Totally with you on this review. Candy man deserves to be up there with the other iconic killers from slasher movies. If they wanted to make a movie about police brutality then do a movie about that. Don’t highjack candy man and sideline him like that.

I liked your review. This movie was used candy man as a mechanism to hammer home political messages the creators were obviously more interested in than the horror elements. Movie is not remotely scary. Well shot. Yes. Scary. No The opening scene of the original was iconic in establishing the horror elements of candyman The opening scene of this movie was focused on nothing but establishing the police brutality elements of the movie.

Agree. This movie was more of a lecture than a horror movie let alone story. Style over substance... Honestly, candy man should have followed the night house - a mystery about digging and sometimes you shouldn't dig.. you don't need to be preachy to send a message- unfortunately this movie is preaching to the choir and doesn't contribute anything new - a good message give your solutions.

I was pretty disappointed with this film, as I mentioned in my own review. The heavy-handed "social commentary" was a turnoff to begin with, but that wasn't the only problem. It was just a poorly written story. It did help me appreciate the original even more though.

Yeah, I agree with all the points you made completely. Too much pushing of political agendas, and way less about Candyman himself. Plus you just can’t hold a candle to the original, Tony Todd was born to play Candyman.. the chemistry between him and Virginia Madsen in the original was perfect. The whole movie had this dream like atmosphere that you really can’t capture again.

Like I said, while we enjoy, applaud and are inspired by the social commentary that this project so elegantly presents we also appreciate very much the reminder that the original, in tone and creepy factor still stands up to this new Candyman. I agree. The political statement for me, nothing wrong with it, though it can be much. It shouldn't overshadow Candyman. The 1st film imo was a bit of a Masterpiece bc it went into the economic issue in the black community, BUT it didn't overshadow Candyman. Caprini Green Projects was , a character. If itself. If you're gonna make a Horror film, make it. If you're gonna make a political film make it. If you wanna combine them, you'd better have some damn good writers. Well acted, looks good, had its moments but doesn't live up to the original imo.

just got done watching this movie, in the dark with headphones. i had a straight face the whole time. i thought the acting wasn’t great honestly. like really i thought it was bad. this movie felt so pretentious to me. like why did they have to make the main character a struggling modern artist? it made him very unlikable to me… and i prefer to like main characters. i cant really speak on the political issues because i haven’t lived the oppression the black community experiences every day but it felt way too forced. i don’t know it just didn’t even feel like a horror movie to me. anyways. great job on the video. subbed.

That's why the original was great because the social commentary was subtle. It treated the viewers smarter and allowed them to think for themselves. Its perfectly fine to have a message in a movie its just how the message is delivered. We don't need to be spoon fed or beat over the head to get it.
@npcimknot958

Yup. And this is another problem.. when the same people complain that there aren't enough black xxxstories, or why it always has to be about xx.. when the film makers are the ones that keep repeating the same stories, same settings, same message over and over again... ths is the problem telling xx stories.. instead of telling GOOD stories.

As a huge fan of the original 92 film and specifically of Tony Todd’s performance in it, I had super high hopes going into this one. I was happy to hear that it would continue the story from the original movie and that Anthony was the baby from the first movie and that Todd would even be in it in some capacity. Unfortunately though this reboot/kinda sorta sequel/reimagining falls flat in so many ways for me. Without spoiling anything, all of the nuance and subtlety from the original movie is gone here. The idea of Candyman being a “hive” made up of other black men that were wrongfully murdered and whom arise to become part of Danielle Robataille’s story is compelling on paper, but as it plays out in this film, it goes nowhere. It’s almost completely glossed over for supposedly being a huge part of why the tale gets passed along in the first place. So much of the plot of this new movie is just straight up nonsensical when we consider how everything worked in the original film. Say his name five times into a mirror and your death is assured. Here, even that isn’t guaranteed in some instances, and by the end of the movie, everything that made the original Candyman terrifying and memorable has all but gone right out the window. I felt like if this movie was an hour longer and spent more time unraveling the ideas it threw out there but then did nothing at all with, it could have been so much better. The original is still the best for me.

I did enjoy the story though I feel a lot was left out that should have been included regardless of the run time and it did pick up in the final act, I just wish they fleshed out some more background and included the powerful original score to add to the ambiance of the movie. I love the Candyman character, I think he did a great job. However, I would love to know more about him. Did Sherman grow up in Cabrini Green? Was he related to any of Anthony's mother's friends from the original movie? What is disability? And why the hell all of a sudden, is there more than one Candyman? And where the hell was Sherman's dialog in this film?! Tony Todd had an incredible dialog in the original Candyman, which was a part of his presence which still draws me in until this day. I really hope that if Nia does decide to do a sequel to this, she leaves Jordan Peele with this one.

