The Candyman has just such a tragic story behind him, and im super glad that they are using that to their advantage, to bring a sense of melancholy to the film, that adds to the horror.

Is this animated version the same movie as the actual Candyman trailer that came out a few months ago? Just wanted to sort that out. One trailer is animated and the other is not. I'm a big fan of the old-school Candyman movies. Thanks.
@@dqreps This is for the new Candyman coming out, but beyond the Candyman teaser, it is also showing historically famous deaths of black people in America.
I like how they're now leaning for sure into Candyman's urban legend nature by displaying multiple backstories (and finishing with his classic one involving the mixed-race romance) in this video reflecting the different manners prejudice has shown itself in the US. Very good stuff. And of course that beautiful soundtrack!
I am glad you pointed this out, because at first I thought they retconned his story by making him an actual candy man. Which, now that I know, is such an obvious red herring.
There is maybe one or two additional things here that are part of Candyman, but at least two of these are real life deaths: George Stinney, Jr. was a 14 year old boy who was executed in the electric chair in 1944 in South Carolina after being accused of killing two white girls. James Byrd Jr. was killed in 1998 in Texas after being dragged by three white supremacists for nearly three miles.

Powerful. There's so much to unpack here. The fact that Stinney and Byrd's deaths were both so horrifically based in racism, yet separated by over 50 years. How indistinguishable the created back stories and the real life deaths here are from one another. I'm fascinated with how this film will expand on the original.

The third story of the young boy getting the death penalty was George Stinney, who was executed in 1944 for supposedly killing two young white girls (ages 7 and 11 respectively). There was no substantial evidence that he did this, however. The only evidence they had was a supposed confession from him. That’s it. It’s disgusting and horrifying. Some trivia: His story loosely inspired the character of John Coffey in Stephen King’s The Green Mile. I’m not sure if the other two stories shown before Candyman’s origin are based around real stories like George Stinney. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were, though.
SPOILER: in the last scene when we see his reflection in the car windows we actually see different people, different incarnations of the candyman, and one of them I'm sure was of George.
the saddest part of it is that the cops made him starve as a form of torture to get him to confess to a crime he didn't commit. and in the end he was wrongfully sentenced by an ALL white court, including the Judge.

not 100% sure, but the 2nd and 3rd stories look all too similar to the murders of James Byrd Jr and George Stinney. Whatever direction they’ve decided to take this movie, it sure looks interesting.

I have to think this was beautifuly very haunting and a very bold and brave statement that essentially sums up Candyman by bringing these other tragic individuals to light and educate them on the matter we are going through now.

I have fallen in love with the character of Candyman. The same night I first saw this trailer, I had to watch the original films. In my days of processing the chilling tale of Candyman, I am left shaken to my core. The hatred that created him is absolutely real and it lives today. There is also the fact that, while this is a work of fiction, Daniel Robitaille's terrible and thoroughly unjust demise was not an exaggeration of the fate's so many fellow innocent people suffered for no other reason but the color of their skin. Terrible fate's still suffered today. Candyman is the ultimate spirit of vengeance and the wonderful Tony Todd deserve tremendous recognition for his contributions to the art of horror. I cannot wait to see this new installment.

Wow. Amazing trailer. Love the original theme music. The puppetry reminds me of The Babadook and the trailer itself is beautiful like in a Hannibal way.

