Funnily enough, we actually DID get an actual horror themed Spider-Man film. It was a short fan film released earlier this year called "The Spider" starring Chandler Riggs (yes, Carl from The Walking Dead) as Peter. Honestly, I think it's pretty solid all things considered. Also, the 70s Hulk show gave us 2 iconic things that became a staple of the Hulk mythos: 1) Banner's eyes changing color as a sign of the transformation. 2) The immortal line, "Please don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
@@MattsMediaReviews I'm a huge Hulk fan, and I love the TV series. I don't mind changes in an adaptation as long as you keep the spirit of the source material, which I believe they did well. Plus, it's cool how Al Ewing took some stuff from the show and put it into his Immortal Hulk run, namely the sci-fi horror tone and a reporter character named McGee.
I remember a B-movie company (I want to say Full Moon but don't quote me on that) that sort of did a Spider-man horror movie in the early 00's that sounds like this version of the spider man horror movie in it a comic book fan working for a company researching genetic engineering with spiders injects himself to become their version of Spiderman and slowly turns into a spider with his webs coming out of his abdomen.
Thanks for that tip about The Spider, I just watched it and it was a great ten minutes! I was born in 76 and remember The Hulk as a kid, iconic series!
Story : my dad was born in the 70s and hes a marvel veteran nerd and he absolutely loved the incredible hulk tv series growing up, ive seen him watching the original episodes on the sci-fi channel a few times, anyway, a few years ago i set myself a goal, find him the entire tv series on an official dvd as a christmas present, turns out it was pretty easy and i got it from amazon, he called me on christmas afternoon, and was basically speechless, tbh i thought it was gonna be difficult because as far as i know, the 70s spiderman tv series has never been released on an official dvd since ive looked multiple times, btw thanks for explaining that she hulk project, ive seen those images of that cancelled she hulk before but i always assumed that was from the hulk tv series, nevee knew it was one of marvels massive list of cancelled projects.
@@HSB819 love that story🖤 And yeah, they never released “The Amazing Spider-Man” on home media, past the VHS age. :/ And you’re so welcome! Thanks for watching!!
I was also born in the 70's. I don't know why but it seems like perfect timing. We got to see so many things come into being. Sounds like your father has a great son
I was born in the 60’s, grew up in the 70’s. Loved the Hulk tv show. It was simply great writing. And Bill Bixby is for me the quintessential David "Bruce" Banner.
The Hulk and Spider-Man cancellation absolutely gutted me, to see the black suit and Nicholas Hammond as a fun Peter (and I've always liked how his Peter looked despite the lack of wit) would've been amazing. Why couldn't that be one of the TV movies :(
And I also always disliked how they Never had any Of Peter's villains like I get Sandman and rhino would be hard to do given the budget but Tinkerer, chameleon, kraven the hunter Green goblin [if they hone in on the trick element of his Halloween gimmick],mysterio,Hammerhead and others that wouldn't hurt the budget.
5000 views and 990 subs...Jesus, people are really getting lazy and forgetting that support is the best way of showing you like content. You have yourself a new sub. ❤
Yes, you're actually right about that. It seems as though the article I read that on misquoted what Claremont had really said. I will have to make a comment correcting myself on that. Thanks for pointing that out!
I wonder if that's why they had Byrne do Jean's first (of many) resurrections in an issue of Fantastic Four? I always thought it was odd to do it there.
This has somehow quietly become one of my favorite new media related channels. I love deep dives on canceled/obscure stuff like this; keep up the great work.
Kenneth Johnson’s disrespect for the source material is a big reason why I can’t get into the 70s Hulk show. He acts as though none of Bruce Banner’s personal struggles and inner turmoil were ever in the comic books and that HE was the one who introduced those themes
Oh yeah, totally. It’s always been a really irritating, pretentious stance. And you’re so right; he did NOT introduce those elements to the mythos by any means.
