As a canadian I didnt learn about residential schools until I learned that my great grandmother was taken as a child and placed in one. That's not ok. My 7 year old came home after learning about them with only the knowledge that you can be taken away from your parents and she was terrified I had to explain to her what it actually was and that her great great grandmother was in one. I grew up raised by my white mother I have limited knowledge of my heritage and the more I learn the angry I get about the lies taught in the education system..

I believe that we need a change in narratives not just BLM but that we all matter. So many stories of atrocities that were never addressed in regards in Native and Indian history. I am of Latin and Native American heritage and I don’t just learn about my heritage but as others as well. So many people have suffered from racism and bias. If want society to change we need to accept each other’s uniqueness and cultures. This cancer needs to be eradicated in every way. Yeah! All the countries in the American continent are guilty of the ongoing genocide to the people of the First Nation!💔 The sad reality is that Canada is the one doing the most efforts for reconciliation while we all know they should be doing WAYYY more. In the States, I looked up some stats and....oh my god!!! The representation of the Natives in the medias are less than 1% for all the spheres! In school, american kids don't learn anything about the First Nations after the 1900 which causes people to think that they have gone instinct! In the States and in South American countries, women and kids of the First Nation are more likely to get kidnapped and sold for HUMAN TRAFFICKING because the laws do not protect them enough!! Now all I hope is that Canada will lead the way for all American countries to change their ways. I would also like to point out that the President of USA, Bernie Sanders had recognized the Armenian genocide earlier this year...so there might be hopes!

Hi Rae, Since you are still very young and impressionable, I would like to say a few things to you: 1) This is a propaganda play. Notice how only one side is shown and only bad things occurred. 2) The 'atrocities' were not just afflicted upon natives. Look at the history of the Catholic church and boarding schools. Look at the history of orphanages and son on. Understand the history of the wars in the 20th century and its impact on life in Canada. Understand how much harder lifer was compared to today. 3) The unmarked mass graves are likely from real public health emergencies. Look at how deadly spanish flu and tuberculosis were. Ask yourself why no one claimed the children that passed on at these schools. 4) Not too long ago teachers were allowed to use corporal punishment. All children got at least this level of abuse. 5) Reconciliation is a misnomer. There is no one in power or paying taxes that wants to abuse natives. At 8:45 the whole discussion shows that this is a money grab and the people pushing the narrative are hoping for moral shame among the politicians and taxpayers to get free money. They want restitution and feel empowered from the recent BLM contrivance in the states. (I'm hesitant to leave BLM in here as I am sure you are properly set straight on that topic by more propaganda.) What's missing from conversation: 1) Why residential schools were created and the discussion on how good intentions can lead to negative results.. and who is actually responsible for this (catholic church). I am finding out that the government didn't administer some of these schools until after much of the 'atrocities' were committed. That is why the speaker calls them 'government sanctioned', it is vague enough for you to believe that 'atrocities' were committed at the behest of the government. 2) Why unmarked graves exist. If your child went missing what would you do to find them? Why didn't that happen? 3) Why they want you to believe that a boarding school closed in 1996 was still committing abuse as recently as 1996. Notice the trick here that they tell you the close date but not if anything bad even happened. 4) Why the news media (opinion and propaganda) want to frame everything through the lens of racism. 5) Why they are ignoring the 'atrocities' committed against non-natives in the same era. 6) Why they want you to be ashamed of your country. The story of residential schools has not been thrown under the rug. This isn't something new that was just found out in the last few months, once you get older you may see a news-cycle trend. Anyway, if you read and digested this post good on you and I hope that you think critically about this topic. I am very highly skeptical of the way the information is being offered right now and think the media is missing out on a real opportunity to share what really happened.

If you want a 'propaganda play' look no further than Milk Tobo's comment. The Canadian residential schools meet the definition of genocide as per the UN General Assembly Genocide Convention signed in 1948. Milk Tobo is nothing more than an apologist and denier. The historical record and facts speak for themselves. Residential schools were originally introduced to deliberately "get rid of the Indian problem” as per John A MacDonald and Duncan Campbell Scott's own words. See also the report by Dr. Peter Henderson Bryce published in 1922, titled 'The Story of a National Crime' which was suppressed by the Canadian government. This is not a new issue and mortality rates in the schools were known one hundred years ago.

