Your disbelief destroyed the faith of my congregation. Without them, I am nothing. So I was obliged to come. Tony Todd brought a true atmosphere to African American cultural urban legends, no way would Eddie Murphy be able to pull this off. I saw his film, "Vampire In Brooklyn" and though I enjoyed it, the horror/thriller aspect of it was somewhat disappointing.
@Kylopod
@Kylopod 2 года назад
It’s easy to suggest Murphy couldn’t have done this, as Todd was excellent in the role and we have the example of Vampire in Brooklyn (which I haven’t seen, I’m just commenting on its reputation) for how Murphy could fail at horror. But I also know there’s a long history of comedians being underestimated as they transition into more serious roles (the whole view of comedy as being a lesser art form is condescending and unfair), and that gives me a little pause into trying to judge this hypothetical casting that never happened.

I think that what happened to him gets overlooked or downplayed as it pertains to how this character is the way he is. The man was lynched when he was alive. Judging from actual accounts of lynchings, that is just about the most violent, brutal, and evil way to go out. A being or a being's spirit that is created or warped from such an act probably would turn out like that. I think it would have also been understandable to have him more of a spirit of vengeance than someone that just messes up everyone and anyone; that way people could even better understand the character and sympathize for what was done to him.

I think I enjoy this movie about as much as Chris does, I think it's absolutely one of the horror staples of the 90's and one of the film's I think represent the genre as a whole. I'm not arguing Korey's point against black representation in this movie being inadequate for his liking, however I thought the fact Candyman was this otherworldly creature like Freddy who was also a black man, created from the injustices of real world history, felt very different to me. You could also see how this puts the viewer in a moral predicament of sympathizing with Candyman despite how brutal and unforgiving he is as an entity. For as many silly parts there are to this, and supernatural elements, there's a lot that is down to earth and relatable for a lot of people. I can see what he is saying about this movie not being the scariest, but I don't think that's what makes this movie iconic. The visuals and music, the art direction of this movie as a whole and the different choices made with shots and iconography is something I've remembered since my first viewing. It's not perfect, but damn is this a good horror movie.

I can understand some of the criticism about the depiction of young black men in this film. But I would struggle to figure out how they could be portrayed differently. The director Bernard Rose worked very closely on the script with NAACP and other organisations to make the intimidating characters feared not because of their colour. The other characters he hoped would be more rounded and less like ciphers or caricatures. Pretty certain the remake/reboot will have a very different tone, for better or worse. *as a after thought, the bonfire is probably a left over from when the original story which was set in England. We build bonfires every November 5th and celebrate burning the catholic 'traitor' Guy Faukes. From a storytelling perspective It is usually a good way to bring the community together in one place for a cool looking finale.

She tried to make dinner for them, but she couldn’t even cook. She was taking raw meat and lettuce leaves and throwing them into a bowl 🤣✋

Clive Barker - Always and Forever - and if you look into why he wrote it - it's deep. Jordan Peele has said over and over he has kept Clive in the loop. I am being real - I love Jordan Peele - but I have always loved Clive - - I will go to the theatre to support the new Candyman. But the first one is first and this is the child's story.. the continuation. I am so excited for the new film.

Sorry I'm gonna be the Candyman dork here, forgive my essay. I just love this flick and tbh I'm a little stoned. Regarding the little kid and the Bonfire: The little kid is not an agent of Candyman. He's just a little kid who's probably homeless or at least in very dire living conditions as we see. The movie's racial themes give it depth, but the grand idea of the movie is the power of "ideas". In essence, life is so fucked up in Cabrini Green that they create legends like "Candyman" as a sort of coping mechanism. It's easier to deal with the tragedy of everyday life there if they attribute it to some boogeyman type figure. Whether Candyman really haunts Helen or whether she's nuts, he still represents the myth that the people of Cabrini Green have created. He doesn't appear to her until she's disproved his existence and his actions are intended to keep the myth alive. Real or a delusion, he has "life" in the stories people tell about him. Helen being a part of that (whether she's imagining it or it's a real ghost) is a way to add to the myth of Candyman and invalidate any work she's done to disprove his existence. In every instance of a murder in this movie, there's an equally plausible "a real person did it" explanation and that is at least visually implied. The idea being that people are attributing real murders to the legend. This includes the murder story with Ted Raimi and the murder of Helen's husband at the end. The kid is a way to show that with relative innocence. The kid, moreso than many adults, would be susceptible to believing that Candyman is a real ghost. He attributes the crimes of a real criminal using the Candyman motif (the one who assaults Helen in the bathroom) to the boogeyman/ghost santa claus figure of the Candyman urban legend. The cops know he's guilty of a lot of crime in the community; including the assault on the disabled kid in that same bathroom (which, I dunno about you, but that story gets to me every time I watch this movie) and murdering that one woman in her apartment. That's why the cop is so pleased with her in their first encounter and so pissed and cruel to her when she's suspected of kidnapping the baby/murdering the dog. At first, she's an innocent white girl from a rich neighborhood, meaning her testimony will get this guy locked up because there will be enough of a stink about it. Then he's pissed because she's ruined the validity of her testimony with the dog/baby thing. And because her testimony is ruined, that guy gets to keep wandering the streets (and people will continue to attribute his crimes to Candyman). The bonfire is either something they were all going to burn later for a celebration or just a big pile of garbage. The kid thinks he sees Candyman enter the pile of garbage. He doesn't see Helen, he sees a hand and a hook and thinks it's really Candyman the ghost. So he and his friends go to burn it, and the people around get involved as well just as a communal thing. They all have absolutely no idea that Helen or the baby are in there. Then in the end, it's just another horrible thing that happened in Cabrini Green that gets added to the myth of Candyman. Whether Candyman was real or a delusion of Helen's warped mind, he accomplished what he wanted: the Candyman legend gets to keep on living. Notice how Candyman never tries to woo her with any legitimate romantic gesture. He asks her to "Be my victim" and tries to seduce her with the idea of "living forever" as a "whisper in the classroom" or "a tale to make lovers cling close together". His goal is to continue existing ultimately. Whether he's a real ghost or a manifestation of Helen's guilt or something, his simping for Helen is just how he intends to add her to the story.

