In this episode we are entering a new region of the Trent-Severn Waterway and are heading through 6 locks in 20 miles...
It's a beautiful day filled with one of a kind lift locks, a bit of drama with shallow sections and markers switching, and ending with a fantastic view over the largest body of water on the Trent-Severn - Lake Simcoe.

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.

Are you guys planning any more trips with your boat and do you want to buy a bigger boat with two engines and give Linda a break lol😂 I’m from Michigan and loved your guys trip though the Great Lakes if I were to buy me a boat I would keep it in Grand Haven Michigan missing your show because I went back to work be cool

I'm glad you rescued the spider. My dad taught us to do the same thing since it's a beneficial insect. I probably would have put him on the wall and not the deck, though. 😀 Super impressed by your black bean burgers! I can't ever get mine to stay together like that.

You folks are following the same route My wife and I would take every summer for a few years back in the late 60's early 70's and in those days - imagine the difference in era - it was common for some of the lock keepers in the dog days of summer to hold you to ransom for a cold brew from the fridge. LOL. Those were different times when we weren't so all up-tight all the time. I remember well the Couchiching narrows being the most expensive fuel-up ever. Lake Simcoe has the dubious honour of being subject to sudden squalls coming out of nowhere in a heartbeat and with just compasses being the standard in those days we had more than one frightening experience while crossing that lake. The marine railroad at Severn Falls is another exciting event until you've done it once.

Hi again. The reason the locks are a smoother ride from Kirkfield liftlock on down, is because you are now going down so there isn't any turbulence inside the lock chamber. The water is going out not in. Keep the videos coming, loving it.

We live and boat on Lake Simcoe. We've cruised from Simcoe to Buckhorn several times in our 26 foot Doral Citation cruiser, and recently from Trenton to Lake Simcoe in our 32 foot ,Carver . It's a beautiful trip.

Here are my favorite boaters. I finally figured out why I enjoy your videos so much. The way you describe everything almost makes me feel like I'm back out there with you. Your personalities are awesome and are always up, even when having problems. You appreciate the little things and describe them. For anyone who had just started boating, your videos would be an awesome education and would recommend them to everyone. Every lock you have a description if there is a change. Simcoe can be a problem at times. Whips up quick. I can't wait for your videos when you get past Lake Couchiching. If you thought that part of the Trent was beautiful, the next you will think your in heaven. That's what I thought when I lived there.

First of all, I love the video's you make! I like to be on the water as much as possible but when i can't watching your video's is a great substitute :) I just realised this watching the video so it might be nice to share it with you. If you go up in a lock, the water needs to flow into the lock so it will cause a lot of currents and disturbance in the water inside the lock. When going down in a lock, whether it is manually or automatically operated, the water flows out of the lock. I do think this is the main reason you experience such smooth lock passages now :)

A really great video. The areas you passed through were gorgeous. If I understand the term correctly, that heavily forested area you went through at the beginning may qualify as being "arboreal" in nature. That big lift lock is amazing. I think it's cool that the locks are crewed by a lot of young people. Very different than when you get or got through the USACE locks on the US "Western Rivers." They are run by a bunch of "good old boy" types. These locks are industrial, hardworking locks. As usual, you guys really feature so much of the areas you pass through, much more so than do most of those who Loop and put out videos. It is my plan at some point in the next few years to do the Loop but even though it's definitely beautiful and worth doing, I plan to go the US route through Lake Ontario into Erie because I am from Ohio and spent time along the Ohio Lake Erie shore as a child, so must travel along the Ohio lake shore and stop in Cleveland to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, party some in "The Flats," and make stops at the Lake Erie islands like Put-In-Bay and at Toledo to see some family. My one goal and hard dateline on my trip, would be to stop in Traverse City, Michigan in August when they celebrate the birthday of my old military service, the US Coast Guard. They hold one of the largest of such celebrations in the country. As much as I am enjoying your run of the Trent Severn, I am looking forward to seeing where you stopped during the Great Lakes section of the Loop. I'm so glad I found your videos.

