps an opportunity, to come to the realization that some preps and preppers are not created equally. Which can be a harsh reality for some people to admit. For myself, I admit I have no desire to harm a human being. Its not my desire to be some warlord setting upon a throne of skulls, I do recognize that some people out there have that goal. So while I tend to my garden trying to maintain, what sense of peace and tranquility I have in my life. When I tend to my garden these days, Im thinking about ways protect my garden, how to demoralize and dispatch those that will desire to raid my garden. I have no desire to embrace the void of indifference, but that doesn't mean I won't. "Know thyself"

Always consider the source of your information. My opinion: Canadian Prepper does fear porn as entertainment (and it is entertaining) and also uses some of his videos as a way of slipping in promotion for his business of selling preparedness merchandise. My opinion: the most important factors for surviving a potential disaster or sudden emergency are accurate and timely info about immediate dangers, situational awareness, ability to calm yourself and think logically and practical knowledge of how to deal with the most common emergencies where you live (such as electric grid outages, tornado warnings, rioting, blizzard warnings, wildfire warnings, hurricane warnings, etc.). My opinion: If you are trained in basic CPR, first aid and how to use a fire extinguisher; have a paper map of two tested evacuation routes from where you live or work, keep $100 cash (or the equivalent in your country's currency) handy at all times, have one credit card that is not maxed out, listen to the weather news daily, keep in your well-maintained vehicle a charging cord for your smart phone and never let your vehicle's fuel tank get below half full, you have what you need for dealing with the kinds of emergencies you are most likely to encounter. Especially for those of us living in suburban U.S.A. My opinion: You do not need to become a subsistence farmer, felling trees with an axe and butchering hogs you raised on corn you grew and cooking on a wood stove. Most of us do not have the skill sets, primitive tools and level of physical fitness for such a life style. Nor do most of us have use of the agricultural land in the kind of climate suitable for such a way of life. My opinion: Buying a lot of exotic gear (freeze dryer machine, night scope for rifle, NBC gas mask...) is a waste of money. These items would not even make it onto my list of the stuff I need to have at home or in my vehicle in order to cope with the most likely disasters and emergencies I may encounter where I live here in the Mohave Desert. As long as I have a well-maintained vehicle with working AC and at least half a tank of fuel plus some bottles of drinking water, I can leave here during the hottest summer day if the local power grid fails and be hundreds of miles away and in a different climate within half a day of driving and I can stay in a comfortable motel room until the power grid for my neighborhood comes back on line. That is practical preparedness and does not cost much and does not require exotic gear or being a homestead farmer.

I agree with the utility of the very simple "preps" that you describe. And for most bumps in life (that we're familiar with on a regular basis) those preps WILL do people just fine. As a long time prepper, the types of emergencies that you described are things that I focused on years ago, and have later turned to other possible bumps in the road and have been working preps against those things. I'd reject that being prepared for things other than what is normal is a waste of time. For people living in Ukraine a few years ago, being ready for what was normal for them, was not enough to get them anywhere near ready for what was coming. Even the "extreme" things that I engage in are no guarantee at all against such severe circumstances. So I'd just push back against that. Just because something hasn't been previously normal or common, doesn't mean that it's not at all worth prepping against - especially when the preps can be fun and enriching. My woodstove that I use for cooking (for example) is a WONDERFUL way to heat a home. It's warm and cozy all winter and (IMO) there's no better way to warm cold hands and toes after coming in from the winter chill. Our solar panels aren't just for emergencies, but also allow us to save a lot of money on utility bills and prevent blackouts (which ARE frequent) from being much of a hassle. Additionally, our large pantry allows me to save a ton of money by stocking up on things when they're on sale. Pretty much everything I eat is something that was bought when it was on discount (and I bought a bunch of it). And the pantry also avoids me having the hassle of running out of some ingredient when I'm cooking. So preps (even "extreme preps") aren't only beneficial for unusual emergencies, but also can enrich every day life.

I plan to feed the chickens anything available....road kill...fish parts...acorns...any meat of opportunity. Chickens are omnivores, they will eat anything. One of the funniest/interesting insights into the far right prepper mind I have ever seen was curtesy of a RU-vid video from about 8 years ago. Wish I could remember the channel. It was about networking. This guy who was prepping for a war against liberals warned that the right shouldn’t feel safe just because they have all the guns. He said that the left is so good at organizing that the left during a civil war will show up to your door with so many people that your guns won’t be able to stop them. He at the time was trying to inform his audience about the downfalls of thinking every man is an island who can Rambo his way out of anything, he wanted the right to build coalitions with one another. Long story short, joke is on him because you cant outlast runaway climate desalination.

