I literally only searched for a clip of him talking AKA this video because as I was watching "KIM'S convenience" I thought: " he has to be fluent, this CANNOT be his real accent!" and I was correct. 😁😁😁
@jkk jkk It's because of the accent he uses in the show. I'm Asian and I was a bit weirded out too even though I knew the Korean accent was fake cuz I'd never heard him speak outside the show.
Not really. His accent is so phony and bad in the show. Idk why they gave him generic asian fake accent. Ruined his character. Cartoonishly level bad. 1/10 acting
Wait nobody said it was a (northeast) asian thing. I could be dull to this cause I’m Korean but it’s a line that Mr kim says a lot. I’m curious is this is a asian expression or something
I know he’s an actor, but for a split second, when the cam panned to him lookin all shook in the crowd, I thought “aww poor Mr Kim looks so confused how did he get into this mess what did Janet and Jung do now” lmao
i just came to hear him without the accent but instead i got a heartwarming speech about representation?? gosh i dont regret it one bit. paul sun-hyung lee is an inspiration 😤👏
I'm black and I'm happy for him as well... he's right representation matters. This show has a diverse cast, love this show. I have never laughed so much 😂
Usually, the actor looks drastically different from the character because they groom themselves differently in real life, but Paul looks exactly like Sang-il, it’s almost like our Appa’s giving the speech lmao
No "Sneak Attack" for the award - well deserved. My wife and I only discovered and started binge-watching Kim's Convenience and cannot contain ourselves with laughter. So well written and acted. It is a total gem and respite from the news of the day. I can't remember when I've laughed so hard that I've nearly fallen off the couch!
I love this dude. He's awesome and as a born-and-raised Toronto native, it's is a dream of mine to meet this man one day AND stick around to watch filming of Kim's Convenience and hopefully meet the rest of the cast!! Congrats bud!
Ummm.. Kim's Convenience is filmed at a closed CBC Soundstage in Toronto.. Exterior shots are filmed at Mimi's Convenience in Chinatown .. So you won't be able to see anything, sorry..
Who’s here after he was announced t be Iroh in the live action Avatar series? And who also saw the comment from a year ago saying this guy should be Iroh?
Ironically, Iroh was supposed to be Ozai's brother. But, Daniel Dae Kim ( Who plays Ozai ) is 4 years older than him . However, Paul ( Who plays Iroh ) looks like he is around 60-61 years old yet he's surprisingly only 49 . Meanwhile, Daniel Dae Kim is 53 yet he looks no older than 38-39 years old.
WHAT IN THE WORLD. I WOULD HAVE NEVER GUESSED THAT HE WOULD SOUND LIKE THAT. I had figured that he didn’t actually talk like how he does in the show but oml this is so crazy! :0 P.s, Kim’s Convenience has to be one of the best and wholesome shows I’ve ever come across! :)
I'm not Korean so I can't speak to that experience, but I do teach ESL. It's not so much that the accent is unrealistic as the grammar and phrasing is unrealistic. The script is clearly designed so that native English speakers can understand what the kids are trying to communicate when, realistically, we either shouldn't be able to understand everything because they haven't learned that much English and the pronunciation would actually be worse or they should be speaking in more natural sentences because they have lived in Canada for so long. They would still speak with an accent, of course, but they probably wouldn't confuse verb tenses as much or forget to use pronouns. or, most realistically, they would absolutely just speak in Korean to each other most of the time.
when you give people a voice other people start to listening and when people start to listening things start to change. 사람들에게 말할 기회를 주면 다른 사람들이 듣기 시작하고 사람들이 듣기 시작하면 변화가 일어나기 시작한다. so impressive. we are proud of you
I only discovered this show on Netflix this past spring but have already watched all three available seasons at least half a dozen times each. Lots of great, fun character work and the stories and relationships, though they involve an immigrant family, can easily apply to and be found in every nationality and walk of life. I think that's the show's real triumph, that it crosses cultural boundaries by presenting its characters first and foremost as three dimensional human beings -- who just happen to be Asian immigrants. Love the show, can't wait for season 4.
An incredibly fine actor but seems to be an even better man! Representation does matter. Not only was it cool to see an Asian family run a grocery store (like the Kang family where I grew up) but I also really like the representation of what Canada is supposed to be; a place for everybody!
A friend of mine told me about this series since he knows how much I love Korean programming. I didn't think I'd like it considering it wasn't from Korea, but in....Canada? I have to say this show really opened my eyes to how Canadian life is with all the representation. I didn't even know there were Hispanic people in Canada, so that was nice to see. Here in the States, Hispanics are usually subjected to negative roles.
So well deserved!!! He’s my absolute favorite character on the show! I’m on Season 3 and I can’t get enough! I got my bf on the train who just started binge watching it. 😂
i came here to hear what he sounds like when is not being Mr Kim. im so surprised by his voice, what an amazing actor and his speech was lovely. hopefully more representation is shown in the media
Everyone is talking about how surprised they are as listening to his speech but the very first sound came out of his mouth on the stage 'h,he-g' laughter mixed with a sigh is very Korean.
Representing a group or cultural only works if you have a great show to back it up that everybody can find something to relate to and people are able to see themselves in the characters. That's why the show works because people similar we all are instead of our differnece. Once a show does that it makes people want to learn about others and not feel like it's being forced.