I was cautiously optimistic As time went on I got excited but one day not long ago I made a stupid mistake on clicking a reviewers channel this reviewer claimed he had a source who had seen an early screening and was very disappointed. He ended up spoiling the entire movie on his channel. Even though I was disappointed and mad at myself for clicking on a channel that warned of spoilers. I had planned on going to see it and have been watching the non spoiler reviews that people have uploaded the last day . Overall the reviews I've seen are positive but everyone has the SE complaint . The 3rd act is rushed. It leans heavily on social commentary and very little horror . Now I realize everything that first reviewer said turned out to be true. You're absolutely correct. Focusing too much on one aspect of a movie (Especially a horror film) can bring it down as far as fear factor. I remember watching the first candyman as a kid and it scared the fuck out of me! I believe that's because they mostly focused on the horror aspect. Yes, it does have a message within and it was a good message too. Not to say I don't appreciate the politics because as a chicano, I get it. But putting the main focus on politics and leaving the horror aspect in the back seat just throws me off. I'll compare this film to the Nightmare on elm street remake. That movie focused WAY too much on the child molestation stuff and less on Freddy slashing people ( It also didn't help that Robert wasn't Freddy). Where as the original Nightmare on elm street had the child thing as a sub-context but mostly focused on the fear that Freddy brought and showed. Same thing with the original Candyman. The racism stuff was on the side but the movie really did focus on the goriness and the fear that candyman brought and showed. Plus the lack of Tony Todd really upset me. The man is a legend for that character alone! For the positives in my opinion the movie did have excellent cinematography, good casting, I liked the fact that his victims were white because that makes sense for the character, and the fact that the main character is the baby from the first film and bringing back Anne Marie McCoy was cool to see. In conclusion, I agree with your rating and thoughts. They could've done a lot more with Tony's candyman. He's one of my favorite horror icons and definitely deserved more spotlight. Hopefully they'll make another sequel actually showing more Candyman kills than focusing on the politics whilst having that dark tone the first movie had and bring back the fear that Tony Todd brought to us all!

I wasn’t even a fan of the performances, I felt like all the characters were archetypes and empty. Everything about this film just felt on the nose whilst at the same time doing anything really interesting. Even the deaths weren’t satisfying. All we needed was for the legend of what candy man to be continued as the urban legend he is, Candyman has to be the big evil in his film not the social political climate around him. 2 things I will give the film, I loved the puppetry used and I like the cameo at the end in what felt like a set up to a sequel (that I would never watch). I keep coming back to this movie, just rewatched it. Agree completely. Like just more Candyman in general would have been better, buy scarier also. Like when he's in the ceiling mirror in the elevator....it's just not scary. More shadows and music that makes you pull your feet onto the couch. Candyman standing at the end of an isle of books in the library as he's walking to the elevator, just a black silhouette. Shit like that. But I still love the cinematography, the kill scenes, especially the one in the school bathroom was cool as it all happened off camera and in small angled reflections. More of that! Love all the shots of Cabrini outdoors, the empty streets, it was just missing some subtle music again. But yeah lots of missed opportunities too bad. The heavy handed politics/social issues I mean....was this Get Out or Candyman? Could have had the same message with 59% less evil white people.

Yeah, that's true although when he was killed in the bonfire that was the second time he died after being summoned. I'm cool with the new story of him living on through possessing people because they did that with Helen at the end of the first film. I just wished that what we got at the end of the new sequel was him throughout the whole film, because that's who he was in the original. He could fly out of a window, and completely disappear from existence, and then reach through a wall swinging a hook at you hours later lol. it was goofy sometimes but creepy you know. I loved the artistic stuff in the movie but the rest of the movie kinda fell off for me Imo Barely any kills was a huge let down as well Infact I thought the black girl in the trailer was actually the protagonist and I really liked the concept of her just hanging around with friends but then candy man shows up to kill them But it wasn’t the case for me and I was disappointed once again great review

Candyman for me has never been on the same level as a Freddy or a Jason etc. He was above them. Those type of Villains are all Hollywood generated horror commercial type villains where it's very clear who's the bad guy and who's the good guy and the lesson always circles around teens having sex because the virgin always lives. Candyman is very different and above these other villains in that he was born out of tragedy and social injustice. Even as a kid I knew there was a lesson to be learned watching this movie, Candyman wasn't a movie villain, he was a demon a manifestation of evil deeds. For one he didn't need to hide behind a mask or facial deformity and he only came after you if you were dumb enough to say his name. The first Candyman movie was more like a gothic romance with a brutal twist. This newest adaptation feels like a new perspective but kept the core aspects that made Candyman what he is. It felt like the first Candyman was the beginning and the new movies fills in all the blanks over time which accounts for how powerful he is now. I just wish there was more.

