Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RU-vid video every Tuesday & Friday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT on Twitch.

When I was a kid about 70 years ago the 'white sticks' actually had a red tip and were actually called 'candy cigarettes'. It was only after the anti-smoking campaign started that they stopped calling them this. We also were able to buy 'candy tobacco'. Long strings of coconut covered in cocoa powder and sugar.
@ronfehr7899

I also remember the time when they were called candy cigarettes. Although I've never smoked, I do remember having them.

I'm not that old..but still remember both...But you understand why they have changed things like that. As it is my father died from smoking related conditions...he was just 47.

In the UK they were called sweet cigarettes and came in a pack that looked like a pack of 10 cigarettes, even had a 'cigarette card' inside. There was also chewing gum ones wrapped in a 'cigarette' paper. The good old days when PC was a copper and Health & Safety didn't exist. Just common sense.

Those candy sticks that Canadian bairns pretended were cigarettes? When I was a wee laddie, many, many years ago in Scotland they were actually marketed as 'sweet cigarettes'! They even had one end dyed red for the full effect. It seemed perfectly normal at the time... Edited just to say that I literally burst out laughing when you discovered the liquid in the camel bollock. Hi Alana, Thanks for another entertaining video. The blue raspberry rip roll reminds me of a candy I had when I was a kid called Fruit by the Foot. But if I remember correctly, I think it came in a plastic tape dispenser so it wouldn’t accidentally unroll into a big mess. I also ate Fruit Roll Ups as well. They unrolled into a sheet with perforated shapes like stars on it, that you would pull out from the sheet and eat, then you would be left with a stencil that you could use to draw shapes with, or just eat it. I always just ate it and I didn’t know anyone who actually used it as a stencil even though it was advertised on tv for that use.

You should try the Malt beer/Malt drinks that are available. The sweet black drink that despite the name is alcohol free, that you usually can only get in corner shops or minimarts. Quite nice sliced with butter, and alarmingly cheap for the calorie content.

I do remember that early taste test episode! You and A&N have come along way in relatively short period of time...🇬🇧🇨🇦

When I moved from Scotland to England in the 80s, Barr's drinks were just not a thing down here. It took years before I could get Irn Bru.

The ends used to be red for the popey's sticks...then they took that away. Ahh the goodies from the dépanneur. 🍬

The candy sticks I too remember pretending they were cigarettes. Some brands were even called candy cigarettes when I was a kid.

Shandy... I love that refreshing summer drink. But, I have never ordered one in a bar. Only ever had them at home.

Hey Alanna, I drank a lot of shandyade as a kid a few decades ago. I think it was the fact it made me feel grown up and felt like drinking beer! lol Hopefully you got to taste a wham bar? They were big in my secondary school in the 80's! Yes old fart I am!! 😁 The candy sticks I ate as a kid were rolled up chocolate.

Of all your video`s this made me laugh the hardest. I love those Nik naks but those Camel balls.... I`ve never seen them and I`m shocked they exist, I`m curious to try them now. When I was in my teens I would buy a can of Shandy Bass, this used real Bass beer and I loved it.

When I was a kid those candy sticks were actually called candy cigarettes and came in little replica cigarette boxes. Get em started early!

I remember that too. Really strange marketing that wouldn't happen these days but they were nice. I tried some a few years back and they tasted terrible.

@@Elwaves2925 do you remember that they were even wrapped in paper like a cigarette?!

@@FightingCoward Yep. King's was the brand name on the packet. There was another with a horseshoe on but I can't remember the name on them.

2:45 We used to have a genuine cigarette lookalike that even had a pink colour on the end to simulate being lit ! Busybodies put paid to those. I also seem to recall a chocolate cigarette that had paper wrapped around it like a 'roll up'. God the Seventies were fun.

Just I’d like to say we had those sweets in the late 50s when I was a young lad so there’s nothing new I thought they had gone out of business by now but obviously not

I remember the chocolate ciggies in the 90s. 5 year old me felt like such a badass in my tiny dungarees, sunglasses, nibbling on a choccy cig 😎
