@@RuthlessMetalYT Well that's very kind of you to say! ...for me it's not about first/last, but presentation and consistency. Ironically I put up Death Magic Doom just this a.m. without realizing today is Sweden's national day! Have a good one brother... **edit** oops, copyright got in the way of that one, but still have most of the Candlemass releases available!

@Big Matty 💪 Candlemass are still underrated, they never sold much records. They never were on the covers of the metal magazines or headlined the big festivals
My first time listening to Candlemass was when I was in the Czech Republic last year, I was on a train heading from Munich to Prague. I listened to Nightfall, then Epicus. Something about the landscape and the heavy doom riffs just melded together so well. Sometimes we can distinctly remember the first time we listen to a new band or album that we know will be one our favorite records. Thank you RM, great video! I recommend ranking either Napalm Death or Carcass, two great Grindcore/Death Metal bands.
Great video! I just got into Candlemass at the beginning of this year, and so far I’ve only listened to their first four albums, and I hope to hear their entire discography. 🤘
Great video! Definitely one of my favorite bands of all time and I am glad I grew up listening to some of their albums in cassettes. Imho Candlemass have some things that are unique: *a)* Underrated musicians (Lars Johansson is a very underrated solo guitarist, Leif Elding is a very solid bassist and Jan Lindh is indeed a great drummer) *b)* An amazing ability to change pace and melody within the same song. You can see this in their older live performances where they can string even two different songs together and there are almost 5-6 seamless pace/melody changes (with solos included) and they "just fit". *c)* Maybe I have not heard too many other bands, but Candlemass are the only band I know that can actually perform/write those odd solos where the backing guitar and bass are "doom" or "simplicity itself" and the solo guitar is almost speed/power metal (e.g. the solo in Demon's Gate). I think the only regret most people have about Candlemass is Messiah. We can all argue endlessly who was the best/favorite singer for Candlemass *overall* , but I think that there is *no argument* as to who was the best Candlemass singer for a *live show* ... A lot of things can be said about Messiah, but the man was the epitomy of "stage presense". Be well!
Great great video! I've been waiting for you to do a ranking of the Swedish doom legends! My list would have been a bit different but it's hard to rank Cmass because the quality is so high across all the albums. Leif Edling is one if not my favorite metal songwriters of all time so he can do almost no wrong in my book. Thanks also for the channel shout out and mentioning the Candlemass Chronicles. Great job!!
Happy birthday! Thanks for this awesome video - great to see Candlemass being treated with the love and respect they deserve as one of the very best heavy metal bands ever!
I truly love every Candlemass record and do appreciate that they differ, changed singers and style through the years. Also, don't forget equally great Krux.
Great Video!! I got into this band a few years ago and I absolutely love them and think they’re one of the greatest bands of all time. So many masterpieces. I have not heard chapter 6 they though and I’m surprised and intrigued now that you rank it so highly so I must listen immediately 😆.
Finally man! I've been looking forward to this video since you started this series. I was curious to know the opinion of a Swede about the discography of the most important Swedish Heavy Metal band. Your preference for the first albums is not surprising, given your usual predilection for the first records of bands in general, but I really think you should give the last two albums a second chance, which are also excellent.
Bra ranking. Jag har mest hört materialet med Messiah av förklarliga skäl. Sen såklart debuten och den senaste. Men då vet man vilka album som är Värda att lyssna på🤘
Cool list! I only listen to the three albums with Johan Längqvist on vocals, so I have a top 3: 1. The Door to Doom 2. Sweet Evil Sun 3. Epicus Doomicus Metallicus This list has made me want to explore Messiah Marcolin's albums along with the other singers' efforts.
great work as always mr ruthless - i was lucky enough to see them on the grey islands album tour here in ireland - gr8 night - robert lowe is a brilliant singer - their lead guitarist is hugely underrated - i t was a gr8 gig
My buddy and I became members #119 & #120 of the official Candlemass fan club. Do you remember Leif’s interview at Rockbox (best ever radio metal show) after Epicus? It was magical, just magical. They played Solitude and Crystal Ball. My life was never the same ever again……
Rating Chapter VI over 3 of the Messiah albums is a huge surprise. I should revisit it. Not surprised to see you rating their first album as their best though lol. Side thought: the first Krux album should get an honorary mention. I feel like that's the best thing Edling's done in the last 20 years.
