Candle Making With My Grandson | Off Grid | Log Cabin Build | Self Reliance | Pioneer Life

Kieran joins his grandfather at the 1700's pioneer log cabin to help for the day. Peter runs lead balls to use as weights for the candle wicks and discusses the history of lead use and its resulting toxicity both in England and for the indigenous peoples. He melts beeswax on the open fire and Kieran helps him make candles. The two then finish the roof on the woodshed and put in winter's firewood.

most kids these days have no idea how lucky Kieran is to get to do these things and learn all of this from and with his grandfather! (I used to love going out in to the woods (the entrance to the woods was litterally at the end of their street) or his workshop with my grandfather, all the toys we played with, the old truck that was just high enough to assist the little ones learning to walk that was handed down to ALL the grandchildren and even a complete mini market stall from an old school desk, for which grandma made the fabric roof (bright blue and white striped) and taught us to make the lemonade to sell for pebbles picked from one of the paths from their garden, were all made by him in that workshop, and that same workshop is where I learned everything I know about woodworking through building birdhouses and dollhouse furniture and such, all with the assistance and under the watchful eye of my hero, a.k.a. my granddad.... I turn 32 next week and both my grandparents have unfortunatly been gone for a few years now, but man, I miss those days!)

I'm reminded of how much most kids (in my experience) actually genuinely love both learning and helping others. It's such a shame the way we currently educate/raise kids has a tendency to leave many of them feeling like they hate both of those things. I don't have a lot of solutions to offer, except that research shows we need better balance between theory and practice... and that the most important thing to learn is how to *find* answers, and how to ask others for help when you can't do something on your own.
@gayahithwen
@gayahithwen 3 года назад
I genuinely believed I hated math for such a long time, for example. But I'm actually decent at it. Not great by any stretch, I don't always have an intuitive understanding of how it works, but I can follow along fine when someone explains it well. I was just bored out of my mind because we had to do the exact same formulas over and over again, way after I had already grasped how to do them, and I wanted so desperately to feel challenged.

Peter, I have enjoyed these videos. You are a very good clear speaking knowledgeable presenter. One thing I have wondered about: Where I live (Australia) all buildings must be pre-approved by local government on drawings before construction. Their approval process is by a process and rules set by ordinances and is very inflexible. It would be just about impossible to get permission to construct an old-style cabin and outbuildings such as you have. And if they did let you build, they would never let you sleep there. After they approve your drawings (if they actually did), you would need to be a licensed certificated builder to be allowed to build it. Not that you would be taught how to do that style of construction in the certificate course, of course. Getting approval for a modern brick and tile home with internal bathrooms and toilets and with front and back doors & other things set out in the Uniform Building Code, built by a professional registered builder is of course easy. How did you get on? Did you need to get special permission? We have a few pioneer homes as museums - roped off and built inside a modern building complaint with modern regulations, which is kind of sad.
@TheWoodlandEscape
@TheWoodlandEscape 3 года назад
Thanks for your interest, Keit. Sounds like you have a few more regulations in Australia than in Canada.

It's so cool what you do with your grandson. He is in heaven with grandpa. I have made almost all of my blackpowder accessories. When my grandsons and I go shooting blackpowder they get a course in gun safety and a history lesson. But during deer season I cheat and use speed load tubes. It's so brushy where I hunt it's just more practical. The last fire that went through here was in 1910 so you can imagine the under growth. Love your channel.

Right on, your Grandson really enjoyed himself, so good to see young people learning old trades from the past. The period clothing is perfect and looks comfortable. Does somebody make everything locally? I've considered making beeswax candles but the wax is very expensive, did they raise bees back in the day on their farms to access the wax or buy in a town market? Loved the video my friend,...👍🏼
