Canadians Clearing the Scheldt Estuary & Walcheren Causeway, October 1944 

Think your account is a bit inaccurate, you’ve completely missed the British Army Regiments that also fought their way across this region, 4th & 5th KOSB. The 4th and 5th battalions found themselves in the Low Countries in the autumn of 1944, taking part on the strongly contested assault landings on Walcheren Island, at the mouth of the Scheldt. They then fought through into Germany taking a notable part in operation Blackcock and also taking part in the capture of Bremen. My father was in 4th KOSB

The old causeway actually ran where the high speed rail link is now, I believe the highway is just a bit offset. There is private land where the entry to the causeway is but I was lucky to have a Dutch guide a few years ago who took myself and Denny Russell of the Calgary Highlanders museum out to take a look. There were some concrete troop shelters and a Tobruk emplacement which are also visible on the 1944 dated Canadian Army maps of the area. Remnants of anti-tank obstacles on the old causeway itself are still there. Naturally enough, the Sloe Channel that used to separate the island from the mainland has been reclaimed by the industrious Dutch farmers. Thank you to Valour Canada for keeping the history alive, I hope to put out my own video on this topic soon, including the attack of 9th Company, SS-Deutschland Regiment along the same causeway in May 1940!
