The linguist, comparatist, publicist, and author John McWhorter [via live stream] has been involved in socio-political debates in the USA for many years, drawing attention to himself through critical comments on concepts such as ›white fragility‹. Currently, he sees the freedom of academic teaching as being threatened by ideological bans. A lecture on cancel culture and wokeness, followed by a discussion.

As a Nigerian-immigrant currently working and schooling in North America, I have come to one conclusion: Social Justice, wokeness and progressivism can ONLY exist in a developed, liberal and first-world nation/region where there are very few existential threats and where the purposeless masses in urban areas have to create some form of ideology to fill the void in their lives. That is why it makes no sense and destroys that society. That is also why rural westerners, non-western countries and immigrants mostly tend to hate social justice and wokeness more than the native citizens.

This is true. I have never met a hardworking immigrant in the States that is pro-Social Justice, pro-CRT, super woke, etc. They are hyper-focused on building a life for themselves, for their family, for their extended family, etc. They don't care about any of this esoteric, elite nonsense.

So true orbo Akin. I live in a community where 70% of the people are from India. Of all the white households in my court it's only the woke SJW university educated one that just can't fit in. Of course they are not the ones that have to work long hours at physically demanding jobs or running a small business. The other white households came here as struggling working class immigrants, or are first generation Canadians from originally financially struggling homes, where English wasn't our first language, so we can relate to our new Asian neighbors. Our idea of diversity and inclusion with them means hanging out with food and drink, and engaging in simple conversation, while the kids are playing around us. For some reason the SJW types don't seem to be capable of just talking to non white people like they're the same as everyone else. Every conversation with them is about oppression, colonialism and how hard it must be to live in a racist western country. They're absolutely clueless that average working people regardless of their culture or color, don't care about CRT and social justice. They also appear to think everyone belongs to two monolithic cultures with singular mindsets and identities, the white oppressor and the, apparently to them, inferior non white oppressed, and that everyone is equally obsessed about it. Even while aware that some of us, including me, have experienced life under a dictatorship, and know full well what oppression is. They of course fully ignore this inconvenient fact since it doesn't fit their narrative, and focus entirely on the historical injustices of the European oppressors, that they, and no one else they know, could've been responsible for. Nothing says tone deaf like telling a bunch of Hindus about the white theft/appropriation of Islamic numerals, which everyone, except I guess them, all knew were originally Indian. They also got offended when I brought up that us Greeks like the Hindus, had also suffered centuries of oppression under Islamic masters, and that half us had been exterminated by the time we got our freedom. They simply told me that that kind of talk fosters Islamophobia. I guess they felt I was wedging into their imaginary special bond that their wokeness grants them with our neighbors, while contradicting their delusional perception of how the real world has always functioned. So they weren't too happy when the conversation went to the Indo-Pakistani and Greco-Turkish conflicts, and how India had sided with Greece over the Turkish occupation of Cyprus. Around them one is permitted to speak of only one peoples misdeeds, and appreciate their efforts to absolve themselves of injustice through a lot of SJW talk. Needless to say they've been increasingly behaving and treating their white neighbors as privileged outsiders. Too bad they still haven't realized that everyone starts to politely excuse themselves from the conversation, as soon as they start evangelizing about the evils of western civilization, and oppression. Personally I can't wait for one of them to root for the wrong cricket team around the wrong person, it just might get them a lesson on diversity.

