Yes!! When she was saying marriage is “emotional labor” for women, I wonder if this woman has ever actually seen a healthy relationship before? My husband puts my needs above his own everyday. Women can easily manipulate good men by simply crying! (Not that we should ever do that, I’m just saying it’s the truth.) There have been only a handful of times in our marriage when my husband wasn’t able to be strong emotionally for a brief period of time and I was absolutely glad to support him during those times. When his own father was dying, I was strong for him and for his family because I love them. The truth is, no matter how much crap my husband is dealing with, if I need him, he will drop everything to be there for me. When I married my husband I wouldn’t clean and cook because I thought it was sexist. My husband is very masculine. But he wasn’t toxic in any way. Our first winter together he cooked and cleaned and watched me struggling to shovel the driveway and freeze my butt off pumping gas. Just little daily things. He just let me do what I wanted to do and would say things like “I would love to shovel the driveway for you. But I don’t have time to make a real dinner and shovel. How about we both throw a boxed pizza in the oven and make our lunches for tomorrow. Together. And then I’ll shovel the driveway.” That unconditional love and understanding made me realize I as an individual was the problem. Not all men. Today he comes home with dirty hands and clothes from a long day of working. He is greeted with a hug and a hot plate of dinner. My parents are still married 35 years and going strong, they are a power couple, holding each other up. My dad supports my mom and puts her on a pedestal like a queen, while my mom embraces his masculinity and respects it. Perfect balance. A true woman and man In my eyes.

Same here. My Dad died, though, but they had 26 years together, and had he lived, they would still be happy together. When I look back, in their relationship they were both on the pedestal for each other. I didn’t “come first”. But I was quite an integral part of our family. And I asked our priest once (I’m Russian Orthodox), why Dad was always first for my Mom, and Mom - for my Dad, although we are being taught that kids should come first. And simplicity of his answer surprised me. He said my parents were quite wise. They created a family where children felt important, we felt heard, loved, we had lots of attention. But Mom and Dad made sure their marriage was happy and a good place for their kids by putting each other first. Because in a happy, harmonious and loving marriage - children will be happy. No matter how much parents focus on their kids - if parents are unhappy with each other, their children will inevitably suffer, no matter the amount of attention and love towards them from an unhappy mother or miserable father. And everything made sense. Their relationship gave us a good model to want in our relationships when we grew up. Once thing that makes me sad - Dad passed away when they were still young, he just turned 49. Many years passed. And my Mom never found a companion. No one in her eyes can ever live up to what my Dad was for her. We tried to make introductions, we tried to invite their friends, who were also widowers. And no one was ever good enough for my Mom to even date - go on a vacation, a dinner, to have fun. She is totally immersed in the world of us, her grandkids, her friends. And here is a question I am still trying to answer for myself. My parents were together as friends since they were 3 and 4 years old. They began dating in their teen years, then got married. Was it their wisdom that gave us this family environment or was it the fact that they literally grew up together, that they felt as one whole when they were together? Or was it both?