I absolutely love My Funeral Dreams on Death Magic Doom, Candlemass is surely one of the greatest bands ever. The first three albums are the crowning jewel of any doom metal collection. Absolutely pummeling riffs wicked solos and vocal performances that are the best in metal, yet it is also calming in a heavy doomy way.
I totally agree with the first choice, Epicus only needs 6 songs to be perfect. What doomy and magical stories it tells along with truly epic musicianship and singing. Probably my favourite thing to listen to, if the world was ending this is the album to play.
I actually never heard Candlemass before, but when I did, I immediately fell in love with this band. There are practically no bad records. 1. Epicus Doomicus Metallicus 2. Nightfall 3. Chapter VI 4. Ancient Dreams 5. Tales of Creation 6. Death Magic Doom 7. King of the Grey Islands 8. Candlemass 9. Psalms for the Dead 10. Sweet Evil Sun 11. The Door to Doom 12. Dactylis Glomerata 13. From the 13th Sun
First of all, Happy Birthday legend! Hope you have/had an awesome day 🥳😎👊 Second of all, great ranking. I'll keep telling and recommending people how good this band is, truly underrated. Question here (bit random), do you know/like the band 'Killing Joke'? Recently discovered this band, not really metal but an great postpunk band. Let me know. Cheers :)
Nice ranking! Mine is similar: 1. Nightfall 2. Epicus Doomicus Metallicus 3. Tales of Creation 4. Ancient Dreams 5. Candlemass 6. King of the Grey Islands 7. Death Magic Doom 8. Chapter VI 9. Psalms for the Dead 10. From the 13th Sun 11. Sweet Evil Sun 12. The Door to Doom 13. Dactylis Glomerata
Total agree about chapter IV, and to other's choices to be honest, not realy disagree, one up, one down dont say something. And happy birthday by the way!🤘🤘
I remember the disappointment when Chapter VI was released, no Messiah! But when I perhaps 15 years later listened to the album with more mature ears I found a new favourite. It really is a great album! Your top 5 is pretty spot on, perhaps even top 8 :) The rest of the albums I haven't listened to enough to have an opinion where they should be placed. Next list - Abstrakt Algebra albums from worst to best. I guess that will be a rather short video ... Oh almost forgot, where in the list would you place the EP 'Candlemass sjunger Sigge Fürst'? Easily top 5!
Though I'm more into Power Metal, there was a time that I did listen to Candlemass before. From here, I say about their best albums are Epicus Doomicus Metalicus and Nightfall. Tales of Creation, Ancient Dreams and the self-titled are still good. King of the Grey Islands is kind of good. Though I admit I didn't listen to the rest of the 90s Candlemass albums and I stopped getting into Candlemass as the 2010s came, though I did listen to Candlemass occasionally. It's interesting to hear Johan Langqvist back and it looks great, though he doesn't sound the same as he was before.
Yep Epicus Doomicu Metallicus is also in my top 5 metal albums of all time, the other 4 would be the debut album by Angel Witch, Defenders of the Faith by Judas Priest, Hall of the Mountain King by Savatage and Thundersteel by Riot.
Hey great man! Any chance of doing a rank em all on Blue Oyster Cult? I know they're probably not exactly your taste of Metal, but they are seen as one of the pioneers for their first few albuks at least.
Hard to rank their best albums for me, they're all amazing in their own way. Shout out to the Rob Lowe era, he's the best Trad Metal/Doom singer of all time. Solitude Aeturnus are an amazing band.
Never, Never been into Candlemass. Nobody lend me a record, never recorded a tape. Never knew about them and only their name is known to me not too long ago. I guess only thing that was coming to me were American, English and Spanish bands. But that Epicus Doomicus Metallicus sound much more better than what I was expected.
Samarithan is an incredible song. Its a song about a good samarithan how he helped a poor man and being rewarded by angels but it still sounds evil and i cant help but think that something wicked is going on here not sure what it is, thats why its just briliant.
