CANDYMAN (2021) IS TERRIBLE & HEAVY HANDED (MOVIE REVIEW) | REEL SHIFT 

I knew it. As soon as I read an article where either the director or writers where talking about “toxic fans” of the original film. When in reality, fans of the original where just wonder where is Tony Todd. Also now every time I hear the name Jordan Peel I know it’s going to be a social justice cringe fest. Because now black celebrities want to get on a soap box with all of their millions and privileges to lecture.

I watched it and saw right through their woke bs. I came out with a bad taste in my mouth and shaking my head. It was very disgusting how bad they tried to cater to the ignorant crowd. I also believe it was an insult to black people as well as the og candyman.

Was a bit odd how all the Chicago cops were white and racist. Also, why were the main characters such gentrified hipsters themselves? What's the social commentary there?

In the original, the story of Daniel had realism in it. However, In the new movie, for Anthony, he just got a bee sting on his hand and that somehow made half of his body turn into a hive?!, and then some white cops just shot him, even though he was laying down on the floor and not even doing anything. That's what i liked about the original, it was more grounded in reality. And this movie just hams in saying "white bad, black good" so many times!? DEAR GOD. and in the original, Candyman literally kills a black girl, Bernadette?! And don't get me started on why Tony Todd was only in the movie for 5 seconds. although i do enjoy the soundtrack and cinematography, this movie is kind of a mess in my opinion.

I remember the directors passionate speach,about how she loves gore and make us look at the horror rather then showing nothing. That the movie was going to be so gory. I wonder what movie she was on about🤣

Oh ok! I see what you mean by heavy handed now. I agree! This is a typical thing in this day in age. Writers are always making things super deep and artistic, and that takes from the entertainment of the movie. I'll just got to an art gallery if that's what I wanted. I mean! I understand movies are symbolism and should have meaning, but these makers are forgetting you don't have to force things for it to be meaningful. We're nature. It will naturally be a message within the movie whether they meant for it to be, or not. An we all have a different perception towards things. They're thinking too hard, and forcing messages on us. Like we aren't aware of racism and how it's utilized in different ways. It's really insulting, the common or backwards things they portay to be complex. Humans aren't stupid. We get it! I just wanted to see something unique and some interesting kills. This movie was terrible! Made no sense, unrealistic, and was boring the whole way through. 😒🥴

I seen it yesterday without looking at reviews cause as a horror, Candyman is one of my favs. I had high hopes. But damn it was so disappointing. I'm actually glad Tony Todd was barely in it. If you last long enough to watch some of the credits, you'll see the girlfriend gets the electric chair. That's right, even in the credits they somehow put race hate in it. And the Candyman they did have in this movie honestly just looked a creepy sexual offender with the way he smiles while giving candy to a young kid. Not the actors fault, it's just how they portrayed him 😕The acting, good. Story was ok if they pushed more realism instead of race. Artists still struggle to make big especially in high places like NY etc and more often than not it takes something big with a particular piece to catch eyes. So you could have had this guy have that problem without race politics. My favourite was the gay brother if youd believe, cause his lines were funny at the best of times. So yeah, gonna just watch the original movies and never watch this again.

Good review! I haven't seen it yet but someone just uploaded the clip of Tony Todd and OMG ... Iwhay an absolute insult. We knew he wasn't going to have .uch screen presence but I thought they would treated his appearance with some level of respect given HE is why we love Candyman so much. HE is Candyman.juat as we would never accept anyone but Robert Englund as Freddy. I agree with you. This movie SUCKS. I have tried to not let anyone else's review influence me but I just can't. Not only does the Tony Todd part make me angry but I cannot believ how overtly political this is. They really do best you over the head with the commentary.. And it's sad. They could've been more sensitive more subtle. But they didn't.. They destroyed the legacy of this movie. Shame on them!

I watched the 1992 original last night, and saw the new one today. original 1992 is far beyond the new one, the 2021 felt like a totally different movie, wasn't scary, the jump scares aren't even that good. the 92 version actually made me jump a few times

This review is the tension release I needed. I basically took every complaint I have and laid them all out perfectly without spoiling the film at all, and I respect that. Candyman 1992 is one of if not the scariest movies I've ever seen. Candyman 2021 didn't have a single scary scene and was making me confused enough to laugh on several occasions.

