Candide (1759) - Humorous, biting, and satirical, Voltaire’s famous book tells the story of the optimist Candide. Taught that everything is for the best by his professor, Candide then sets out into the world and learns difficult lessons from the school of hard knocks. He maintains his optimistic view as long as he can. However, after a while his confidence in this simpleton philosophy begins to erode. But don’t worry, the honest Candide develops a new outlook to make the best of his life. Enjoy!
Quote from book referring to European wars "Christians buying guns to kill other Christians?"
GBOT Rating: Story - Good, Reading - Very Good.
Michael York is a British actor who has worked in television, movies, theater, and animated productions since 1967. He starred in The Three Musketeers (audiobook on this channel), Logan’s Run, the Austin Powers trilogy and half a dozen Simpsons episodes among many other productions. His voice is ideal for this audiobook.
P.S. Composer Leonard Bernstein turned Candide into an operetta in 1956. Two marvelous songs from it, which you can find on RU-vid, include “Best of All Possible Worlds” and “Make Our Garden Grow”

Valid today. Ignore the media -know nothing of what goes on in politics. Rather, work to cultivate ur garden produce much performing a service and u will live a happy life. Noting that all that happens brings u to a very sacred moment in your time on earth.

Another book my father impressed upon me. I was 12, just before my parents had separated. Best of all possible worlds.

Such is life in the best of all possible world's! I've repeatedly said, in the worst of it all, everything was made for a purpose, then errors have purpose! (Mocking satire!)

"'Optimism,' said Cacambo, 'What is that?' 'Alas!' replied Candide, 'It is the obstinacy of maintaining that everything is good when we are all miserable.'"

"'Do you think,' said Candide, 'that men have always massacred each other, and have always been liars, cheats, faithless, ingrates, brigands, weaklings, cowards, enviers, gluttons, drunkards, misers, self-seekers, carnivores, caluminators, debauchees, fanatics, hypocrites, and fools?' "Do you think that hawks have always eaten pigeons?... If hawks have always had this same character, why do you expect men to have changed theirs?"