Just today I thought that it seems that a certain very vociferous group seems to want to reject logic and reason and return to superstitious beliefs. I would like to have asked John what he thought of this social contagion affecting corporations. My own conglomerate has employees undergoing a series of diversity sensitivity training that is so racist/homophobic itself you'd think Archie Bunker was in charge of the program. I'm increasingly convinced CRT is run by white supremacists. As a gay man open at work, Il cringe each time corporate/HR sends out mass emails that suggest gay men suffer from illnesses more often than the general population including intestinal disorders. This is supposedly to make employees less homophobic. John mentioned how CRT supporters lack any empathy. I know this firsthand as any attempt to address this insensitivity with Wokesters is impossibile. They are soulless. We used to have a saying back in the 80s when PC first appeared: "Give me an honest bigot over a condescending liberal."
@ChickVicious237
@ChickVicious237 3 года назад
You're definitely correct, for example the Oregon State Educational System deciding to do away with a "white supremecist-style" math that requires students to come up with a single answer, because certain groups of people are statistically falling behind in math. To tell kids they are just incapable of doing math as well as other kids because of their race is an abomination, and acknowledging a discrepancy just enough to make such a policy but fire anyone who dares bring it up directly in an attempt to address it in a helpful way. I've said the same thing, these people have no idea how much actual white supremacists are cheering these ideas on. And Jordan Peterson's brought up several times that these anti-bias trainings seem to cause the opposite of intended responses in participants, and there's been sufficient evidence of this for years.

John McWorter has moved his argument on over recent months. The analogy to religion and zealots is a smart marketing move and allows critique of the theories (are you really saying black lives don't matter? I'm saying religious zealots are dangerous. And you are a religious zealot). Helps carry the fight back without conceding one's own terrain. How centrists communicate with these people is key because they've been slick with their communications (im saying All lives matter, for example, is an ineffective response to their cleverly crafted mantras). Very nice lecture, even with the guinea pigs, thanks.
@adamhuntley8719
@adamhuntley8719 2 года назад
He's not really saying they are religious zealots exactly. He is saying there are ways people engage with ideology when thinking about it within their "theology" that is different from rational discussion. This is why it is difficult or impossible to reach such people. One person thinks they are having a discussion on race whereas the other is defending their faith without the self awareness that that is what they are doing. John was as brilliant as always, but there’s an aspect of this that wasn’t touched on at all. They’re obsessively concerned about power differentials of what? The answer is in their attitude to identity, which not only fetishises group identities but essentialises them. They’re not interested in power differentials within groups (based on any number of factors), only between them. They completely reject both the idea of individuality but also universality and a common humanity. For all the talk of Intersectionality the religion is obsessed with essentialised and deterministic definitions of people’s identities. Race and ethnicity being most obvious ones, but gender and sexuality are others. It’s not only the obsession with power differentials that’s the problem it’s that even within that narrow perspective, they’re only interested in certain power differentials based on an anti humanist view of who we are. It’s the combination of these two things that’s so truly toxic.
@EM-cg4iy
@EM-cg4iy 3 года назад
Excellent point. The obsession with immutable characteristics always being the root of the power differential is wrongheaded.
@TriggeredJelly
@TriggeredJelly 3 года назад
Brilliantly put. In addition, there's constant mixing of culture and nature when it comes to deciding on a definition for these "essential" identities. For example, what does it mean to be a man/woman? Being masculine/feminine or being biologically male/female? Is being straight/gay about sexual desires or lifestyle choices? Is being black about melanin levels or speaking ebonics "like all real African Americans do"?
@daffyduck4674
@daffyduck4674 2 года назад
@@TriggeredJelly I think the two things go hand in hand. Those who see everything through a identity group + power lens, always seem to also act as gatekeepers on what’s an authentic understanding of any particular identity. You see the dishonest comments often from white people that they’re going to be silent and ‘listen to people of colour’. That JMcW, Ibrahim X Kendi, Adolph Reed Jnr, Thomas Sowell are about as different politically as it’s possible to get escapes them and make the whole thing a nonsense (They of course mean you listen to Kendi & dismiss everyone else). When it comes to sex & gender it’s all so incoherent it makes my head hurt.

