Canadian expat here in Australia, who migrated to Australia in the mid 60s. When I got here there was no ice hockey, (understandable as most of the country is flat , warm and dry). I was introduced to Australian Rules, which is fast, played on a very large playing field, and is very physical. I'm both a fan and a member of the Port Adelaide Football Club, which is one of the teams in the AFL. The teams are community based, and draw large memberships from these communities. Australians are very passionate about their football.

That heavy slam tackle over the boundary line at 6:45 is considered bad for a few reasons. It is a more recent clip and recently a lot of new rules have come in regarding tackles to protect players from concussion. The tackle over the line is already considered out of play, so tackling that hard is seen in poor form. Tackles where a player is slung (thrown with a whipping motion) is seen as excessive and dangerous. Finally, the tackler now has a responsibility to try to protect the head of the head of the person they are tackling, so driving the guy head first into the ground was a big violation.

Dude I love watching reaction videos of guys who have never seen our game. You should watch an actual game between say My team Essendon Vs Collingwood who just played each other on Friday, around 90k fans for a regular season game. Probably the biggest rivalry in our sport that's been around since the 1800's. Crazy I know. Footy is waaaaay older than most of the big sports on the planet.

There are no cards or ejections, the umpire( ref) can't send you off only the coach can drag you (tell you to come off the ground) and give you an earful and say how much you fd up, but you can still return to the field. But it's not good when the coach chew's your ear off. Lol

Two things to remember; the hits today that are considered against the rules never used to be ... modern afl is getting softer every year but the main thing other codes don't get is there are no ejections, send off, sin bin, red card etc. No matter how you break the rules .... enforcers in afl can do anything until the siren goes .... whether or not they ever play again is another matter 😂

@tileux The only time the Grand final was played away from the MCG when it has always been played was at Optus Oval (as against Subiaco) was because of Covid and it was between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs. The other grand final played away from the MCG the year before that was at the Gabba between Richmond and Geelong.

Awesome video! Btw in some states in Aus, Football is soccer. Some states, football is rugby/rugby union and where I'm from (Melbourne, Victoria) football is AFL and we call other sports as such, soccer is soccer and rugby as rugby. Check out the best of the decade 2010-19. Goals and marks (two separate videos)

The rules about these hits has changed a lot of the years. Most of these would have been play on (no penalty) in the 1970s and 80s but not so now. Any high contact (above the shoulder, as you mentioned) is illegal (except an accidental clash of heads of both players) and results in a free kick at a minimum. What happens after that depends on the grading of the event, i.e how deliberate was it and how severe was the impact. Anything other than accidental contact (i.e. both players were going for the ball and one of them got accidentally hit in the head) will result in a report (either by one of the on field umpires or by the match review panel who review the videos of all the games). The player will then be offered a penalty which he can accept or contest at the tribunal. Most of these hits would have resulted in several weeks' suspension. The left cross by the guy in red and white resulted in a 7-week suspension from memory. The offending player is Barry Hall, who you will not be surprised to learn became a boxer after retiring from football. There is no "sin bin" or send off rule in the AFL. The ruling on the slam tackle has changed recently. It used to be considered just a good tackle but now the tackling player has a duty of care to the player he is tackling. This is especially relevant if the tackled player has his arms pinned and therefore cannot protect himself and his head hits the turf. The players clearly practice this and have become pretty skilled at avoiding this sort of tackle which is pretty impressive, given the short period of time they have to decide how to tackle. Do we call association football soccer? Depends. If you are a soccer aficionado, you will probably call it football. But if you mainly follow Aussie rules or a version of rugby, you will probably call that game football (or footy) and association football soccer.

Big hits are legal, but anything that hits the head or risks hitting the head is 100% illegal - they are particularly hard on that in recent years (sometimes ridiculously and unfairly so, where accidental hits to the head are getting players in trouble for being too reckless). 6:49 Here the tackle wasn't too bad, but because it resulted in the player's head hitting the ground it was an issue. They kept calling it a 'sling tackle' because the tackled player's arms were held when he was being flung to the ground, so he couldn't really protect his fall. If he wasn't so wrapped up and fell without hitting his head, it would have been fine. The real courage of these players is that they are in 360 degrees traffic. Big hits or even accidental collisions are an occupational hazard and can lead to broken bones etc. 7:44 This hit, for example, broke the player's jaw (it's mentioned in a Vice vid about the rivalry between Carlton and Collingwood which you might like to react to) This compilation is tame, tho, compared to even in the 90s.