My Top Ten Candlemass Albums: 1) Epicus Doomicus Metallicus 2) Nightfall 3) Candlemass (2005) 4) Death Magic Doom 5) King Of The Grey Islands 6) From the 13th Sun 7) Ancient Dreams 8) Psalms For The Dead 9) The Door To Doom 10) Sweet Evil Sun
I'm probably in the minority, but I have the self-titled as my favorite, even with the boring-ass cover art. I've just gotten into Candlemass in the last 5 years and that one clicks with me better than the others.
I love sweet evil sun right out the gate. It and the self titled album is my 2 favorites. Everyone likes nightfall but I can't seem to like it that good
Chapter VI is a fucking amazing album!!! Easily my favorite album from them. I wouldn’t even call it a doom album. At least not completely. It had more in common with older Fates Warning or Omen or something in that vein. Maybe that’s why it’s my favorite. I would say the first 4 albums are good too because they do contain elements of classic power metal. It’s not doom like how Electric Wizard would be for instance. Which is good cuz I hate that type of doom lol. I’ll have to delve into the post Chapter VI albums. I remember having that 05’ reunion album and felt it was more of a 70’s Sabbath sounding album which I didn’t like but maybe I’d like it now if I heard it.
1. Epicus Doomicus Metallicus 2. Candlemass 3. Psalms For The Dead 4. King Of The Grey Islands 5. Chapter VI 6. The Door To Doom 7. Tales Of The Creation 8. Ancient Dreams 9. Nightfall 10. Sweet Evil Sun 11. Death Magic Doom 12. From The 13th Sun 13. Dactylis Glomerata
I'm actually pretty much in agreement with you, Chapter VI is fantastic, I like the Door to Doom quite a bit and found the newest album to be really dissapointing, which is a shame
I didn't know that you were going to pick EDM as your favorite as your favorite when I said that it was trendy to name it as your favorite . Other than myself I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't think that Epicus Doomicus Metalicus is the best Candlemass album. It's my third favorite. 1. Tales of Creation 2. Ancient Dreams 3. Epicus Doomicus Metalicus 4. Chapter 6 5. From the 13th Sun 6. King of the Grey Islands 7. Nightfall ( heard it too many times) Never listened to their other albums
It's hard for me to rank #2 through #5, but #1 has to be Nightfall. Not only with the sub-genre of Doom, Nightfall is one of the best metal albums ever made.
I agree absolutely with the first option, is a heavy heavy breakthrough being soooo epic and dark , i mean its just unbelievable, i bought nightfall and didnt like it compared to this one, and demons gate yes is a heavy epic doom creeper
@@RuthlessMetalYT yeap I'll agree , that's right , and I remember at age of 13 year 97 when this came out I didn't like it so much as few years later like 16-17 , I remember a summer listening pretty much to this , de mysteriis of mayhem , some manowar , rainbow but mostly this album and demystrriis , is a heavy duty bad mf overall, a gem
My ranking: 1. Nightfall 2. Epicus Doomicus Metallicus 3. Ancient Dreams 4. Tales of Creation 5. Chapter VI 6. Self-titled 7. King of the Grey Islands 8. Psalms of the Dead 9. Sweet Evil Sun 10. The Door of Doom 11. Death Magic Doom 12. Dactylis Glomerata 13. From the 13th Sun (worst album)
For some mysterious reason I have never heard Chapter VI, besides that the top 5 make pretty much sense. Been listening a lot to Krux these last years, if you are not familiar with it I highy recommend all their 3 albums.
Iwaited for this one, thanks ! and I would rate differently, for sure. from the 13th sun is as example number 2 for me. and robert lowe is fine with his band, but I dislike his voice with candlemass. I wonder why there is no full album with messiah after he left the band.
Candlemass is the best band since Mercy. Autotype changed it to Mercyful fate. I love Mercyful Fate, but they don't relate to the Candlemass family tree like Nemesis, and Mercy. I personally prefer Robert Lowe with Solitude Aeturnus, and I prefer Tales of Creation to Epicus Doomicus Metalicus. Although Sorcerers Pledge, and Black Stone Wielder, but I think Messiah blows away Linguist ever did. Its trendy to prefer EDM , great album, but Ancient Dreams, and Tales of Creation are just better