@lee02jepson
@lee02jepson 3 года назад
It was much deeper than just not liking their culture, it was about money, about trying to kill them, if not in body, mentally, it was about shutting them up about the country being grabbed from them. The government gave a lot of money to people/organizations to run the school (for want of a better word, b/c they were not schools) + many people were involved in getting that money. Wasn't just religious organizations who made money from this, it was companies that made money producing things like handcuffs for children of different ages, clothing they had to wear and so on. And the RCMP knew that these crimes were happening, when a child was murdered + the parents wanted an inquiry they were often told to drop it or they would end up in jail. I agree with her that one of the things that needs to happen is what happened in Germany + their atonement for WW1, WW2 and the death camps, through education of the population starting in primary school. This will never be done with the present governments we always vote in (PC + Liberals). Just recently a Progressive Conservative MP in Alberta stated that the Native people need to get over it and just work hard. So it definitely won't happen with a PC government. We can't let someone as cold, uncaring + mean spirited as that come into a place of power. And I hate that he lives off tax payers money. We need to really consider who we vote in next time around if we want this to be addressed properly.

THERE ISN’T ENOUGH BEING DONE! This video is from years ago, yet most of the rest of the world doesn’t know much about this. I personally have never heard about this until today. This is a problem, if you think about it if this happened in China or India the government would be destroyed and word of it would have spread far and wide, yet Canada is allowed to get away with it (so far). Where are the people? Only a few people from countries without these schools know of this, compare this to the vast majority of people who haven’t heard of (or don’t know much about) this, only a small proportion can do anything about it. Also, where are the people who were trying to raise awareness of China’s concentration camps? Just because Canada is a developed and western country doesn’t mean we can turn a blind eye to this. Don’t even try to say ‘at least the didn’t try to hide it’ because yes they did, through the ignorance of their people, through not telling the people about this despite it being YEARS since they found out about it. The best way to fix this is by educating.

The West should come together and slap sanctions on Canada 🇨🇦, instead of criticism of other human rights in other societies let’s make a example of Canada. Let us show the rest of the world that the West not only just use human right as talking point but lead by example. Let us ban Canadian goods, let us close borders!

Ginger is not only a brilliant story teller and speaker like many other Nisga’a people, the ideas and models espoused here have to be spread more widely and acted upon. We need both greater awareness and capacity building for indigenous peoples if we're to truly have a nation of equals and all prospering.

Kinda insane I’m 21 and from the US and had never heard of these schools until I saw the story about the 214 body’s and decided to dig deeper. 150,000 effected throughout the 1900s and it’s only now getting talked about is sad.

Residential "schools" also took place in the USA and Australia. Across the board a specific pattern. i don't know the numbers for Au but USA had a greater number of these prisons than Canada even . There's a ted talk given by a survivor from Australia

I wanted to ask this to be as respectful as possible. but is it offensive to call native Americans “Indians”? Because my family was at a pow wow (idk how to spell it) and my mother asked one of the natives there if it was and he said yes but I keep seeing conflicting info. Thanks for the help.

My grandfather was taken from his family and "raised" in a residential school. He was 17 when he met my grandma (15). They got married in their 20s, then spent their life together 'til he died when he was 82. She said, even though he was in a residential school, he still thought in Mohawk. He spoke in Mohawk - and took so long to speak in English because he had to translate English words to Mohawk back to English. When I was a kid, he'd call me by my Mohawk name (and not my legal English name). One of the strongest men in my life. He didn't let WHO HE WAS be taken from him. Good stuff. Proud to be an Aboriginal - only because Canada and America tried to erase us and we're STILL here, speaking OUR language. You tried to take that away from my grandfather yet HE STILL SPOKE IT. And his GRANDKIDS still speak it. His great grandkids, who will never meet him, still speak it. You have GOT to respect that diligence, that perseverance, that spirit, that willingness to keep our culture alive. But nah, we're just all a bunch of drunks and druggies who throw our lives away.