Everything can be FOOTBALL to a fan Most Aussies call the round ball game soccer...except soccer fans, they call it football. AFL is called football, aussie rules, or AFL (aerial pingpong by Rugby fans) Rugby Union is mostly called union, or rugby. But Union fans probably call it football. (Bum sniffing by AFL fans) Rugby League, NRL, can also be called football by league fans. BLOODY CONFUSING. If you said to any fan "are you watching friday night football" they would all say yes, even though they are watching 4 different games 🤯🤯

We don’t have any yellow or red cards the players can not be sent off during the game but afterwards if they get reported during the game by the umpires they have to go the tribunal committee which is basically court for footy and that’s is were they get suspended or fined depending on how bad it is

I have trouble watching these one’s and yes, there were penalties, big fines and weeks out of the game. They have made it safer than then but still not safe. They are studying the later problems after concussions and finding ways to cut them out without messing up the game. I did laugh out loud when the Referee in yellow was taken out and that would have been an accident. He should have been aware around his space, not in the way and some Ref’s need this because they don’t see enough. That is why there are more around the outside of the field. Each game has 3 anonymous people watching who score 3 player with 3, 2 or 1 point each. You only get those points for good, clean play and at the end of the year the winner wins the Brownlow Medal. My husbands team is currently at the top and one of his team was the favourite so far to win this year. Until last week. I don’t know who or what he did but after the Tribunal had finished with him he will not be playing in the Grand Final if they make it. It must have been bad, my Doctor will not let me watch it. Sports I like on the stimulants list along with coffee and a lot of good things. I can live without coffee.😂

Footy in Australia has always been mostly Australian Rules Football, but in NSW, QLD and Canberra it is League, often called Rugby League. NSW were against Aussie Rules because the game was started in Melbourne and not Sydney. Qld then followed NSW into League with both states ignoring Australia's original national sport. True Aussies have little time for girl sports like soccer, and we take offence to anyone calling Soccer as football. If you dont have the courage to play a real football, then go play tennis or ping pong.......and if they are too brutal for you then go do the ironing as a sport.

G'day mate They've clean it up alot now You can hardly bump now as if get it wrong weeks of suspension The guy in white being slammed into the turf was illegal because players arms are pinned and can't protect himself So player tackling responsibility to protect the player their tackling and got suspension for several weeks Which is same ammount of games as they only play once a week plus fines and the more suspension's you get the bigger the penalties Like the guys throwing punches guy in red got 7 weeks as he's repeat offenders multiple times other guy got less that thrown punch as better record It cost them in fines and lost of income as on top of their contracts they receive match game payments and it varies by you skill levels You need to look at older clips way worse and payed bugger all used to knock players deliberately out if they where to good which could change the game and stand toe to toe full on punch on a bit like your ice hockey But can't do that now they rub you out of the game the guy in red struggle to play half a season as was mark man by officials any thing that looked reportable even accidental where they'd leave it with other plater would wipe him out for weeks at a time That one you seen the reason you hear commentator say he let himself down was because he'd behaved for a long time even with every player in his face trying to get him suspended He retired not long after that to take up a boxing gig Also we don't have a send off in Aussie rules it's up to your coach if he decides weather you able to play or to agro Also has been player rubbed out of the game for hitting the umpire as they used to in old days when trying to stop the players fighting So rule came in you touch umpire's your career over suspended for life and why you see umpire's not scare and so close yelling at players What they normally do now is get the ball and bounce it straight away and player disperse quickly to prevent other team scoring easy goal As for soccer we call it either soccer or football usually define it if you call it football same with rugby call either but then add union or league Because there's two types of rugby and one a break away with some rule changes there's information on you tube about it But Aussie rules is just called football and top league is AFL as we have state footy where they draft the players from and out of form AFL player go back to find form or if returning from injuries the play in state football hoping to go back into AFL again when in form Also when older guys no longer able to play AFL they resign and some play state footy to help teach up and coming player what to exspect Alot go into coaching runners other club stuff and into media Most of the commentators are x AFL retired players and where the best in their field why playing Then some go to media sports panels radio or TV hope this helps Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍

You are on the money there . Most of these hits are illegal and would result in 4 to 6 week suspensions when they were done on purpose. The AFL is really onto concussion and now do everything they can to protect the head , but accidents do happen . The second player that got punched deserved it . He was a pest and like a chiwawa taking on a pitbull he f ed around and found out. Best marks , or best goals better showcases the spectacular side of the game . Highlight reals of Eddie Betts , Garry Ablett Snr and Jnr , Buddy Franklin , Dustan Martin , Cyril Rioli , will blow you away with their skill.

These definitely arent the biggest hits of all time. Some of them sure but there are much better videos out there. As for the one you thought was a legal tackle. It was once yes but due to the modern day protection against concussion theyve outlawed slamming peoples head in to the turf when they have arms pinned and can't protect themselves.