I like this film because Anthony’s mother Vanessa Williams from the original movie admit Candyman was behind everything not Helen like they made her and Candyman kid napped her baby Anthony,and Helen saved him,which she got the blame,I also do love the first original then the original sequel farewell to the flesh because you get to know Daniel Robitile and Tony Todd developed that story and how he got the name and his family and how he fell in love with a white woman and got her pregnant and how Caroline had the baby and she was white Isabel,and brought the baby up so no would suspect the truth about it being Candymans baby,she bought his family home he was born into and brought her family up there in New Orleans.👍😃

What I love about this is that, when the first Candyman came out it got a lot of negative reviews because of its heavy social tone with everything going on in Cabrini. A lot of black critics were upset that the film painted black men in a negative light. So it's interesting to see a lot of positive reviews and then ones like this. It seems like this film just as the original will become more iconic over time. Just as the original. A film that is a symbol of the times making it timeless at the end of the day.

Thanks for watching! I definitely liked the movie, I just didn't love it. I really wanted to explore more of the horror figure Candyman, but it seemed that the focus was on displaying the fact that there are much more horrifying things than him in the world. The original in my opinion combined social issues, and the horror of the character seamlessly, and he was most definitely at the forefront.

@@NocturnalCritic they already explained candyman’s backstory in the other sequels. This just a direct sequel from the original. Daniel Robitaille name was revealed in farewell to the flesh candyman. It really didn’t make sense to re-tell the story. Philip glass should of created the score for this movie though like the original candyman
@NocturnalCritic

@@Uniquely_Mario Correct, but I'm not suggesting exploring more character exposition. I'm suggesting exploring more of the horror elements of the character, and the fear aspect when it comes to those who summon him. Basically just more popularizing of the character in his universe, instead of always being centered around the same neighborhood. That's just what I would like to see though, just my opinion.

Candyman 2021 is supposed to take place a decade after the original ⁉. LOL 😂. Well Anthony must be from planet crypton with superman genes or something LOL 😂. Because in part 1, he wasn't just a baby, he was literally an infant. So how is this sequel supposed to be a decade after the original, when you can clearly see that Anthony has to be either in his twenties or thirties according to the way he looks, and also his size 😂⁉. If this sequel is supposed to be a decade later after the first film, that would make Anthony 10 years old or a little older. Someone please help me make sense out of this 😐.

What I'm getting is Jordon Peele took the property and just made a Jordon Peele movie and I think that's why critics like it. Critics like Jordon Peele putting social commentary front and center and they normally don't like Slasher films so they are liking this movie for not being a real CandyMan movie.
@NocturnalCritic
@NocturnalCritic 2 года назад
Sounds like to me you just nailed the reason why I also wasn’t the biggest fan of this version, and ironically I’m a critic. It’s definitely a social commentary with added segments of a slasher film, and certain aspects of the film felt very out of place at times.
@boomstickcritique902
@boomstickcritique902 2 года назад
@@NocturnalCritic I can enjoy social commentary and slasher films however CandyMan was meant to be a slasher movie with the social stuff as just subtext that's what the first did. Critics don't normally like Slasher films at all and prefer the social commentary and that's why they will like this movie because they will feel because it's not trying to be a real slasher movie that it makes the film more intelligent and a higher art form. However, the counter to that is the series is a slasher franchise, and if I'm paying to see a slasher movie do I really want an aiming higher social commentary movie I mean not really. Peele wants to be the Black version of George Romero who also did social commentary but he wants to aim his films only at Black audience doesn't mean white people can't enjoy them but they aren't the intended target. But it would have been better if he just did a new original film with that context instead of just taking already proven property and altering it to fit his personal taste.

We go to movies like this to escape the politics and junk getting thrown at us in the world. We want to get sucked into a fantasy world that is the story of the movie for that 2 hours or less. Why are people trying to bring politics into absolutely everything nowadays? Can we not just sit down and enjoy a great movie? Never mind the fact that the statistics that are public information that can be accessed by anyone do not support the agenda being pushed in this movie or by the mainstream media. Seriously look up for yourself the numbers the past year or two of unarmed people killed by the police separated by race. Don't take my word look it up for yourself. The issue of race has been used for decades to separate people for political gain. Telling people of color an agenda assuming they can't think for themselves is the modern form of slavery in a mental form. How are we still falling for this in 2022?

I think he was absolutely terrifying and his presecene is all throughout. the film also has social statements, not political. Thanks man and I appreciate you watching! I also appreciate your feedback, but I must disagree as well. The character was very limited compared to the original. I think a mirror had to be present for nearly every scene until the very end of the movie. Candyman himself in the original shared traits of a physical being, and a ghostly figure simultaneously. It was almost confusing sometimes to understand which he was, which I enjoyed. This aspect barely exist in the sequel. Also, the topic of public housing and gentrification is very much a part of politics my friend.

TErrible movie. Everyone always speaks of the cinematography adnd Yes some shots looked great, but the movie itself looked cheap. The characters were boring. And what they turned Candyman into is a Damn Shame. Candyman is a regal, gothic, almost classy killer that coming for you if you dont believe. He fucks with your psychological and then frames that person for the murders, but everyone knows who did it. They turned him into a drunk bum avenging wrongs done to black folks. He's not a civil rights killer, none of that. I hated this. His hook was boggish, his attire horrible. This movie was disrespectful. I cared nothing about anyone. 1 out of 10.
