I'm liking the fact that Anthony is almost like Helen. No knowledge of the hood but become obsessed with a urban legend. Daniel Robitaille was a painter. The son of a freed slave that was killed by a white mob, so it makes sense

For me, the scariest thing about this film is the fact that Anthony had no chance of escaping his fate. Candyman had come for him from the beginning, to finish what he started all those years ago; it was inevitable for Anthony, and he just accepts it at the end.

I still feel like they didn’t rely on this enough. The whole movie could’ve been centered around that concept and made Candyman a little more shadowy and more of a ghost than whatever that was they decided. Lol. Ann Marie was light fan service when they could’ve flashed back to Anthony’s childhood and given us more. This was one of the more underwhelming reimaginings I’ve seen, and it hurts to say that.

I have a weird theory I just want to throw out there. I think Anthony has been posessed by Candyman as soon as he was fed the honey as a baby . But wasnt truly awoken in him until the bee sting . Potential spoilers This movie feels like it was rewritten or refilmed halfway through production. The first half was interesting and it seemed as if the main character was using the urban legend for personal gain and having a moral corruption rather than being part of some predetermined legacy. The majority of victims (besides the cops) were not oppressors, but rather minor antagonists to Anthony. The movie frames Candyman as almost a necessary evil against injustice in the end rather than a malevolent consequence of injustice. He kills regardless of race or innocence. I hated the last line “Tell everyone” Why? Candyman isn’t supposed to be a hood genie that can be summoned when in need of him. That’s a cool concept, but it ain’t Candyman. A lot of dialogue and plot developments seemed so off, the movie was not cohesive at all.

Although I appreciate the social commentary in the film , I really don’t think the writers understood that the first film was more of a psychological horror slasher placing the audience into a mind war to decide rather it was the actual ghost (Candyman) committing these murders or was it Helen seeing as though she had become completely obsessed with the legend…Even at the end of the first Candyman , it left my mind wondering was it Helen all along even Candyman whispered to her “it was always you Helen”.. I kinda wish they would of stuck to that formula rather than focusing so hard on the social commentary aspect

I had the luxury of obtaining an early script draft of CANDYMAN (2021). It's from 2018 to let you know, and while it's also short (89 pages), it's WAAAY better than the movie and I'm stunned at how much was changed. The Anthony, Brianna, and Anne-Marie characters are the only people who are carried over into the final movie. Everyone else is different. You still have the storyline of Anthony and Brianna being artists. Anne-Marie had a few more scenes and appears much earlier than in the finished film. A notable difference is that Helen Lyle is put to much more use here. Anthony grows obsessed with her and accidentally summons her and when she first appears to help when he's being beaten up by drunken college dudes, we assume it's Candyman because of how she "appears like him". But when Anthony is in the police station being accused of trying to murder his mom, Helen reveals herself to him. She's the "Candyman" of the story for the most part which is what I'd expect a DIRECT SEQUEL TO THE ORIGINAL to be like given how it ended with Helen being the new legend of Cabrini-Green. The ending is mostly the same. Brianna is captured and she is taken into the police car and she calls out the Candyman who comes to her rescue. But there is an epilogue scene between her and Anne-Marie that occurs the following day that closes out the movie rather fine, but it's a bit lackluster because Anthony isn't mentioned at all which was odd. Just "how are things" and Brianna deciding to close her gallery, yada yada. Disappointed how much has changed for the WORSE when they had something really good. If anyone wants a copy, email me at devontehuntley2@gmail.com.

Helen not being the killer is my problem with every Candyman sequel. That sounds so much more interesting than what’s in here. @devontehuntley6274
@devontehuntley6274 2 года назад
@@jalenjohnson1662 I don't mind the sequels route continuing Candyman because they did leave the Chicago area and focused on his family bloodline that would grow obsessed with him, and it wasn't like that death in the first movie was even permanent so he could come back from that. THIS movie however, definitely should have made usage for Helen since it was back in the original area where she has strong ties to. Anthony I feel was sort of better in the script. It was nothing out of this world crazy from the movie version. I think the actor did fine for the material he had and fitted the role fine and he was still written good, so I have no issues with the onscreen display of the role. The script just had more fleshing out for him, as they tend to anyway.

