Irving Weissman, professor of developmental biology at Stanford University Medical Center, addresses what cancer stem cells are, how they maintain themselves and why they may be resistant to some current treatments. Weissman also talks about the "don't eat me" signal and how it relates to the growth of certain types of cancer cells. Find out how Stanford scientists and clinicians are working to identifying cancer stem cells in many types of tumors and how they have used that information to develop new therapeutic strategies.

As Dr. Weissman says if get rid of the cancer stem cells you would get rid of the cancer, but how would you prevent normal stem cells from becoming future cancer stem cells?

It concerns me that certain deductions are made with reference to any transplanted population of cells without regarding issues in terms of transferred expressed defensive factors or so-called 'epi-genetic' inclusions. This cannot be deemed a minor issue, since we know cancers of all types express sialic acids that bend over or mask various proteins. These sialic acids or sugars are not just cell bound, but permeate the environs of the cell. Such effectively defeat somatic immune response.