@@MattsMediaReviews exactly! Even the people who produced other superhero shows around that time did at least a tiny amount of research on the sources they were adapting. If he had opened just one comic he would’ve seen that the Hulk was already a character with deep seated trauma and personal issues. To be completely fair though, at least he didn’t do what Cannon Films almost did with Spidey
@@AkiraLionPilot oh absolutely. I guess Peter David explored it a lot more after this shows’ release, but, there was still plenty of stuff to draw from. Also, I seem to remember an interview where Kenneth Johnson talked about wanting the show to feel more like “Faust” and “The Strange Case of Jekyll and Hyde” instead of its comic book origins. I find that funny for a couple reasons. The Hulk has very obviously been influenced by Jekyll and Hyde since the beginning, but- Jekyll and Hyde was considered trashy upon its initial release. A “dime store” novel. Also, these are like the most famous horror-thriller novels ever, outside of like Dracula and Frankenstein. It just feels so pretentious.
Even though I love the show, I mostly agree. I think he might have done Banner traveling and helping people first but the internal struggle, man on the run, and Jekyll and Hyde themes were there from the beginning. What makes it worse is that he pretty much directed superhero shows before Hulk.
WHYYYYY does every movie studio feel like they need to “reimagine “ the characters?!? There are literally DECADES of amazing source material. Use that!
17:12 Fun Fact: Banner’s name was changed from Bruce David to David Bruce Banner because TV executives thought the name Bruce was too g4y. (You mentioned it!)
The Incredible Hulk TV Series was so damn influential, Al Ewing used it as a basis for his Immortal Hulk run back in 2018-2021 In a way, Immortal Hulk vindicated the 70’s Hulk TV Series by really getting why the show was great while doing its own thing throughout the rest of its length
I love the black suit so it would’ve been cool to see adapted. And it probably would’ve been a helluva lot more comic accurate than what we got in Spider-Man 3.
There was also the failed attempt at making a weekly series based on Power Pack which only a pilot was made and then aired randomly on Fox Kids years later. I believe its on RU-vid tho. Its hilarious how they use the score from Edward Scissorhands as the temp music.
I just watched that for the first time the other day, while working on this video! I almost included it, but ultimately didn't since the pilot was actually made. So crazy that exists.
Hey! Yes I am actually thinking about taking suggestions! I have a Hulk video in mind, and I’d love to do more X-Men. I have an X-Men related cover recorded, that I think I might it post here. I’ll make a community post on my page soon asking you all about this!!
Bixby/Ferigno Hulk will always be my Hulk and Hammond always my Spider-Man and thats saying a lot with how much I originally disliked the lack of comic faithfulness. I'd have been in heaven if they had crossedover (like we kids were all assuming was "just around the corner"). Shame not as many of us Hammond Spider-Man fans left or maybe we'd have gotten our Spider-Man to at least cameo in the No Way Home movie. Great videoby the way; subscribed.
I'll say this for the black Daredevil costume in Trial of the Incredible Hulk...it's been a lot more influential than anyone probably expected at the time. Inspiring Daredevil's 'prototype' costume in Frank Miller's Man Without Fear arc, and by extension, the Netflix series, is a pretty great legacy, for an 80s TV movie costume.
Universal put a copyright claim on this video for using a small snippet of “The Lonely Man” lmao If there’s an awkward cut/jump in the video, that’s why.
Scantily clad Brigitte Nielsen circa 80s/90s? Yes please! I remember seeing the stills a comic convention at some point and I mean Nielsen's stature and physical presence was hard to fault, alhough for that time period I can't imagine why Cory Everson was not considered.
Im looking forward to seeing your channel grow! Have you thought about doing more lost media icebergs? The things you went over in the spiderman one were so obscure and i didn't see in other icebergs, it was pretty really well done!
I’ll definitely do another Spider-Man iceberg! I’ve noticed a few people have requested a few different topics so I gotta try to navigate what to do next as well.
I remember being scared of a hulk movie poster (probably for the Incredible Hulk) as a child and I asked my dad what hulk was and he said « it’s a man that turns into a green wrestler by slowly shedding his shirt due to radiation » lol I didn’t knew he was referring to the old tv show
Great video!! I've always been somewhat interested in Marvel's (and DC's too) history of failed proyects or made ones. Plus, my father actually made me watch some of those old TV movies when I was a boy (mainly The Incredible Hulk show and the pilot for The Flash), so this video going for the more obscure, less pointed out on RU-vid failed attempts is awesome to have (also, I just realized Bob from Good Luck Charlie was the first Thor, like what!?).