One of the most creative creepiest things I’ve ever seen the timing couldn’t be better with what’s going on right now huge fan of the original i hope the do this remake justice
Alright everyone, so check it out I think I have this movie figured out: so watching this puppet teaser, then considering what we saw in the first trailer that dropped a few months ago, we can connect a few dots... so starting with the first “story” of this, a black man is leaving a candy factory before offering sweets to kids and then subsequently being chased down and beaten by cops. In the first trailer, the man Anthony talks to mentions “the old candy factory.” So it’s possible that that particular story literally took place in the neighborhood in years past. The second and third stories seem to be based on real events, especially of the little black boy accused of murdering two white girls in the 40s. The last story is of course that of Daniel Robataille, which we already know. Throughout the whole thing, we see Anthony painting, which is also mirrored in the first trailer (as well as being a direct connection to Daniel Robatialle as he was also a painter). At the end of this teaser, each character that was murdered seems to “rise” and culminate as the Candyman. Now, when you rewatch the original trailer, you notice that every time someone is slain by the Candyman, you don’t see him, only his reflection. This is likely because he is not one single person, but a collective of murdered black people’s vengeful spirits all rolled into one. Except at the end, we see what we presume to be the Candyman killing a man behind a building, but if you look closely this “Candyman” is wearing white sneakers. Not very begetting of the character, so we can assume that this is Anthony after he had his hand sawed off and the hook placed in his arm. Which is why we see him, as he has literally embodied the SPIRIT of the Candyman, which was shown as a swarm of bees coming through the church window in the scene where we also see the spirit of Helen seated in the pews. This would seemingly confirm the previous rumors about there being a “Hive” of Candymen, Daniel Robataille simply being the progenitor of the entire thing, as his curse began it all. This would explain why both the director and Tony Todd have both been coy about whether Todd is reprising his role or not. He’s not really, only kind of. This would explain another rumor that his cameo is limited to only a small part. Now, add to all of this that the character of Anthony is the baby from the original movie that Helen saved from the bonfire, we can see he has a clear and direct connection to the Candyman and his legend, and thus seems to be a lightning rod for his spirit. One more thing - when we consider how Decosta/Peele are presenting this film in regards to its take on racial divides/violence, we can probably safely assume that the rumors of police brutality in the film that results in a character’s death are also true, as at the end of the first trailer we see the character of Anthony approaching a scene where there are several police vehicles with their lights on as he looks at his reflection in the cop car’s glass (which is a different actor than Yaya Mateen, btw). That’s my theory and I bet I’m close, but what do you guys think??
man oh man, every time my mom played the candyman films when i was younger i’d instantly ZOOM out of the room and turn my tv up full volume. and now i’m actually excited to fully watch this bc Jordan is working on it :)
Exactly. The trailers from that film presented it as an Australian Candyman-type urban legend. Mr Babadook even looks like a character based on Aboriginal/African American folklore.

Me being a horror movie fan and a candy man fan i absolutely loved this, like you know what’s happening and you get this feeling of sadness, creeped, and amazed the point is that I love this vid
In the first trailer, there’s a scene at the art show it’s a very special painting in there they wanted the viewers to pay a lil more attention to. That’s why they showed a full quick glimpse in 3rd person view.
I looked a bit more into the scene in this teaser where a man is dragged to death by some racists in a truck, and that might be a direct reference to this hate crime that happened in 1998 in Jasper, Texas, to a man named James Byrd Jr. This isn't confirmed I believe, but given the teaser showed a real case, they most likely put Mr. Byrd's case there too. It was horrible to look up and think there's sick monsters out there who can possibly do that, but that's the reality of it, and to turn a blind eye to it is siding with the racist assholes that still exist today.
Candyman isn’t just one origin as a urban legend. But he is the culmination of black rage, as I see it. Live in America is hard and cruel for them. That anger and pain must go somewhere. And it does. To Candyman.
Great choice making this more of a sequel and bringing tony back. One of the most underrated horror movie actors he is amazing as candyman and ofcourse was the lead in the super underappreciated 1990 night of the living dead
I held off on watching this as I wanted to just see the movie on its own terms- and I avoid trailers in general for this reason, but broke down since it's so long coming! That was a beautiful short work all on its own. I'm confident this is in the right hands and it's gonna be great.
I think this shows the backstory of either different candymen or different versions of the same story, because the story of the candyman is suppose to be urban legend in this world and urban legends often change based on the person who told them.

It’s just art at its finest and it is amazing.
Just this new rendition of the theme song alone gives me the chills…it has a sense of impending doom and literally makes my skin crawl. Very well done trailer
At first I was like, this trailer is ok. But it doesn’t seem to theme very well with what I remember of Candyman. So I rewatched it. And then rewatched again. Someone else ‘hooked’ it when they said this is quite possibly the best teaser trailer ever made. I have to agree! So subtle and such a beautiful score music overture. Well done, creatives behind this. 👍
Just hearing all these stories again is making me shake horribly and want to cry. Why can’t my people live? Why are you better then us? I’m only 14 why do I have to be concerned about this stuff actually happening to me?
The BvS Comic-Con trailer is the only trailer in recent memory that even comes close to this...and even that one misses the mark compared to this work of art.
The second trailer is intense. But I can't wait for the score itself, I bet it will use the pipe organ/piano/choir score and Robert AA Lowe (whose composing the score unveiled by Nia DeCosta) hopefully add more of what Philip Glass left off in the original film.
Haunting indeed. It also has a bit of a Babadook feel to it (from the title, that film could've been based on an Aboriginal /African American urban legend too).