I scored 54 but then there were some categories that couldnt apply , for instance in the uk guns are heavily restricted so no legal access to hand guns, assault rifles and heavy restriction of any other firearms, BUT military service and time spent using firearms in the US means Iam comfortable around and using firearms, this means i scored 3 not 10. next comes hunting, this because of the gun laws and regulations (you can learn archery but unless in somewhere like scotish highlands you cant use it to hunt), hunting is not allowed and fishing is strictly regulated, though I know how to so i scored 3 out of 10. so i figure for a country where gun and hunting laws are prohibitive but expeience knowledge iscounted that makes my 54 equal to a 68 to74. if SHTF happened and law broke down getting a fire arm and ammo would become more possible and my past experience mould put me at an advantage over looters who just picked up weapons with no training. i think the money point was useless and love that your lad picked up on the flaw in the millionair bunker plan. something i have said going back to the cold war, unless you dig, build and hide your bunker with just those going to use it, your bunker is useless. imagine you spend $2m having a bunker built and outfitted , heres the flaw, unless your a pre BC egyptian pharoe, your bunker is going to take minimum 6 workers to build, 4 delivery drivers, architect, , planning officer, 2 electricians, 1 plumber, air filtration company(4 men), solar installers (2 men), 2 security installers. thats a min of 22 people who regardless of confidentiality clauses , may when the time comes and they dont have bunkers , lets say bring 1 other each, thats 44 desperate people who know the location of your bunker, its construction, layout. strengths, weaknesses, tech back doors, and any possible deliberate flaws, you are sealed in your cammoflaged bunker behind 3"titanium doors, encased in 1 foot thick concrete and steel walls with food and water for 3 years, hermeticaly sealed against gassand biological agents. but along come 44 people who know the rescue weak points or deliberately weak points, or failing that, know where your air inlet /outlets are that they can block to force you to suffocate or open up.

During the Great Depression of the 1929 era White Tail Deer nearly went extinct in N. America. Although they were everywhere and commonly seen before the Depression when their first census was taken in 1933 by then there were very few left and it took decades of managed hunting before their numbers grew again. During the depression millions of Americans looked on them, trout and bass as a food source and the nubers still alive years later was very small. Add in the nuclear war scenario and the effect of Radioactive Fallout on those animals and suffice to say even 3 days later most of them will be dead. Birds too. There will be rats and some burrowers left, buy if they come out of their burrows too soon and make diet of fallout covered plants or corpses, most of those will be dead in a week too. About the only species we know of basically immune to radiation is the cockroach. Yes they will have lots of dead stuff to feed on, but how many pounds of cockaroach per week does it take to keep a human alive? Most of those whose approach is I will go to the woods and live off what I can hunt or fish will within a week begin to realize that wasn't a good choice. It usually takes about planted 5 acres to keep a family of 2 alive. Skinny people if there are 3. Beware of plant blight. Then there is the radioactive top soil problem and the plants absorbing things you don't want in your food. People who initially survived Hiroshima and Nagasaki mostly did okay because their food after the bombs was imported to them from elsewhere. But just look at what happened on Bikini when the islanders were allowed back in and tried to feed themselves there. Deaths. Lots of them. If you scrape up the radioactive topsoil a) don't breath the dust. B) put that Hot pile of dirt where? C) replace it with what? Simply covering the soil with 8 inches of not irradiated soil sounds good, but hardly any prepper keeps 1,000 tons of stored clean topsoil in their bunker.

Polly tunnels would be a good option, a lot of gardens use them to good effect without the threat of nuclear war. Honestly though selling everything and living on a large sailboat would give you a way higher chance of surviving that kind of situation. I dont know why sailing isn't more talked about by preppers, yachts are totally off grid, generate their own power and can convert sea water in to fresh. You can catch fish as you move and could set up gardens on remote islands without anyone ever knowing about them. Seems like a no brainer to me

@@PraxisPrepper Yes that is a problem. In the TV series Fallout they revert back to their original size, about the size of a small dog. Fantasy. They have found families of cockroach living in Nuclear reactors. The ones found there are the same size as the ones in NY or LA tenements. Like I wrote radiation doesn't do much to them. Their DNA is too simple for it's function to be bothered much by an occasional gene damage. Yeah okay an occasional blind one or missing some legs. Not a problem, the others will eat the ones that are weak. But yes, they probably would be an unsafe meal. I think feeding humanity a year or two after the disaster will be one of the biggest problems. Maybe also throw in a nuclear winter and how 2 or 3 years of snow hampers planting crops.

If after 3 years, things still look dire, I suppose we can (and likely would) end up ending our journey there, but at least we'd have a shot. Hopefully humanity doesn't go down that road. Yeah, there are a few people out there that brag about how they plan to become moochers in an emergency situation. I really don't know how well most of them would fare. Clearly, history suggests that some of them could become war-lord sorts of figures, but there can only be so many predators like that in a system and a LOT of them would kill each other off. Overall, IDK how honorable of a plan it is to intentionally plan to be a parasite when (with a little effort) it's possible for those people not not only avoid being parasites, but to actually become assets to their communities. I mean, I think it has a lot of utility for inspiring self-improvement and is useful for starting a discussion, but Nate himself would be the first to agree that it's not a conclusive evaluation of everything that goes into preparedness. You may well have assets and advantages that aren't covered in it.