She Hulk used to be a model for year before she switched to law school. The reason for this was because she was a country girl who came from the middle of nowhere and once she became She Hulk she took the first job offer she could get to make ends meet. Eventually she used to design her own clothes, hence why Nielsen has her own clothes. She Hulk didn't fully embrace her job as a lawyer until she met Louise Grant AKA Blonde Phantom during the Sensational She Hulk run in 1989 since by that point she began to break the fourth wall more often and demanded a more high status profession. She did go back to being a model occasionally in the comics like back when Cindy Crawford was at the peak of her popularity. My guess is that Brigitte Nielsen's She Hulk script was written somewhere in the early 90s when the lawyer persona of She Hulk was still an on and off endeavor depending on the time the stories in the comics where taking part.
NGL I actually think the unreleased Fantastic Four movie was good. So far it’s the most accurate comic to screen adaptation of the FF, and despite its budget, it gives us a Thing suit on the level of the 90’s TMNT. I also think that despite the differences, 80’s Thor is peak casting. Eric Allen Kramer not only looks identical to comic Thor (in looks, not in costume) but he also nails the loud voice and short Shakespearean speeches comic Thor is famous for. And I’m giving all this praise as a ZOOMER.
Lol I’m a zoomer too and I actually DO like the FF movie. The joke was just to point out that their second project with marvel still didn’t really pan out.
I read once that there was a rumor that Tobe Hooper (who did in fact read comics) was the one who tipped off Marvel what was about to be done to Spidey He didn't mind the story in the script, he just felt it shouldn't be associated with Spider-Man. IIRC he was responsible for a later horror movie with that story.
I remember seeing the She Hulk pics in Comics Scene magazine. I also remember the cancelled Incredible Hulk/Spider-Man crossover. I really wanted that to happen!
THEY SHOULD'VE DONE IT. IT'S JUST MAKES SENSE. BTW PETER&DAVID GOT A LOT IN COMMON. BOTH R SCIENCE NERDS, WEAK GUYS, SCIENCE MADE THEM INTO STRONG HEROES. IT'S BEEN FUN TO C... SPIDY&HLK WORKING TOGETHER...
For a 1990s Luke Cage film a guy that's physically bigger than both Laurence Fishburne and Wesley Snipes the best choice would have been Ving Rhames but he could never under any circumstance do Pulp Fiction, Ever.
A quick redaction: Claremont actually tried getting Jim Shooter to NOT resurrect Jean in the books for the film's release. I just realized the source I had gotten this from misinterpreted Claremont's words.
Second She Hulk is the only one I heard of because I saw the pics of Bridget Neilson, pronounced NEELSON and not related to a certain TV astronaut, in the costume and make up.
Great vid. I appreciate the effort you put into this. Some of those ideas were awful, like the Daredevil. I would have liked to see the Spider-Man/Hulk crossover.
*IS* that Bridget Nielsen? it really looks like Julie Strain to me, and I know she was interested in playing She Hulk at some point [edit: yeah, I guess it is. Weird]
Hey thanks! Most of these are yet-to-be-released tunes from my project, Spirits of Silo. Currently, that’s only on instagram and TikTok. Two of the songs in this video (this red cloak, and scared to pretend) are from my old project, Spinoza, which is still on all streaming platforms. :)
That Daredevil just needed a better mask and gloves. I remember a Punisher series was in very very early development in the early 90’s. It was going to be like the show Hunter. Not sure if Frank would wear the classic costume.
Definitely will. Also, the audio on my mic seemed distorted on this video. Not sure what happened when this video exported, but it will all be fixed for next time. Thanks for subscribing!
I will always find it funny that Stan the Man hated the Spider-Man live action series from the 70s, but praised the Japanese version when it took so many liberties with the source material. Personally, I would have loved to have seen a Hulk and Spider-Man team up in the 80s.