@DuelaDent52
@DuelaDent52 2 года назад
The way I saw things, the Candyman’s backstory, how he came to be, who he was in life, don’t strictly matter. What matters is who he is now. What matters is that people talk about him, that people know his name, that they know some variation of how he came to be. He is the writing on the wall, the whisper in the classroom, the hesitancy to commit to saying his name five times in the mirror. Either way, people believe in him. Without these things he is nothing. And that’s why he goes after Helen. I don’t think Candyman ever really factored into the inciting murder at Cabrini Greene; as we see when Helen is assaulted in the bathroom, someone was essentially using the legend as a street gimmick. That’s why he didn’t immediately appear to Helen even though she said his name five times in the mirror: he still had his congregation of believers and his legend was firmly secure. But when Helen went to expose the murder and testify against the gang, that legend is threatened. Suddenly, there’s a rational explanation behind everything. Suddenly, Candyman isn’t so scary when he’s behind bars. She doubted him, so for the first time in a long while, he must shed innocent blood personally. It was always Helen. He’s going to sacrifice her to get people talking and stay fearful. Did you hear about the lady who went mad and went on a killing spree after looking into the Candyman legend? I hear she’s the reincarnation of his long lost lover. Whatever the reason, he literally plans to burn her as fuel for his fire. She becomes yet another notch on his belt. Be his victim and achieve immortality in his legend, whether that be as his over or as his victim. But in the end, Helen turns his legend against him by fighting back and saving both the baby and the community. Now all the stories over in Cabrini Greene are about her. They’re talking about the woman who went up against the Candyman and won. The woman who saved Cabrini-Greene from the Candyman’s reign of terror. The woman who got horribly mutilated in the fire. And if you say her name five times in the mirror, she’ll come after you. She has supplanted the Candyman legend, turning *him* into part of *her* story. Candyman is now part of her mythos, that’s her who they’ll be making graffiti of. And I think the 2021 movie may be going in the direction of Candyman as a living urban legend over Candyman as the vengeful spirit of an innocent man. I hear Candyman was the son of a slave who made a fortune off his art, but he was brutally murdered by his lover’s father after she fell pregnant with his child. I hear he was a dude who gave candy to the children who got lynched after being framed for putting razor blades in the candy. How he got the hook, why he’s associated with bees, who he really was in life, all these are lost to time. But that doesn’t matter if the finer details are wrong, because people are still ultimately talking about him as if he were real, and their knowledge and fear to dig any deeper into things gives him power (there’s probably some racial commentary there, but I feel I’m not qualified to discuss that). And all these years later, he’s still trying to use little baby Anthony to grow and ultimately assimilate him into his legend. Gosh, I love this movie.

