More about Gianmarco:
Gianmarco Soresi is a stand-up comedian, actor, and a little too much for some people. He’s told jokes on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Comedy Central, Netflix’s Bonding, Don’t Tell, The Real Housewives of New York for some reason, and he was a JFL New Face in 2022. He’s acted in Billy Crystal’s Here Today, Hustlers, The Last OG, and in his theater days shared the stage with some people who’ve gone on to become huge real estate agents. You can see him post the kind of crowdwork clips that are arguably destroying the artform of stand-up comedy everywhere @gianmarcosoresi and he obviously has a podcast called The Downside with Gianmarco Soresi.🎤

My Thanksgiving involved my mom first going to visit my sister and then me. Usually it's that the parents are divorced and the kids go to different houses, but now it's that the kids are divorced and the parent goes to different houses. The divorce is due to domestic abuse, trespassing, and threats of myrder and arson. I am also an aspiring comedian, in case you couldn't tell from the lack of mention of a father 😊

Holy shit as a Canadian he has NO IDEA how accurate his assessment of Canadian Thanksgiving is. "Pretty much" was the ONLY reasonable response
@elainea7734
@elainea7734 9 месяцев назад
Canadian Thanksgiving is agreed upon by most historians to predate American Thanksgiving, its based on two different things originally celebrated in the maratimes, the first being the harvest festival that was shared between the Mi'kmaq and the Acadians (which was a genuine annual occurrence, not a made up dinner), the second being a celebratory feast held in Newfoundland by a licensed pirate who pillaged French ships before making several attempts to find the Northwest Passage. Upon having the good sense to turn around and flee before freezing to death, he and his crew celebrated the fact that they got out alive with a feast. Also it originally did not center around turkey, you'd eat rabbit, deer, fish, goose, apples, pumpkins, lobster, generally whatever the hell you could gather together. It wasn't until the influx of American loyalists to Eastern Canada that turkey became less of an option and more of a requirement. Canada had their own very different Thanksgiving, (which again, very likely came first) now no one remembers why or what it was, and we sit around eating turkey, watching American football and talking about American politics. It's embarrassing.

@@elainea7734 The English had Harvest Festival back in the Middle Ages and probably before that. The English who went to Canada just took it with them. The tradition of celebrating harvest goes right back to the Old Testament.
@elainea7734
@elainea7734 9 месяцев назад
@@annainspain5176 oh I'm not up in here saying the obvious and basic idea of a friggin *harvest festival* comes from Canada lol, It just drives me off my nut when people are like "CanaDA IS jusT TRyinG to BE AMEricA". Our "thanksgiving" doesn't come from America. Immigrants to North America brought their harvest festivals over from Europe, and Indigenous Canadians had *their* own harvest festivals. The Canadian version of that harvest festival is based specifically on the one shared between the Acadians and the Mi'kmaq, and it involves (or used to involve) its own traditions. People in America act like they invented the concept of every holiday, and people in Canada are so out of touch with their own culture that *they* act like we're just cheeky chums with no discernable history who stole those holidays *from America*.
@Zack_Taylor
@Zack_Taylor 9 месяцев назад
@@elainea7734 I can't tell if you're disagreeing with me or just adding random (interesting but not related to my comment) info. Modern Canadian national identity in general (let alone thanksgiving) seems to be "genocide but then you say sorry after". Because of that I think it's hilarious that he landed on that description by adding thanksgiving and Canadian stereotypes together and not realizing how relevant to Canadian comedy his joke was. It had layers that I'm pretty sure he wasn't aware of.
@elainea7734
@elainea7734 9 месяцев назад
@Zack_Taylor I mean I wasn't disagreeing, but I think it was relevant, you said "his assessment of Canadian Thanksgiving" which is also the subject of the video. I'm saying that while you find his comment funny due to that assessment applying to Canada in general right now, I'm saying I find it *even more* funny that another aspect of Canada as a whole is that we've become a cultural wasteland and this audience member, along with many of the people in this comment section, seem to have no sweet clue what the history is behind their own holiday. I guess what I mean is, you say that his comment sums up Canadian identity, and I would argue we barely *have* an identity any more, which I think this video, and the multitude of confused Canadians commenting underneath it, is proof of lol

There are primary sources and original letters that document several days of feasting between the original pilgrims and Native Americans. But American Thanksgiving today is more closely tied to when Abraham Lincoln took the advice of a famous housewife to make it a national holiday. He was also trying to use it during times of war and division to help the whole country be united in remembering what good things we shared with each other.
@IndigoButterfly
@IndigoButterfly 9 месяцев назад
Canadian Thanksgiving is just a celebration that grew out of a harvest festival.(that being said her pretty much could just be referencing how terrible we treated the indigenous groups in general) The American story is made up, it appeared rather suddenly in a school book at one point. Historically there are letters talking about "feasts of thanksgiving" but that's because it used to be a fairly common practice in Christian tradition to have them for almost any reason you could think of.
@Brooke_Corbyn
@Brooke_Corbyn 9 месяцев назад
A common story I did hear growing up in Canada, from even my concerningly right wing family members, was that the indigenious people welcomed the colonialists but they betrayed this trust and attacked the indigenious people. In vague terms this was sometimes tied to an American feast, which I gather now is their thanksgiving. The part that always varied was the Canadian propoganda in which Canada (better than the USA, of course) had "learned" from these mistakes and created residential schools, when in fact residential schools were merely another avenue of genocide. After that was recognized as wrong the propoganda became about "not all residential schools were bad" and "dont worry weve changed they're closed now (cough dont look at the one that closed in '97) and we said sorry". Which version of that story you'd get from school books or even people was a coin toss, but I dont recall it ever being attached to our thanksgiving. Im interested in whether others had this experience? Canadian history as I know it has long had an air of superiority about how nice their genocide was, and I find that impacts all of our culture. For every historical event there is propoganda about Canadians being "better" and "more humane", while in conflict also gaining a reputation for fighting dirty. There's always a scapegoat for our country's actions, and in that way I find we are just like the USA.

This year. The day after thanksgiving. After all the family left, my parents told us they’re getting a divorced because my dad cheated on my mom. Then a few days my bf dumped me. Then I walked out of my job because the new gm put their hands on me. Then she fired me the next day for leaving lmao. All my friends are distant or left me. This happened last of November beginning of December. I haven’t been out the house I’m over a week. :p I gotta go back to school in Jan soooo I’m looking forward to that.
