This video is the ultimate guide to spraying Mazda's Soul Red Crystal Paint Code 46V.

I restore Mustangs. I had a guy that wanted one of these candy Mazda colors. I told him I did not want to spray a Candy. My booth isn't clean enough to spray a candy. You get some dirt in the candy coat and you're screwed. Plus the paint was $4000!! No primer, no clear, just the base and candy. I asked the owner, what would happen if I tripped and dropped the paint?? LOL Just wasn't worth it to me. Owner didn't want to hear no, but that was my answer. Good job here!!

Hey gunny! on my old youtube account years ago I commented on your apprenticeship video as I wanted to become an spray painter apprentice. You replied and gave some advice and since then I completed my training within 3 years and now have just gone past my 4th year in the trade. When I was 17, a VERY long time ago I started taking an interest in push bike, motor bike and car colours. The one that really intrigued me was metallic red. I even experimented with trying to get a good metallic red and got as far as realising that the base coat had to be gold rather than silver that push bike frames of the day used, then they were oversprayed with clear, tinted with a coloured dye. Then a few years back I saw Mazda's "soul red". In the Australian sun that car colour absolutely pops. You made an absolutely fabulous job on that Mazda! Well done !!!

Ive not been watching RU-vid for the last few years as life gets in the way of the good stuff i see your in a pristine working environment. I remember you spraying your old metal tool chest candy so i decided to spray my LWB, Hi Top Merc Sprinter in candy orange after i watched that video. I was living in Manchester UK, bought the 3 guns i required from your "Top 10" ( including GTI Pro) from SprayGunsDirect. The van i sprayed over the Christmas period in 2016, it was done in my mates joinery workshop It was cramped, damp, leaking roof, cold, full of saw dust with shit lighting. Spayed new panels white then metalic silver with candy in the clear coat. It was a mission but once i finished spraying it i buzzin with what i had accomplished. Fast forward to this Christmas, myself and family now live in Brisbane and that Mercedes is parked outside my house. The bonnet has faded but the the rest still looks mint. Without your early video's it would be white and ordinary. Id like to thank you for your positive attitude and friendly demeanour as many a RU-vidr profess to be experts and ram home sale's. As a Builder, Joiner and Carpenter who has trained many over the last 37 years, i tip my hat to you and wish you and yours a Merry Christmas. and a fruitful New Year. The Milky Bars are on me mate.

That was by far the best spray painting tutorial I have seen for the 46V Red Gunny and not only that I think it was the best finish you have got with this colour as well👏👌 I've only done this colour once and on my scheme the candy isn't a true candy but it's just a basecoat binder with 2 different red transparent basecoat tinters added, it came out looking as it should though I was pleased with the result but it's nothing like the finish you have here🙏🙏👍John UK

Looks good as usual, you’re just about an expert with the candies,😂😂😂. Man haven’t seen the gunman pro lites in a minute., still sprays like new. Also, I believe sata has blue liner lids that’s design for water like 3m pps, I was told that the reg liner/lids use a water soluble glue to hold the liners on and could begin to deteriorate with water base, as I was told by a ppg employee rep. Also the blue ones are finer to help strain paint even better. I know your clears are different, but here in the states, I used the ec clears, (design for envirobase fast to slow) 520/530/550, and I’ve always went with a slower reducer (usually colder months ecr85/dt85, warmer ecr95/dt895, dead ass summer when it’s hell temps out side, ecr98)cause they could be finicky about about bake temp and time, the worst I’ve gotten was die back. It was a pain when I first used them trying to dial in the clears so I wouldn’t have issues, adjusting bake temp or time or both. Also don’t be afraid to mix the reducers 50:50 finer tunning. Keep the vids coming my guy, makes my day go by smoothly when I’m in the booth.

hello gunman! been watching your videos since i graduated high school in 2014. nearly a decade later and i’ve been painting since! you’ve inspired me and taught me a lot from your videos. i’ve been working at the same body shop for nearly 10 years now. a small ma and pa body shop. i wanna move forward into my career and go to a bigger body shop for bigger and better opportunities im just kinda scared since i never used fancy booths or hi tech equipment. any tips for me ?