Was it some random Karen off screen lol!!!! That was apart of the many plot holes in this movie! And no one notice about Anthony's rotted hand after the bee stung? The lecturing instead of horror was too much and making most of the black characters a straight up plot armor, made this movie predictable and pointless as hell! i think the art criticism stuff was trying to give two valid perspectives on the situation (gentrification of culture vs. creation of culture) while also criticizing the industry (ultimately cares about $ and thusly sensationalism). but the movie ultimately doesn't do anything with these points and just kind of drops them (maybe it did and i missed it: some parallel in the creation/continuing of the candyman mythos???). and then they made the blm stuff really awkward and so heavy handed, but maybe some people need it spelled out that plainly. either way the 3rd act was a carny show and the the 2nd half had way too many off screen kills. as soon as the elevator scene happened, the movie just wasn't scary anymore. i can only imagine that this movie got chopped up and reshot a bunch -- but who knows if it did. completely agree with martin: for all of the dialogue these characters were so thin.

Spoilers and my general thoughts . The original was a better film , yet still flawed the 1992 version felt as if Tony Todd's candyman had a better motivation to make an example out of Helens life because she never believed in him , in the 1992 version it isn't addressed in the film but the reason why candyman becomes attached to Helen is because she resembles what his girlfriend looked like back in the day , this 2021 adaptation couldn't of opened any better with the first 10 minutes hidden subtext opposition with a character and the ambient reverse tracking shot going through the city it gives you the impression that the film will be great .. this film forgot that not only is candyman paranormal he's also psychological this whole thing with the new candyman sherman missed the mark completely , keep the opening exactly the same but when laundromat man tells the story of cabrini green as a kid he was petrified of the candyman and thought he was genuinely real because of all the violence that plauged his area turns out that sherman had a mental condition from the perspective of laundromat kid he thinks its the real candyman at the same time we see the cops running to the kids screams we see shermans guardians/parents also trying to look for him , but it's too late sherman is shot in cold blood , and ever since then laundromat guy feels guilt and responsible for shermans death , we don't know whether or not the police was looking for Anthony since he was their during all the murders the police just randomly show up at the end , didn't know how to feel when the film perpetuated that their are multiple candyman when in my eyes their is only one candyman and that's the 1992 excellent performance from Tony Todd I wasn't happy to see that he wasnt utilised in the film better , the laundromat guys motives were so out of blue when come to the last 15- 20 minutes of the film it didn't feel fleshed out especially with what he decides to do with Anthony it's too heavy handed with its social commentary that it doesn't have enough thought behind its message to pay off , the cops were only corrupt to serve purpose to the plot , yeah they can be corrupt , I'm not beyond the idea that some people are assholes but for me to be on board with that the audience needs to spend time with these characters to learn the error of their ways , im hearing that their is a possible 40 minutes that was cut from the film , who knows maybe the additional scenes makes the entire story feel more cohesive

You’re right. There’s even the question of whether Candyman is even a real entity. He’s the boogeyman they use to explain away all of the worst shit that happens in the projects (and to an extent, broader Chicago). In every instance of murder in the first movie there’s a potential real world explanation for what happened. The woman in the Ted Raimi story could’ve been butchered by her jealous boyfriend, Helen could’ve actually been the murderer of all of the people in the main story, Trevor’s new girlfriend could’ve been the one who murdered him at the end. In each case there’s a visual implication and a motive present for the real person, not some ghostly spectre. But whether he’s a real ghost or just a coping mechanism for the real world, it doesn’t matter. He “exists” in the stories told about him. He’s neither hero nor villain, he’s the face of suffering.

Daniel robatie represents the creative/ the legend that is the writing on the wall, the whisper in the classroom, with out these things, he is nothing, and when forgotten, will rise to the surface, usually in the form of a self for filling prophecy, this this case, a man obsessed with a dying legend. So no its not about race or vengence or racial justice.

Honestly for me, I really enjoyed this movie. And I want to say it's mainly because I don't like many modern horror movies, because I always feel it's the same story over and over again. So this one felt nice and fresh to me, there weren't many jumpscares, I was terrified more of the atmosphere than anything. The ending was okay for me without spoiling. Could have been better? Maybe but the same time I wasn't really disappointed either. But for those who haven't watched the movie yet, I definitely recommend it. This is coming from a guy who hasn't seen the first original movie, but this movie makes me want to watch the first one.