The main reason Stan liked Supaidaman was the fact that the suit actor crouched a lot and walked around in a similar man. Stan felt that despite all of the differences, this portrayal was closer to the Spiderman in the comics.
Very interesting indeed! Depending on budget and knowledge + respect of source material always are the factors that must be considered first. Then the level of tallent involved such as director and actors, that will make it happen. Putting this aside, the rest is all about; "Can we translate the content from the comic books to the silver screen?". Some Marvel characters that are awesome, but also VERY difficult to make a fully working movie out of. The best example I always think of is the Silver Surfer! He is very iconic in the Marvel universe and somewhat of an OP character with decent wisdom, cosmic powers and is mostly written to serve Galactus the World Eater.... but how to make a decent movie all about him with-out using the Fantastic Four, Thor etc-etc is the big question (?). The most obvious way is an origin story of how he became the SIlver Surfer (yes to save his world...) but then what? Cruising around in the universe and finding new worlds for Galactus to consume will not be a very interesting story to work with alone, and we can't for obvious reasons related to the source material make him "rebell" against Galactus in the very same movie as that would be major rushed = not work with the audience or overall movie critics. We have seen a lot of portrays of famous Marvel characters, but then they got abandoned for various reasons with-out never finnishing there potential stories. Examples of that in my mind are "The Punisher", "Daredevil", "Wolverine", "Hulk", "Ghost Rider" and "Venom". The Punisher we have had like 4 different variations of with 4 different actors (Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jame, Ray Stevenson & Jon Bernthal) and yet NON of them we saw go deeper into the Punisher lore and great potentials of taking on various enemies and villians. I liked both Jane & Stevenson's portrays as they felt we could build more with sequels, especally Stevenson where we skipped the murder of family story we all know about and jump direct into his War on Crime crusade to bring down all the nasty criminals that escape justice. We saw a great portray with FINALLY having his most known enemy in "Jigsaw" as big baddie + eliminating a big mafia family and his side-kick "Micro" with him. However, again it stopped after that. We never got to see any more movies where the Punisher would be up against the likes of; "Wilson Fusk the Kingpin" and his syndicate or "Barracuda" or "Bullseye" or "Bushwacker" or various Mafia clans.
Im only here to see that incredible symbiote spidey suit. Every time they try to make a comic book accurate suit in irl it looks so damn good (prototype sam raimi suit)
another informative video, amon these, I want the hulk and spider-man telemovie to happen the most. Also the cancellation for the Luke Cage movie is hilarious.
Im sure you have been made aware that black Spidey suit is Not the symbiote suit. This is the black Secret Wars suit. Similar but the black suit came first. He sometimes brings it out of storage when he is pissed.
He didn’t get rid of the symbiote until issue #258 which was November 1984. He got the symbiote around spring of that year, which is when this TV movie was going to be released. So that means it would be emulating the symbiote at the time. The secret wars suit *is* the symbiote which came before he got a black cloth costume emulating the symbiote btw
Have to admit I didn't know about the Nicholas Hammond Spider-Man and Incredible Hulk crossover I would love to have seen that I always love the Old Nicholas Hammond Spider-Man even though the biggest super villain he fought was the Chinese Yakuza
While that She-Hulk did look really bad, at least she was actually on screen and not some poorly animated cartoon. Still waiting on them to bring my girl to live action, because god damn.
Actually it was Kenneth Johnson that changed Banner's name to David, He was the one that said Bruce sounded too gay. I wonder what Bruce Campbell had to say about that.
I'd took battling in a motel animatronics over pitch black mess of the final battle, with actors faces stuck over crappy CGI cartoon in Hulk. At least insect convicts sound like an action movie enemies, while rocks, river, weather, airing psychological traumas and winning with emotional harm are not.
Oh damn, that Spider-Man movie. Somewhat comforting to know that some things never change and Hollywood would always do stupid things with their properties if left unchecked, just look at Sony (or hell, certain things in the MCU). I'd love to see it out of morbid curiousity though.
Damn it i wish all thos project didint cannceled but sad kevine andrew xmen will be fire just mel Gibson as Wolverine he will give more vibe as comic accrent wolverine same with bob Hoskins but hoskins when he was cast he was 48 years old