I think you might be thinking of the Coast Guard Festival in Grand Haven, MI (about 150 miles south and west of Traverse City). Grand Haven calls itself Coast Guard City, USA and the CG Festival in August is quite the party. 😊

Enjoy watching. Brings back memories of when we used to do these canals three years in a row. After the third time we had enough of doing the run from Montréal to the Georgian Bay and we kept the boat at the Southern end of the Bay and drove back and forth as we spent two months boating each summer. We would make a point of being South of Perry Sound by early August as the weather changed in the Northern Half of the Bay. The boat would be out of the water by mid August and winterized. The locks look great now compared to 42 years ago.

Great job getting through what we call the ditch/ canal,from Kirkfield through the hole in the wall, Elliott did an amazing job, that spot is sometimes sketchy and has had reports of people hitting there,also your decision not to cross Simcoe until morning was very smart it can stir up really fast And become a boaters nightmare,can’t wait for your next video, sounds like you’re heading to port of Orillia.. ❤

I'm thrilled by your opinion of the Canadian people and the Trent-Severn Waterway lock staff. The area you passed through in this video is my neighbourhood. If I had known your location at the time I would have offered a lift to the grocery store. You will notice in the video the section from the Bolsover lock to Lake Simcoe has recently been refurbished. Same with the "hole in the wall", the bridge in Canal Lake that was originally built in 1905. As for your videos, they are real and that is why they are so enjoyable to watch. I can't wait to hear your comments of the rest of the waterway and your journey thru the Thirty Thousand Islands of Georgian Bay. Best wishes in your future travels wherever they take you.

Hi guys, love your videos. Brings back memories; I did ot both ways in about 1983 with my two children. The locks are always smoother going down. The water draining out doesn't produce violent eddies the way the water rushing in does. I'm an AGLCA member but I don't think I'll be able to do the Loop due to health problems. Love your videos! I'd also love to see or hear about some of the day to day, and week to week kinds of maintenance that you do on the boat, along the lines of "today we changed the oil", "tomorrow we have to repack the shaft", "the rudder needs to be scraped clean soon". That kind of thing. To help get a sense of how much work needs to be done given how much you're moving along.

The bridge is known as "The Hole in the Wall", it was rebuilt a few years ago. It has been well known for years as an area with deadheads and it is recommended to slow down when approaching that area. Another great video, thank you. What video editing software do you use? Graham & Sacha

Can you compare the US locks with the CDN Locks. Looks like you had a good time on the Trent.

The Trent-Severn and Eerie Canal were very similar but the TS locks were easier because you used your own lines around cables, instead of using the lock-provided lines. The USACE locks on the rivers were much different due to the floating bollards and commercial traffic. Do many (or any) do the whole loop in a houseboat, or are they just concentrated in a few areas where they don't need to travel far?

They do the whole Trent. But you'll just see more in the areas where they rent them. The whole loop though the USA. I don't know. But I don't think I'd want to get caught in Lake Ontario in rough weather. On the Georgian Bay side there are the 30,000 islands and inside inside protected channels. So lots of houseboats there. For the Trent, Scho and Jo's videos are excellent education on the locks if you've never done it. On the Georgian Bay side, if you wander out of the channel, put put is the recommended speed unless you know the water. Shoals all over. It's like an under water mountain range. You can be in 6' of water and in 20' later be is 100'. But don't let that scare you. Just use common sense. To me is the most beautiful place on earth.

Highest point is Balsam lake and not the Kirkfield lift lock.

Who do you have insurance with? I am looking at a 36 foot trawler and was told it is tough to find if you do not own a boat within 10 feet of that size. I have many years experience with a 20 foot center console. Thank you!

Hi Blair - we have insurance with Geico. It wasn't an issue for us to get insurance, most likely because of the overall cost of our boat. We've heard other good stories from State Farm as well. Good luck!

They could definitely! There are variations of different locks and some do require longer lines. However, It's not realistic to have optimal lengths for every situation on board, so just traditional lines are fine enough. We use spring lines if we need extra distance, otherwise the shorter dock lines are the ones we use most often.

I have a set of shorter dock lines for the stern just for locking on our Tollycraft 44. Easier to handle.

Single handing through the Erie Canal on a very windy day in a lock where you looped a line around the cables, I grabbed the wrong line and found as the water level neared the top that a too short line may require extreme acrobatics.