Hi mate, I’ve done my 2k epoxy primer and 2k high build primer and ready for basecoat now, I’m using devilbliss flg 5 1.4mm tip, I’m using 2k acrylic Porsche crayon grey, supplier recommends 2 parts paint to 1 part 2k hardener and 10% 2k thinner, how would you set up the gun? Full fan / full fluid, 20 psi ? Appreciate the advice mate, after working on my van I definitely have more appreciation for the pros knowing how much prep is involved, finding it rewarding though despite being a bit stressful

Do you change from G5 to G6.5 only for resprays or do you find it matches better too? Say on a new bumper.

Fantastic work. I have a guitar that I want to paint a similar color. I have some HOK apple red candy (premixed and reduced), my preferred clear coat, but the only thing I don't have is the basecoat. Could I just get some type of copper/bronze pearl base and spray the HOK red (mixed into my clear) over top of it to get a similar result?

He gunny most clears have a 24 hour window in which you don't need to sand it to put another coat of paint on check the tds to be sure

The DV1 fan is massive. I have the fan turned out 1.25 from closed and its still a 12" pattern from 6". I dont understand why you have the doors off if youre not jambing it? To make the roof easier? Edit: Soon as i clicked play your were explaining why the doors were off.

Hi mate, I am in The Pilbara and am getting water at the end of my line (have a separator at the compressor) which I assume is from our high humidity. I have been looking for an end of line separator but can't find them - probably because I am looking for the wrong thing. I am sure I recall you speaking about them in an earlier vid. Hi! Please tell me! I have a problem with silver colors and white mother-of-pearl (three stages). The car looks stained. Stains. I use iwata ws 400 for the water base. I use ppg paint. I live and work in California. I put spectacular layers at the end, I dilute the paint like it right. What could be the problem?

You would struggle, just hire a booth. Unless you live in a really warm environment and away from people.

im finding it hard to grasp. when you spray the base, it looks like brown/copper or similar. but when hitting it with the clear it all goes very deep red. is it pigment in the clear? explain as if im an idiot pls :D i find it very satisfactory to see a paint job from primer to finish.

Got to follow him closely= after the base coats of copper comes the tricky part: 2 coats of clear with transparent color in them- ie. the candy coats. He used the Devilbiss Prolite with a TE20 aircap. Then he quickly blasted on two coats of clear clear with the ANI gun with a 1.2 fluid nozzle and a 1.3 air cap. So at least 6 coats of paint. Gunny explains the finiky details of getting this right and clean- very hard to do with that much spraying. Watch him again. Justifiably something to take pride in!

It helps coverage for the colour, it seals down the old paint, it aids adhesion, it covers any small bits of steel from prep work, it also helps fill prep scratches allowing you to prep with a coarser grit, that speeds up prep. So yeah, loads of reasons.

@@SawShotShared sorry, and the other question, no, not all candies need it, you could potentially not prime at all if the original paint was good, or even use a sand-able primer if there was lots of repairs that require it. It's more that these jobs are best with it, it's not a concrete rule.

The only problem i seam to have with candy's is that i get a very slight mottle in it you can only see it if you are really looking for it but it is noticeable

The only way to stop that is put more coats on, then the colour changes, so I always leave it, only us painters will ever know 😀

Why bake the candy coat? I just let it flash until its nice and tacky and top with regular clear.

Tricky tricky spraying everything off of the body disassembled like that..!!!... Any variation of spray technique in mid and tri coats will make each panel a different color..... Did you necessarily NEED to sealer the entire car ??? It looked like it was already in full color with no body work or primer . Why an entire respray ????

I use DC4000 for the ruby tinted clear... I spray it thru the 1.2 tip in my DV1.... Do a spray out on a metal card in correct shade sealer and determine the number of tinted coats needed... Sometimes all you need is 1 depending in if youre blending or not... Typically 2 coats is the number or 1 coat with a wet on wet orientation coat from an elevated distance... Happy painting people