Nate still does the classic prepping videos too, but few people tune in for them and they don't get pushed by the algorithm (based both on his experiences and also my own). It's a case of him providing what the market seems to want. Nate's often the first to lament how he'd prefer to be doing more "how to" videos vs so many "the state of the situation" videos. Personally... I like his "the state of the situation" videos because I find his vids a very quick and easy way to gather up the news of the day (related to the run up to war) without having to do all the sifting myself. He's never left his roots. People just rarely bother to pay any attention to them. His last video was one on the challenges of learning firearms techniques, and the one before that was about water purification. I think his video prior to that was food related maybe??? I'm not 100% sure on that though. My main point though is that CP (and I) both create videos on specific skills and knowledge related to this topic. People just tend to pass on watching those videos, only watch the videos on current events (aka doom and gloom) and criticize both of us for "only" making those videos. I agree with you on the age thing. I'm more fit than most people half my age. but that said, fit or not, a sprained ankle now when I'm in my 40s takes a LOT longer to heal than when I was in my 20s. I actually am nursing one right now that's been a pain in my workflow for the past month with me repeatedly thinking it's "good enough to use again" and then re-injuring it because I didn't wait long enough. @@jeffburton4576 Anyone who drops Vanilla Ice references is OK in my book! I think I've been following CP about since 2015 or so, and yeah his message has gotten a little bit "nearer term" since covid I agree. I think that has more to do with the evolving realities of the world though, and not so much any change in heart on his part. He's the absolute first to agree (he and I have chatted about this) that his thumbnails and titles are designed to bring eyeballs in the door with the "immanency" of the message. But I think his videos themselves are pretty rational and on point, so I keep tuning in to him. I think of him as my research assistant. He goes out and scrubs the news for stories of relevance, and reports on them. Then I sift through what he's found and come to my own conclusions about how close things actually are. He saves me a TON of time doing the news sifting though. So I appreciate that. Hey, if you're new to my channel and like sci fi, I made a fun sci fi preparedness series a few years ago called "Alien Invasion" that you might enjoy. I also have a whole playlist on building my new preparedness-minded home, which isn't as fun as the alien series, but is useful for anyone looking to do the same.

He still does the "how to" videos too, but on his channel (and mine as well) people just don't watch them, so RU-vid doesn't push them out. This video I did (with the CP title and thumbnail) got well over 2k views in less than a day. My last "how to" video has been out for 2 days and it's gotten 270 views. People (generally) don't want the informative how to videos, so hosts don't feel super motivated to make them. I still do... but I don't feel driven as though a ton of people are interested in watching them. I just do them to share with a small group, and spend an appropriate amount of time on them given that fact.

Congratulations on your 82! I watched CP last night and found It to be an interesting little assessment tool, but like you pointed out, most of us already know our area(s) of weakness. I would like to see an expanded evaluation that included things like communications, ability prepare foods other than canned and freeze-dried items, foraging, growing, making and using plants for medicine, little red hen skills (grow your wheat, grind your wheat, THEN make bread), repairing/making clothes and shoes, is there at least 1 skilled medical person in you family or community... I bet this group could come up with an expanded list for the individual, family and community levels. Maybe more of a detailed list of questions within each topic with just a yes/not option and 1 point for each yes. There also needs to be a way to weight each topic, although there is some disagreement among homesteaders & preppers about which area is the most important. Maybe someone could start a community google doc that everyone could go into a add questions into the categories. That said, I would STILL already know the areas of weakness for myself and my family and what I/we need to work on. But self-assessment tools are a fun diversion after a long day of gardening and other daily work. Take care of your ankle. It took me 2 years to fully recover from my last bad sprain back in my early 60's because I just would not stay off it long enough for it to fully heal. When the time is right, physical therapy does wonders to help strengthen the appropriate muscles. I now wear high cut boots that support my ankles pretty much all the time. Makes for hot feet, but the added support is worth it.

I'm hoping to still be able to do a planned hike this July that goes from 2000 feet to 6000 feet. Even in shape without injuries that mountain has always left me feeling pretty sore by the end of the 4000 feet up and 4000 feet down. I hope my ankle will be back by then.

As a Gedankenexperiment, it is of mild interest. I came in at about 50 on this, strong in some areas very weak in others. At 68, I am not super prepper, not super anything anymore if I ever was. Unlike most younglings I understand the truce of the bear, most younglings do not even have a clue. Failure here will kill more people than hunger or exposure. Most of us older boomers are loners, not so much by choice but because if you have friends they tend to die off. I think most preppers are whistling in the wind and assume far too much that stocks of beans bandaids and bullets make them safe. Nothing is farther from the truth, in some way its makes them less safe. Granted I would prefer to have preps in excess myself rather than not but not for safety just for comfort. My family can do the 3 month thing if we are not over ran by mauraders or the golden horde. After that it is only a matter of time, we will starve but while not something that fills me full of joy, we got more life than at least 90 percent of humanity did, at time of plenty. So I can count that up as a win. I do not think CP stands a chance in hell if it goes tits up, he is too well known, his government is even more corrupt than ours. I hope he has a well stocked and well hidden bug out and knows when to cut his losses. I am not sure he understands the truce of the bear either. We are all too often our own worst enemy.