@@CynicallyObnoxious I don't think so. Like from what I'm hearing from a lot of my favorite critics, they all share the same opinion. And I have been wanting to watch it again after really enjoying the movie the first time, but I am aware that that's more of just a adrenaline kicking in as I haven't been in the movies in so long. But yeah, I feel like if I watch the first one, even if I find the first one to be way better than this one I don't think it would dissuade me from watching this new one again.

I think the movie is pretty straight forward. They give you purpose with the characters that matter, the expansion of the lore, which in-turn gives you reason to why Candyman picks his targets. There’s one scene that needs explanation to me but other than that it worked .

Hollywood focuses on gender and racial representation because it doesn't affect their bottom line. But they won't give you a movie that expresses the true lives of everyday people, because the film industry is a rich-person's playground, no poors allowed. They're all about putting black people on screen, as long as they get to be rich black people, written and directed and starring rich black people. But they won't upset the power structure of the wealthy telling the poors what constitutes acceptable representation. They need the privileged black folk to hopefully inspire the working black folk to work harder within the system rather than tearing it down.

I thought the beat shots put into the film are the low angle, flipped shots of Chicago at the opening credits, its a great contrast from the opening credits in the first movie, the music and atmosphere of the 2021 opening immediately set the tone for this movie, I personally thought that the film was made very well, the third act couldve had some adjustments but the script, the cinematography and the hidden sightings of candyman put together made such a special movie for people to indulge in

So good am I right?! I never seen devil before, never really made time for shamylan movies except for the unbreakable trilogy but I do wanna bring up one scene from candyman that no one seems to talk about and thats the mirror scene between Sherman and anthony in the art dealers hallway, as the music swells I found myself gripping my nails to the char arms in the theatre, I immediately knew Yahya Abdul Mannteen II was an amazing actor, no dialogue whatsoever, all facial expressions and you can see anthony's fear and disgust at the sight of Sherman and the scene ending in the way *** died just stole the show, the whole sequence plays out like a short film and I can guarantee if this movie was never released except for this scene, it would still leave an impact on the viewer after watching it.

@5:22 thank you for going back to that! 🤣 It stinks that wasn’t in the movie, Brianna’s scream find the dead bodies at the art exhibit, and her yelling of Candyman from the trailer I was really hoping that bathroom scene would’ve been the opening to set the mood Saw the movie earlier tonight! Feels so short But they waste no time getting to the nitty gritty of it all I'm very happy with they expand further with the mythology but also paying respect to the 1992 original The scares are good, the cinematography is appropriately moody, the haunting score, the blood, and many of the underlying racial themes mixed with the current social commentary work extremely well Given everything that's happened with the Black Lives Matter movement it's refreshing to have Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele tackle some social issues with violence, police brutality, gentrification, and unjust killings People murdered either become heroes or vilified When it comes to black cinema it's more drama-based with historical figures conveying their messages yet with the horror genre it serves as a conduit for the Black experience and its duality It can be hopeful and life-changing but also sad and unfair and painful The monsters in cinema help us see the true terrors of life Happy they bright back Vanessa Williams and Tony Todd even if it was just the last frame Overall just as good as the first movie it not better

@Hamburger Stalker wht people set up the blk on blk crime, as?far back as when they first went to Africa, "they" always pitted tribes against each other this is no different. They purposely neglected these areas, have all these people live on top of each other, PUSH DRUGS INTO THOSE NEIGHBORHOODS, then purposely BLOCK THEM FROM JOBS FOR DECADES, giving all the jobs to the people WHO RAN AWAY FROM THE CITIES with those wht only affirmative action workers unions, and you expect that powderkeg they created not to explode? I watched this when it came out and thought it was... ok. After rewatching it, I think it's just a boring movie and a total missed opportunity. The main character is a block of wood, it took way too long to get going and the best part was the end credits. The puppet stories during the credits opened the door for WAY more for the Candyman lore. End credits... 10/10. Movie... 3/10.

As a horror fan I was hyped for the film, I remember watching candyman as a teenager at my aunties in middle of now where in England I generally like the film but I have a few issues, for starters tony Todd should of been in this film Also I felt the story of racism is too current year and gonna age like full fat milk. I perfectly understand racism context is the thread of the short story and 1st film but I perfer the original back story to candyman. I think they could of done a much better film with the original story. At times I felt it almost wanted to start finger wagging to the viewers. Over all I think it a really good but with flaws, I really hope to see what they do next