Brett and Heather may seem like they like to smell their own farts from time to time but they discuss things they've seen and experienced. Unlike Tim and Dave, they don't focus solely on one or two topics, they discuss other things as well. True, they criticize the left sometimes, but they don't push for a shift to the right side. From what I've seen, they try to unify people somewhere else rather than push them to one side or the other (ex. their Unity campaign during the last election). Some of their discussions on things like COVID may be used by the right, by I don't think that's intentional. They've repeatedly said COVID is something to be taken very seriously. For the longest time they were the only ones I heard talk about long Covid and organ damage. But that's my take away anyway. I'm just a person spending way too much time writing a reply to a stranger on RU-vid.

Love McWhorter and have made similar comparisons of CRT and Progressivism to religion. However, he neglects something important about a religion like Christianity; the idea of a God, a creator, a truth outside of us was an impetuous for curiosity and discovery, not an obstacle or cheapening of those things. In contrast, wokeness (which I do compare to religion) focuses inward, downward, it destroys rather than loves, is arrogant about containing truth rather than excited to seek it.

Exactly. This isn't meant as a criticism of McWhorter, but it's not a new or insightful idea at all. It was discussed 7 years ago when I started noticing the problem and 'social justice as religion' was arrived at independently by random schmucks online. I think I even remember attempting to write down my own description of the "woke" religion (though of course we didn't use the word woke back then). It might be a correct analysis but it's also somewhat pointless. It certainly won't convince the woke faithful. The use of recognizing them as a religious movement is for those who are heathens to the faith. We must realise that there is no debate to be had with the woke and associated ideologies because their conception of the good is fundamentally incompatible with mine. While I would once have been happy for them to have their own area where they implement their insanity, I now realise that they cannot tolerate anyone living outside of their system and so it's an existential battle (which they may have already won).

Here an interesting parallel: Nietzsche wrote about a dusty province of the Roman empire, where a new religion sprung up among a subjugated people. In the early stages, it was all about battling power differentials, about resentment against the masters. Nietzsche even found a line in Tellurian in which he said that the glory of heaven will be all the greater because the saved will be able to watch the eternal torture of their former masters. But then Christianity was suddenly became religion of the Roman Empire. They went from being fed to lions to running the Colosseum. Nietzsche argues that when these power-vilifying Christians took power and became the thing they hate, they invented self-loathing, original sin, guilt for normal feelings, and all that repressive Christian stuff we know. If wokeism really is a new religion, it is moving much faster. It took centuries for the Roman counterparts of every university dean and HR department to Christianize. But the holders of power of our day became woke within a decade. Maybe that's too fast for the woke to notice that they had become the entrenched downpunchers they vilify, not the uppunchers that they style themselves to be. But they will notice eventually, won't then? So what happens then?

I have followed John McWhorter for many years and respect his insights. However, bunching together those people dubbed members of the “Intellectual Dark Web” and referring to them as anti-vaxers is an exaggerated claim. What distinguishes the people categorized as members of the IDW is that they are committed to classical liberal values (especially free thought and free speech). They are logical and data-driven in their thinking and are willing to acknowledge their mistakes when they make them. I see John McWhorter, in spirit and in intellect, as being something of a stealth member of the IDW. I believe that being a shrewdly diplomatic person, who wants to stands up to extremism while not being canceled himself, John chooses to distance himself from those IDW members who are the most severe critics of wokeness. Anyone who reads serious histories of the world religions can come to understand that they have, at best, principles in common, starting with the Golden Rule. One such history is “The Great Transformation” by Karen Armstrong. The Golden Rule is nowhere present in the Woke takeover of academia where it has occurred. Nor are its derivative processes forgiveness and redemption. An alternative categorization is “cult.” Merriam Webster defines “cult” this way: >> Definition of cult 1 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious (see SPURIOUS sense 2) also : its body of adherents the voodoo cult a satanic cult >> What’s important is an accurate categorization. Thoughts?

