This comes across to me as a cross between regular 10-pin bowling and skeeball. I think this is more of an Everyman sport than traditional bowling. You don't have to invest $$$ in a high performance ball and it's not as physically demanding as lugging a 14-16 lb ball.

@ohger1

I've bowled both. Ten pin is far easier. With candlepin or duckpin, you generally need to buy three balls even for weekend bowlers, and they're $75 each.. A good average in duckpin is anything above 110. Nothing like throwing a 2-8 chop right off the headpin for two pins on the first ball, and throwing two more right through the hole for a 2 box..

@iansunny1410
@iansunny1410 4 года назад
Hey maybe dumb question but are there oil patters for this type of bowling?
@peteg475
@peteg475 4 года назад
No. A thin coat of Butcher's wax to protect the lane is what was traditional. Some places put a very thin even coat of oil just to protect the lane. Supposedly synthetic candepin lanes need nothing at all. The ball doesn't hook to any real degree, so a pattern of oil wouldn't do anything in candlepins anyway. The whole game is speed, straight-line accuracy and angles.

The "King of the Palace" guys are "interesting", though I thought some of the names they gave some of the leaves and shots were a bit weird; at least I've never heard of them. I lived in RI all my life, but watched the old Channel 5 show since I was a 10-year-old kid, and I've never heard some of those names. The only negative I have about Dan Murphy (excellent bowler, great commentator, but): his use of the word "channel" in place of "gutter". A "channel ball" just makes no sense to me.

I'm noticing now that a number of new tenpin bowling alleys in Eastern Massachusetts have just been opening recently. Including a new number of Kings in Lynnfield & Burlington, and a Wamesit Lanes in Tewksbury. Another new Kings will be opening right near the New England Aquarium in 2017 too. A couple of casinos in Everett & Revere that are opening will also have tenpin lanes in one of them. If tenpins continues to grow in Massachusetts, in time candlepins may no longer become the dominant sport in the state. But usually those in New England who chooses to bowl candlepins, or duckpins and refuses to bowl tenpins is because they think they can't physically manage to pick up & hold a tenpin ball because it's too heavy for them and they might injure themselves with it. The small balls are safer and much lighter. But unfortunately, it is likely that candlepins will never spread across the United States. Because it's a too hard game, with the lack of a 300 perfect game like in tenpins. The pins are too small to make strikes like in tenpins. Plus the candlepin balls are too hard to control. Bowlers outside New England that generally uses tenpins may never have any fun with the game.

Just saying one word: Jim Ayotte throws way too hard, which always have been fascinated me regarding this sport: Deflection anyone? Jim throws so hard that the ball just bounces away, doing nothing or going straight through the deck with very bizarre leaves. What if they actually threw the ball way slower and let it deflect and the deflection doing the work in the pin deck? They would be so much more precise and I do think they would benefit from it. Unfortunate I have never got the chance to try this out, and I don't know if I ever will.

Bounce the ball off the lane near the release (typically off the foul line, I believe), landing beyond the lob line. Because it makes contact with the lane surface on the approach side of the lob line, it's not an illegal shot.

Candlepin Bowling is the most difficult Bowling type you'll ever play, even more so than 5 Pin Bowling which is only available in Canada. In other words, you can get scores in the 160 to 240 range in 5 Pin Bowling, and even a possibility of a "Clean Game" or a game where a Bowler gets a spare and/or strike in every frame easily, but struggle to get over 100 in Candlepin. In fact, when I play 5 Pin Bowling in Newfoundland, I usually have a 160 average (par score is 150, and highest score possible is 450), but if I play Candlepin, I'm lucky to get over 90 which is under the par score of 100.