Candyman 2 handled the themes and ideas as well as the Candyman himself MUCH BETTER than the new film did. That is an underrated sequel to a classic. Plus Candyman 2 was actually good due to Clive Barker's involvement, which is sadly lacking in the third film and this one. He made the original and 2 both work. Also, the music by Phillip Glass was just as good as the first. The location being moved to New Orleans made for some great set-pieces and it further explored the anti-racism messages of the first film. Plus, it further replicated the atmosphere of the original short by Clive Barker. Also, the acting was pretty damn good too, from Tony Todd to others including Kelly Rowan, Bill Nunn, and Veronica Cartwright. The first is still great and the third film sucks too, like the new one.

I saw the movie ... Not worth buying a ticket. Sad, because they had plenty of directions to go. They still could have had a good movie if *execution," was delivered better. They really did take the audience for granite.

I would have loved to see Tody Todd throughout the film. I also would have liked more communication between Anthony & Candyman, like Candyman was with Helen. The Sherman Candyman never spoke.

Saw this a week age my father and I were watching it my father kept getting up and leaving then coming back I was so bored I dosed off 4 times I love the original candyman but I can't say the same for candyman 2021 I really tried to like it but I just couldn't it was boring and lifeless.

Original is a masterpiece. This is a studio driven price of crap just made to capitalize on the success of Get Out and Us. Adds nothing interesting and is just a cash grab.

You can't touch the subject of race without it being polarizing. You can have it as "subtle" as you want. It won't matter. Jordan Peele (the producer) has always put social commentary in his movies. It was just metaphorical. Much of today's audiences require a hammer too

Seriously cannot believe that they have literally possibly started a tend of "ignoring previous sequels to make garbage." LIke does no one remember the days say, Halloween H20, in which the original intention wasn't even to ignore at least Halloween 4 anyway, so they wrote in a son instead of a daughter? New grandma halloween sucks, woke candyman sucks. I do not want to see a crappy effort to make a "real Alien 3" unless Disney has zero involved and it's Fox" "20th century studios" and no wokeness whatsoever, and even then if I don't see Michael Beihn and Ripley being involved and the plot being pretty wild (like they land on a planet, maybe even earth in the vein of firefly/serenity, and essentially find a miserable wasteland of tons of aliens built off of different species. Yes, ik that latter idea would be "reusing" some plot points, but they could run a film that could satisfy what we didn't get after Ressurection, while also not having to pull the lengths they tried with ressurection to make the series not total shit after 3 happened. Also they could go back into space and actually land somewhere peaceful and just give the two a happy ending, where maybe they are able to properly bury Newt (I feel like recasting would just not work now, unless they could find a really good impersonator and get the age right) while revealing Ripley is pregnant, with some narration about being able to "start over" but to show maybe something creepy af like a huge "Deacon" just hanging out somewhere on wherever they settle, as like a "this alien species will never stop plaguing the universe" thing. (but not with a queen, if anything the movie could take cues from action figures about there being a king alien). And yes, ik these ideas are all over and flawed. The pint is that fi your going to pull this "screw the sequels" direction, put in some effort to not just make a sequel that's worse or plays like a greatest hits. Alien especially wouldn't need that because 1/2 of ressurection is 1-2 the other half is is the real insanity (and yes btw, I do find that film underrated, especially when to me, 70% of it's flaws are routed in Alien 3's high levels of stupid).

At one point I shouted out "Wait wait! Where are you going? I was going to make espresso." in the theater. Don't worry, we were two people in the theater.

I was really hoping this sequel would focus more on helen and tony todds candyman only to be disappointed that helen barely had anything to do with the plot and tony todd only having a cameo near the end. Im gonna direct a true direct sequel to candyman someday (even though im white, but the original was directed by a white guy, too)

The 1st half movie seemed like it was only about Troy Cartwright & Grady Smith. How are they going to mess up candyman like that? No hate on anybody, but Troy & Grady did not belong in this movie.

I completely agree with your synapses. And im talking about every point that you touched upon was 100% how i felt. I watched the new one last night and honostly it felt like a propaganda peice. Just like you stated it had good to great acting. And the visual effects towards the end were excelent. It just focused way to much on racism than creating a character connection with the audience to make us want to care about any of the characters other than candyman. I feel like they were using the racism as their "connection" to the audience. In one scene the dialogue mentions a women. But instead of just saying this woman. They say this white woman. Race is always a factor in this movie. Even when it has no point .

You no what i find funny i watch a lot of low budget horror movies from the 70's and 80's and most never single out black people they treat them no different to the other cast members good example Mountain Top Motel, i say low budget because how can Hollywood of all places take a stand on racism it's like a Nazi lecturing people about being kind to everyone.

