The Canadian 7th Brigade with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, the Regina Rifles, the Canadian Scottish Regiment and a contingent from the Royal Montreal Regiment attempt to force a crossing of the Leopold Canal as part of Operation Switchback, Battle of the Scheldt. For 6 days the battle raged on a 2 km front and barely 200 meters deep as Germans and Canadians fought hand to hand and within grenade throwing range. Brutal is the only way to describe the battle. The 3 regiments of the Canadian 7th Brigade suffers 530 wounded or killed and another 200 battle fatigue casualties.

Wow- I had never seen this video before. and I had been researching about my uncle Arnold, He was with the 17th Duke of York Royal Canadian Hussars, a reconnaissance regiment that one of their platoons was sent in to help the Canadian Scottish. He was badly wounded after crossing while battling it out with the Scottish during their part of the battle.. This soundtrack and the video is vividly haunting- what those guys went through. Unfortunately he died young after returning to Canada- and my father tells me the war took a toll on him- having landed day and involved with Cean, Carpiquet, and Falaise. Thaks so much video- curious if other 17th Hussars friends see this too

i live in a town not far from here, named Aardenburg. This memorial, where queen Wilhelmina first came back to Holland, is in the small town of Eede, just at the border with Belgium. Operation swichback was a very hard fight, and many soldiers and civilians lost their lives. We are still very gratefull for all those who gave their lives for our freedom..

My great uncle (Simon Reid) from Onanole Manitoba fought with the rifles in these battles. Made it home and lived a long life. Brave man, didn’t like to talk about the war though. Too traumatizing. RIP uncle Simon

Truly amazing - my great Uncle (Bertram Henderson) also with the Regina Rifles fought here and was lucky enough to have made it across the Leopold only to suffer his fate during battle just three weeks later in the Bresken Pocket in the Battle of the Scheldt. Uncle Bert is buried in nearby Adegem. I really hope to go there one day. God bless all those men who fought and died and thank-you Dave for the video.

My Uncle died at a casualty clearing station on Oct 10 1944 he never got to meet his first and only child. His name was James Andrew Bruce Grawbarger of the Algonquin Regiment. I am going to try to find Eeklo here cause that is where they claim he was wounded, no one seems to know where the Casualty clearing station was.

Thank you for this video. I can now visualize where my Uncle fought and fell. He was Canadian Scottish and was seriously wounded on Oct.16/44 crossing the Canal. He was the only one to survive when a mortar hit the dinghy that he and his mates were crossing in.

Johnaxl666 Oct 06 1944 My great uncle as well. Have you watched "storming Juno" on the history channel? Was watching it Nov11,2014, was very interested in this SGT they called Chief. At the end I realized it was Harvey . Never thought I would be watching my (well our) family history on the history channel.

have you been to the Canada Poland Museum in Adegem. Its Awesome, one of my favorite museums in Europe. Mr. van Landschoot, the owner has many items from that area. My Grandfather and great Uncle served in the Canadian Artillery and supported the Operation. Check out my video on Canada Poland Museum. If you ever get the chance to go there, tell Mr. van Landschoot your story, he would love to meet you.

My Grandpa Served In The Regina Rifles Regiment (Rifleman) From Juno Beach On D-Day To VE Day... The Canadian Troops Don't Recieve The Recognition That They Deserve For The Countless Sacrifices Made. From The Dark Days of The Dieppe Raid When The British Sacrificed Hundreds of Canadians and Hundreds Captured... Made To Storm The Beach at Dieppe, That Operation Taught The Allies Lessons That Made D Day Landings Victorious... God Bless Those Allied Forces Who Lived and Died.
