What amazes me about Tony Todd and his portrayal of the Candyman are many things: 1. To my knowledge, he’s the first and most famous black slasher villain in horror movies, and could be the only one so far: 2. Tony manages to make Candyman so handsome and yet so horrifying at the same time. You’re wooed by his deep voice but it also creeps you out at the same time. Only a very talented actor can do that. 3. Unlike Freddy, Jason and Leatherface, he doesn’t wear a mask, nor is his face disfigured. This really and effectively contrasts to his bloodied hook hand and lack of abdomen, which is horrifyingly graphic.

She didn't hypnotize herself. The director got a hypnotist to implant a trigger into her to make her like that. And she didn't like it, because it eventually got to the point where she got so uncomfortable about it she made him take it out.

I love the colour grading on this transfer of the film, it makes the reveal of Candyman all the more frightening due to the immediate contrast between his normal face and his mutilated hand. Just the way he seems to slide out of the shadows…

I’m a super horror fanatic and my favorite type of horror movies are psychological thrillers. This movie actually gave me the chills, and not many of them do that to me. Part of it, to me, is that he's not a huge asshole just killing for fun. Myers is just pure evil, Freddy does it for sadistic glee, Leatherface is doing it because someone else told him to.... But the Candyman literally just kills because he *has* to in order to survive. If people don't believe in him, he ceases to exist, and Helen made the giant mistake of publishing an article that caused a lot of people to stop believing, making it personal to him. I think that's primarily the reason why the sequels don't really hold up; they kind of forgot he wasn't supposed to be just a generic slasher villain.

Everytime I hear the name Helen I think of Candyman and giggle internally (sometimes out loud). Before the working from home due to this dreadful pandemic, I would physically go into the office at work. The bathroom there was a tiny one and the light would sometimes go out because of a power issue. At that point I would look into the mirror and say "Heleeeennnnn.." in the voice of Tony Todd.

I love the color grading on this restoration. He’s almost completely like a silhouette until he gets closer. In the earlier versions like the DVD, you can already see his face from a far, this almost gives you a slow reveal.

People always rag on the coat but it was such a stark contrast to the modern times and in a modern parking garage it seemed so out of place and made him even more menacing. Terrified the hell outta me when I was a kid. The sequels changed the coat and the hook and it just wasn’t the same.

I kind of disagree… There is some chemistry between Candyman and Helen but I wouldn’t call it love. Romeo and Juliet seemed more about teenage infatuation and obsession than it did real love.

The "Candyman" in the sequel lacks the presence of Todd's Candyman (he is Candyman). That probably is the sequel's biggest weakness, not much they could do about that, there's only one Tony Todd!

@@angryman1206 that’s the point- there was more then 1 candy man they have different story’s tony Todd’s candy man was the first but not the last that’s why in the latest sequel the guy said “Candyman ain’t a he, candy and the whole damn hive” meaning that there’s more then 1 tony Todd is just the queen bee

The new candyman had a creepy smile and a kickass coat, but Tony Todd's performance and presence on screen is purely hypnotic. This is why there will only be one true Candyman

My father was mostly a spaghetti western & army movies fan & never watched any other movies besides this d usually goes to sleep when we were watching our type of films. . But candy man got him so hooked he couldn't even get up from the couch.

his problem was not the story, in fact it was very good, that the baby from the first movie is chosen to bring back the original Candyman. In fact, I got suspicious when Anthony's skin falls off and he looks like it's a honeycomb. The problem with this film is that it has a lot, but a lot of social criticism. Even the victims of Sherman's Candyman are pure white people, deaths of people of color is only Anthony, and he was not killed by Candyman. It is 68 percent social criticism and 32 percent story, the original had social criticism, but it was not the focus of the film nor was it so notorious, if you looked for it you would realize that it had it.

@@20Hazell12 At one point she tried to do that, but he had too much power over her. He seemed to have put her in a trance. Otherwise, I agree. I'm a grown man, but if I see Candyman on the other side of an empty parking garage, I'm trying to set records for getting out of there.