No, 'Candyman' is not overhyped. "The pain, I can assure you, will be exquisite. As for our deaths, there is nothing to fear. Our names will be written on a thousand walls. Our crimes told and retold by our faithful believers. We shall die together in front of their very eyes and give them something to be haunted by. Come with me and be immortal." The bees were bred specifically for this movie. They needed to make sure that the bees were only twelve hours old, so that they looked like mature bees, but their stinger wouldn't be powerful enough to do any real damage. Exterior, hallway, and stairway scenes were actually filmed for a few days in the infamous Cabrini-Green housing projects, though the producers had to make a deal with the ruling gang members to put them in the movie as extras to ensure the cast and crew's safety during filming. Even with this arrangement, a sniper put a bullet through the production van on the last day of filming, though no one was injured. While investigating one of Candyman's crime scenes, Helen and Bernadette discover that the design of the apartment's medicine cabinet made it a possible point of entry for an intruder. This was not a made-up piece of horror movie fiction. While researching the film, Bernard Rose learned that a series of murders had been committed in Chicago in this very way. In Slashers Part 1 (2018), Tony Todd said he was stung by bees 26 times during the space of the Candyman trilogy. Tony Todd negotiated a bonus of $1,000 for every bee sting he suffered during filming; he was stung 23 times. Tony Todd's favorite role and movie of his own. Whenever Candyman is walking his footsteps have no sound, signifying his status as rumor and mythology powered by superstition come to life. The Candyman's lair was designed to look like a gothic church constructed by the people who believed in him living in Cabrini Green The film's opening credits feature a great aerial view of Chicago, which was pretty revolutionary for its time. "We did that with an incredible new machine called the Skycam, which can shoot up to a 500mm lens with no vibration," Bernard Rose told The Independent. "You've never seen that shot before, at least not done that smoothly." The Candyman in Clive Barker's original story had been described as an imposing possibly white man (he is described as having a rather unnatural shade of yellow that of course adds to his candy theme) with an unruly red beard. Director Bernard Rose had Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd take ballroom dancing classes together so they would have more of a romantic connection when playing their characters. Candyman combines elements of two real urban legends: Bloody Mary (a ghost who appears by chanting her name in a mirror) and the Hook (a killer with a hook for a hand who attacks a couple in a parked car). The effects crew had a blacksmith make Candyman's hook, but when they went to pick it up, the blacksmith refused to sell it to them. Once he'd heard it was for a Clive Barker horror movie, the devout Christian blacksmith had misgivings about the project. There was some controversy that the film was depicting racism and racial stereotypes. According to Bernard Rose, "I had to go and have a whole set of meetings with the NAACP, because the producers were so worried, and what they said to me when they'd read the script was 'Why are we even having this meeting? You know, this is just good fun.' Their argument was 'Why shouldn't a black actor be a ghost? Why shouldn't a black actor play Freddy Krueger or Hannibal Lecter? If you're saying that they can't be, it's really perverse. This is a horror movie. . .'" According to Virginia Madsen , "I was and am now worried about how people will respond. I don't think Spike Lee will like this film." It took half an hour for all of the bees to get into Tony Todd's mouth, and he recalled being "tranced out" when he let all of the bees out of his mouth. Eddie Murphy was considered for the title role, but was deemed too short at 5'9". They chose Tony Todd for his height at 6'5". For the scene where Helen strips in front of the policewoman, Virginia Madsen suggested her lifelong best friend Rusty Schwimmer for the part as she felt more comfortable doing it in front of a familiar face. For the scene in which bees fill Candyman's chest cavity, bees were placed in a special body appliance which was filled off stage and strapped to Tony Todd's chest. Utmost care was taken to be gentle in placing the bees properly for the scene and then collecting them afterwards. In an August 2011 interview with Cindy Pearlman of the Chicago Sun Times Tony Todd stated, "I'll never forget that I filmed that movie in a building on the South Side of Chicago. Building 116. Unit C. That's the Candyman pad!" Bernard Rose expressed interest in Clive Barker's story "The Forbidden", and Barker agreed to license the rights. Where Barker's story revolved around themes of the British class system in contemporary Liverpool, Rose chose to refit the story to Cabrini-Green public housing development in Chicago and instead focus on themes of race and social class in inner-city United States. The original story takes place in a fictional British housing project called Bob's Corner in the late 70's, while the movie moves the setting to 90's Chicago and the real life slum of Cabrini Green. The change in setting also makes the bonfire seem out of place, as in the original the bonfire is part of the traditional Guy Fawkes Night celebrations. Tony Todd compares his character's ability to invoke fear, suggestion and seduction to the DC Comics villain Scarecrow. He also compares his character to the Phantom of the Opera and the Hunchback of Notre Dame in that they are all "monsters" who use both tenderness and terror in an unsuccessful attempt to win the love of the female protagonists. The honeybees in Candyman were controlled by Norman Gary, who previously handled bees on films such as The Deadly Bees (1966), My Girl (1991), and Fried Green Tomatoes (1991). The film used more than 200,000 real honeybees throughout, and most of the crew wore bodysuits to be protected from stings, although all of them faced at least one sting. Originally scripted Candyman's name was to be called 13 times, but writer and director Bernard Rose reduced it to 5. Clive Barker's short story took place in Liverpool, England. The titular character of Candyman does not appear in person until 44 minutes into the movie. The only slasher movie in the horror canon with a Black serial killer as the villain. This has never been done before or since in the history of film. In "Draculas, Vampires and Other Undead Forms: Essays on Gender, Race and Culture", the Candyman's nature is likened to a vampire, elaborating that similar to the vampires: "[Candyman] possesses the capacity to hypnotize his prey such that they appear to desire their victimizations." Virginia Madsen confirmed that the Candyman was intended to be an "African-American Dracula", adding that she thought that it is "appealing to the African-American community because they finally had their own Dracula". For a scene in which both Helen and Candyman are covered with bees, the queen bee scent was placed on the actors and then the bees were placed on the actors by pouring them out of a container. A special bee vacuum was used after to collect the bees. Bernard Rose's then-wife, Alexandra Pigg, was originally set to play Helen but ceded the role to the higher profile Virginia Madsen. In "The Forbidden", Helen's last name is Buchanan as opposed to Lyle in the movie. Anne-Marie's last name is changed from Latimer to McCoy in the movie, as well as her baby's name from Kerry to Anthony. Candyman is regarded in some critical circles as a contemporary classic of horror cinema. Michael Culkin's debut film Penned by Clive Barker who also wrote Hellraiser, another iconic horror franchise. The scene where Candyman's hook bursts through Helen's bathroom cabinet was set up without Virginia Madsen's knowledge, so her terror and shock are real. She ran screaming from the set. According to Tony Todd, the studio cut several minutes of footage out to the swirling embrace scene at the end of the film when Candyman tells Helen "Surrender to me" because they were leery of the interracial context of the scene. When Helen is seen talking to Jake at Cabrini-Green you can see the shadow of the gates on her face resembling honeycombs therefore forshawdowing that her face will be covered in bees. Dr Burke's death won the "Golden Chainsaw" award because it had the most visible hookage. Kasi Lemmons's second horror film after The Silence of the Lambs (1991) (in which she played a similar sidekick role), and the first in which she dies when she gets gutted by Candyman. Helen and Bernadette, before they unwittingly summon Candyman, make a joke about how someone's lurking behind a bathroom mirror. In the second act of the movie Candyman himself later smashes through the mirror to get at Helen.

