Wow! That was awesome! I knew that there was a small town down there, but to actually see parts of it, was amazing! My grandfather was a Portuguese mason, and when he came to America, one of his first jobs was working at Candlewood to make the lake. There’s a bunch of old cemetery base stones in the old property that were supposedly from there. Makes you think 🤔
Interesting. Found a grave stone built into an old fireplace here in Sherman by the town park. Nothing left but the foundation and chimney, could see the full inscription, still there. I found the cemetery by chicken rock. I know the stones were moved next to the Sherman library. Not sure about the bodies though, seems unlikely to me. I have looked for the Wanzer and New Fairfield cemeteries but the vis below 30 feet was near zero and pitch black even with a powerful dive light.
This dive is amazing! We spent summers in a house right across from Lynn Deming Park, just north of the dive. My grandfather would let me drive his boat on the lake , but I had to remain within eyesight. Therefore, I would turn around before the Narrows right above Jerusalem, as it turns out!
@@deepdiveokinawa1344 greetings. I’ve only dived from a boat so I’m not sure of any access points from shore. Haven’t been out this year but normally by now the vis is pretty low. Couple of feet at best. Less than a foot below the thermolclin. I always wanted to dive the boat ramp over on lake Lillinonah off rt 133. Been there since the 50s and who knows what’s down there. There was a small village there as well before the dam. Lake Waramaug is nearby as well with good visibility generally. There’s a state park/beach where you may be-able to dive from.
I can email the dive map and some survey maps that I made up if that’s what you would like? I went to the Sherman and New Milford town halls to get copies of the original CL&P maps.
The algae is feed by lawn fertilizer and other man made nutrients that finds its way into the water. Below the thermocline, 24’, the vis can be down to a foot because the dead algae that sinks is slow to decay do to the lack of oxygen in the thermocline. In the Fall the water at the bottom will rise as the surface water cools and sinks. Water will appear brown for a bit. I’ve done some research on this, Interesting stuff