Candyman as a character ties into a current theme, changing the theme is extremely questionable when you compare the movies side by side. Candyman was a victim of racism, but his motives aren't tied to hating corrupt white people or black injustices, he was in love, couldn't have it and became a vengeful spirit who'd kill anyone for summoning him, man or woman, young or old, white or black, it didn't matter. I'd say he's more of a broken character than a completely evil one, but his actions in the first go against the theme of the 2021 sequel. I believe to a current degree that Candyman can be a symbol of black injustice, but to make him an anti-hero for the black community goes against his character in the original movie since he didn't seem to care about those issues. He was a victim who turned into a villain by racists and the theme could have been that hatred just spreads more hatred, that even black people are willing to kill each other out of hatred which is an issue that gets less focused on nowadays.

All facts and what happened to when people see Candyman their hair turned white and he didn't even have the original trench coat..SMH or the deep voice.. this movie was a joke.. his girlfriend was named Brianna.. then the say my name aspects of the movie.. nah bruh.. that is not what Candyman is about.. the minute the girlfriend called his name.. she would have been dead with the cops..

Think of this as a horror version of how Marvel tried to make Thor as a legacy instead of a name of one person.

Baffles me that this has a 84% on Rotten Tomatoes (while better films like Halloween Kills have such low scores for otherwise minor issues), such a poorly written mess of a film that felt like it was only made to push an agenda and piggyback off of Halloween 2018's "requel" success. It's a damn shame Nia's attention to detail with cinematography and set design is wasted on a heavy handed message that gets shoved down your throat throughout the film's barebones 90 minute runtime and a complete lack of scares, destruction of Candyman's character by turning him into this "hero" that you can use as a weapon, a godawful third act with poor pacing and a terrible ending that leaves a bad taste in your mouth and makes you wonder how on earth critics thought this film was fantastic. I'll take Halloween Kills' flawed but otherwise fluent and understandable dialogue over whatever the fuck message they were trying to present here.

Why did they even make this movie? Tony Todd was amazing in the first one. I had night nightmares for a week after seeing the first one years ago. I don't know what this trash is.

Funny story. I just watched the movie and it was repulsive 🤮. I accidentally purchased it on RU-vid without paying attention to the fact that it was UHD and could not get it to play on my phone. Then I went to Apple TV and payed again and was extremely disappointed. It was just as my so often ignored instincts told me it would be. A load of woke bull$h!t that was not scary or interesting. Social commentary being inserted into a movie tactfully is like saying countless minorities being murdered in real life should be done tactfully. People think social issues in movies are "Heavy Handed"...well people being murdered for being a darker skin color is also quite heavy handed. The only thing wrong with Candyman 2021 is that much of the film was left on the cutting room floor. Helen originally played a much bigger role in this film, and you could tell by how fast the movie ended, many scenes didn't make the theatrical cut, so Burke going mad in the end kind of came out of nowhere. The issues of gentrification and generally how Black People are treated are perfectly suited for a film like this, but no matter how its treated in a film, there's always going to be someone who says it was "Heavy Handed". If everything were reversed and corrupt cops were murdering white people...I wonder what people would be saying then...

I know you can't relate 😒 so the message goes over head, I guess you also seem to miss the fact that in the 1992 version of the Candyman they were also talking about racial Injustice social commentary of gentrification. Woke has become its own religion. These modern virtue signaling movies are really similar to Christian or other faith-based films in that the movie is about the message first and the entertainment value second. In most Christian movies, particularly stuff from Pureflix, it really doesn't matter if the acting is mediocre, the writing hokey, or the direction uninspired. If the message is strong and morally sound, the movie has succeeded. Even as a Christian, there's a reason why I don't watch these movies: they are thinly veiled sermons where the only aspect of the film they really focused any of their efforts is the Christian message. But if I wanted the message, I'd go to church, watch an online church service, or just read the Bible. Movies like Candyman are exactly that but for virtue signalers.

I have a point to make, aside from the blm stuff, you know who the most terrible and obsessive characters were, the black people. It's not woke like people are saying it is. I think people blew it out of proportion. I also wasn't a huge fan of this and I like the original 100x more.

Well, yeah, it's Jordan Peele. Every single project proves more that Key was the talent in that duo. Can't stand Peele. He should team up with Spike Lee and make a super unwatchable movie. Jordan turned Twilight Zone into a SJW nightmare. Why wouldn't her do that with this? (Yeah, Peele isn't as smart as he wants to be.) I always think of that old Candyman song. 😄 Never cared for Candyman either. I do like Tony Todd though. Maybe Mike Myers will be a white savior next and rescue Laurie from...Idk.