Bernard Rose came up with the idea of putting her under because her reaction to seeing Candyman was crucial and he didn't want her to scream he literally called it a "f***horrible noise" lol ( he's not wrong) Virginia was very skeptical about hypnotism until During a session she realized mid conversation that her arm was raised above her head . She was convinced she was hypnotized and agreed to be put under during the filming .of the movie. Bernard Rose was given a trigger word to put her under when needed. However after a full day of shooting and being put under .she became very disoriented she had to stop Side note. Speaking as someone who has been hypnotized myself I can tell you watching her in those scenes . It's legit she really was put under.

the cabrini green projects were a very rough area. you go down there you wont find alot of people being friendly, especially to someone snooping around. it was gangster disciple territory, one of the most violent gangs in america. notice those guys wearing purple when she wants to go in.

They had cops and security in force for a lot of the filming

@@erikwilliams1562 yeah i mean, im talking about cory having a problem with how the black guys in cabrini were portrayed. they weren't all angels over there!

@@RapperThatDraws He didn’t have a problem with them being portrayed as gangster he had a problem with them only being portrayed as gangsters. I’m sure there was plenty of men just living life and trying to get by out there.

@@jamal7071 thats true, they could of thrown some nicer guys in there. but then would we get a pointless scene of some nice guy for no reason? i mean look, if they took one of the white people in the movie that had a role and made him a black guy, im all for that. like lets say ted raime's character in the beginning. as long as it has a purpose to the plot and story, im all for it. but to just have some pointless scene of a black guy being nice for no reason im against that

@@RapperThatDraws Yeah I never really cared. I knew what they were going for in the movie and never got offended. I was just explaining what Kory meant. But I agree there was no need for a scene just to show a “nice” black guy.

Last 3rd of the movie is 🔥🔥🔥. Helen escaping the asylum Candyman busting her out The tire fire/baby and helen. As a Black kid in the pj's this hit me hard.. The theory of candyman being a myth and not a "living" thing is interesting....

Happy 30th! On rewatch I notice the kid tells Helen about annual bonfires & as I wrote last year, he only saw the hook move in the pile and thought candyman so he told the neighborhood

The kid at the end only saw the hook Helen was holding and climbing into the pile with. He thought it was Candyman himself. He even says so when he calls everyone over. They light it thinking they're destroying Candyman, not Helen

Korey wanna know was Cabrini that bad? Absolutely!!! I'm a Chicagoan and it was a horror movie itself with the gang violence. The movie exaggerated it a bit but it was a terrible place to live
