We have NEVER had a Chip Butty before! Can Americans who've never had one, make a British authentic Chip Butty? We've tried quite a few british snacks but never the famous CHIP BUTTY! Today we are going to try not one, but 4 DIFFERENT KINDS! And we're going to make them from scratch (except the bread) ourselves! Join us as we stop at our local grocery store here to grab a couple things and then home to prepare & fry our chips and assemble our Chip Butty's! We're so excited! They ALL have salt & Vinegar and 1 will have HP Sauce, another with Ketchup, another with only Salt & Vinegar and lastly Natasha's Mayonnaise version. Let us know if we made these as authentic as possible. We hope you enjoy this and if you do please let us know and possible more cooking & food tasting videos will happen. This was so much FUN! Ladies This was a Masterclass! Please show this to all Americans react to British things! Most of us butter bread for our sandwiches but the whole point in a chip butty is to slather it on. The heat of the chips melts the butter and its just too yummy for coherent thought.😂

I went o Tampa, Florida in 1982 and at a deli asked for a turkey butty. The deli owner had no idea what a 'butty' was but after a brief chat about the English language served me what I wanted. The best thing was that the next time I went to the same deli they were advertising 'English butties.' I like to think I brought our two nations closer.

An excellent 1st attempt! A couple of points for you to try next time: Blanch the chips in oil at 130 deg Celsius (approx 260 deg Fahrenheit) to blanch them, just cooked through but no colour. Let them cool completely. Then fry at 180 deg Celsius (approx 360 deg Fahrenheit). When golden brown, lift and leave to drain over the pan, chuck them in a bowl and toss salt over to mix. The salt will soak up the excess oil. If your butter is un-spreadable, put it in a microwave on de-frost to soften, for only a few seconds at a time!

@@jackwhitbread4583 I trained at college in catering and still love a chip butty. I can make whatever food I want and what you call lazy food has its place. I’ll certainly eat one. I’m far from afraid of spices. Thing is some people get so stuck up their arse thinking that they can cook when all they mention are things like stews and rice dishes. It’s a bit general saying that none of your fellow Brits know how to cook good food. Met us all have you? I’ve just returned from nine months in Spain. I learnt a lot. I could probably cook you under the table. My son is a chef in a restaurant too. I taught him as a young teenager not to be scared of spices, herbs, oils and experimenting. All my three girls are great bakers. I’m proud that my kids can cook and so can I, so that five Brits that you can count out of your sweeping statement. Those who have their head up their own arse only see sh*t. Take your head out and let others do their thing without trying to seem superior. It’s not a good look.
@johngravett4638
@johngravett4638 3 месяца назад
Having worked in a Fish & Chip shop as a teenager, I can say that it is better to get the oil nice and hot prior to adding the chips, as the hot oil actually helps ‘seal’ the chips. It does create more spitting from the oil however. Another thing to try next time, is to pre-cook the chips to the point where they’re barley cooked, then allow them to cool down completely before finishing them off in hot oil just before serving. This can help with getting more of a crispy coating on the chips, but it’s a personal preference, as some people actually prefer a slightly softer chip 🙂😋👍🏻

When there's only 3 major ingredients it's amazing that most reactors think they can change one of them and not compromise the finished sarnie.Those chips were A+ so you were off to a good start there, not using cake for the bread helped a lot too! @@Paul-23.- In my long experience , and following tv chefs! , always get your oil hot - for both frying, deep frying - heat reaching just below the smoke point.... when i first cooked for myself in my 20's the chips w/be ruined when i put raw chips into cold oil ! [even raw bacon / eggs / mushrooms into cold oil is bad in a f/pan - they turn out oil saturated] - as well as taking longer to heat up.... hot oil frying seals the outside of the chip for a crispy end product - and so less chance of chips being soaked full of oil ......

Great video, one point is that most reasonable sized UK supermarket chains all just sell alcohol on standard store shelves, Wines, Beers and most spirits. The rules are that you have to be over the legal age to purchase. Funnily enough cigarettes are normally sold at a special kiosk in the store which normally doubles as the stores’ customer service desk. So not sure why you were reticent about entering into the Kroger spirits section. 🤷‍♂️

For a Brit who has grown up on Chip butties for over 50yrs this is one of the first American channels that have done things authentic. You have tried different condements to see which one is for you which is good, as people have different tastes to enhance the chip butty. Pro tip: Spread your brown sauce, ketchup etc. on one piece of bread insted of the chips, it gives an even spread throughout. Good job!

Oh dear! Firstly, to keep the potatoes from browning you should also put a drip or two of milk to your water and stir. Once all spuds are prepped rinse them and boil them until just tender. Drain then shake to get the outside of each chip roughed up. Let the chips dry a little. ONLY once these steps have been taken should the chip be fried in either hot lard or sunflower oil. This two stage prep can only be beaten by thrice cooked chips - they need to be refrigerated for 24 hrs after boiling but before frying.

Spot on to be honest. You're both always worried about doing these things the 'right' way but consistently you knock it out of the park, especially when compared to other American react channels who cook beans in a frying pan or add crisps to fish fingers because they just assumed that's what fish & chips are. Incase you didnt know, the most popular potato varieties in the UK are Maris Piper and King Edwards. Those are the 2 best all rounders I'd say which are great for chips or mash. For just small whole potatoes that you just scrape and have with butter, Jersey Royals or Cheshires I'd say are best. We refer to those as "new potatoes"

You must also slather the bread with lots of butter so it melts into the soft bread. You've done a grand job and should be proud of yourselves! They look delish! Pickled onion vinegar is also a favourite to use.

Not necessarily the normal British way, but if you want chips done really right, look up Heston Blumenthal's "Triple Cooked Chips". Par boil to soften and make a fluffy edge, a lower temp fry to cook and a quick hot temp fry to get a crispy golden exterior. The way you cut those chips would be perfect for that method.