Interesting comment, not too often I come accross another person that understands all religions share a common root, or at least philosophical foundation... Although, I would say some principles (rules) go back further than the "golden rule", which as I recall was Confucius; who, mentioned that a few hundred years before what that was stated in the Gospel of Matthew. Then again, I think some of the first parts of the Torah go back to at least 1300 BCE. Regardless, as you asserted and I would agree, the principles found in religious and philosophical views are being set aside for various self-centered, self-interested, and self-dealing views. Pretty sure Moses, Confucius, Voltaire, etc. would all be "cancelled" today, so to speak.

Note: it's not a competition or race to notoriety, nor a competition to avoid notoriety. That's never anyone's aim. Stick to the transmission of your knowledge and experience - and do it with courage.

Thank you, John McWhorter. I feel less alone listening to your brilliant common sense--common sense is remarkably uncommon these days, and I'm heartened to hear you uphold it. And thanks for championing Don McNeil and others who have been treated so unfairly.

Disappointed that John did not come to the defense of Bret Weinstein and J Peterson, neither of whom are from the right. In the case of BW, the suggestion is outright absurd.

Peterson is on the right, he says so himself (Oxford debate amongst other places). The real problem is with stigmatising somebody for no being lefttis.

@@GingerDrums I hadn't heard him classify himself that way, though I would gladly place him on the 19th century liberal wing of the right which stands against progressivism. He's clearly not a leftist. With regard to your other point, you are absolutely correct. The problem is with stigmatising someone for not being a leftist. "Right-wing" is often used and taken to mean something negative. You might disagree with me because I take it further: I now think there is a fundamental problem with someone being a leftist. This doesn't mean all leftists are wrong or immoral or that I would discount a person for simply being a leftist. For example, many anti-war people are leftists and their reasons for being anti-war are often good. Many leftists will have a moral pang about public schools becoming modern day residential school indoctrination centres EVEN IF they happen to agree with the values and ideas with which the children are being indoctrinated. That is, they still value autonomy and parental rights.

@@GingerDrums Wrong. His comment was a joke, not that it matters either way but he does clarify. You need to listen to the whole lecture if you are going to comment. He has stated many times he's neither right or left.

@@GingerDrums Folks have forgotten the meaning of the terms CONSERVATIVE and LIBERAL. The distinctions of "RIGHT vs LEFT" also are being used to describe political views but are limiting . For instance.. it is said that you go too far in both directions you meet up. So somone who is on this linear scale on the LEFT.. is going soooo far LEft that they are "Right".. I think it is confusing to rely too heavily on the LEFT vs Right label. Jordan Peterson has also been called a Nazi... and yet he has talked extensively AGAINST Nazism and Facism.. (look that up too!). He has made references to the Gulag Archipelago work and how Stalinist Soviet Russia was brutal and comparing and warning society of the dangers of leaning too far into that model. Peterson is a more nuanced figure and It is disappointing that folks who claim to be LIBERAL refuse.. outright refuse to listen to ANYTHING he has said. They are just entrenched in their ideologies and have lost the way.

McWorther's Zoom argument was pretty bizarre. This stuff started waaay before Covid and if anything people are getting kind of sick of it in the last few years which overlapped Zoom and Covid.

Saint George Floyd, ( May Blessings be Upon his name ) , was in no way, shape, or form, was ‘murdered’. He had enough illegal drugs in him to kill a herd of dinosaurs. He continued to resets arrest. The thug killer himself. Plain and simple. Like officer Wilson that shot another saint, Saint Michael Brown of Ferguson, (May Blessings be Upon his Name ), was shot after he tried to murder a police officer doing his duty. Both of these officers should have stayed of themselves, instead of martyring career black criminals just because they were from the black race. Try consuming some Thomas Sowell and Colin Flaherty. Along with Jared Taylor.

Every time I hear John or Glenn Lowry say "the murder of GF" I sigh and think REALLY. I appreciate the fact that they have both changed their opinions, (after they watched The fall of Minneapolis documentary) and now believe that Derrick Chauvan is innocent, but it really is something that they believed the "narrative" for so long when the evidence was clear for everyone to see at least from the time of the (rigged) trial.
