Matt, really great class. It showed just how a basic low kick or stomp can be disabling if being attacked. As an officer i used the foot stomp technique that may have saved my life. I was a rookie, had arrested a subject for intoxication, and made the classic mistake of being to close while questioning him. He grabbed for my weapon, but i secured his wrist, before he could gain control of the firearm. As we struggled for the revolver, he was punching me with his other hand. I stomped the top of the arch, of his feet with the heel of my foot using all my body weight. The pain produced was enough that he stopped struggling and dropped to the ground, where I was able to take him into custody. He sustained no serious injuries. Stay safe. Doug.

Thanks Matt for the tutorial. As a boy (about 6 years old) my younger sister and I were attacked by two older boys who were aggressively throwing iced snowballs at us. We were no match for them until I charged and attacked them with a willow staff. Yup, probably used too much force in my retaliation, but after the first couple of strikes they went running. Been a fan of the stick ever since.

I took my 5 foot oak bo staff for a 3 mile walk for traction on ice. I ended up coming back with a 4’ jo staff with a point and a jagged piece of dan bong after jabbing into ice for traction. It immediately made sense to practice techniques with every length of staff since you never know when a stick will spontaneously shorten and you’ll need to finish the last 2 miles with different sorts of weapons in hand. I started the walk practicing bo staff spins in both directions in front and behind the body and finished practicing jo staff under and overgrip strikes. I just placed an order for a Cane Masters bo in hopes the tung oil soak will make a more durable walking stick. Happy New Year!

Just to say Ive now been practicing with my Bo Staff for a week now. Got stiff and found muscles I didnt know I had but its getting easier. But got some bruises and even tho my wife said dont use that in the lounge - I did. It resulted in a glass table being turned into the most expensive jigsaw puzzle you could find lol So no more iside!

I believe that if you are attacked the aim should be to use only the force necessary to defend yourself and to minimise the danger of permanent harm or severe injury to the attacker.

Thanks for the video! I'm still getting over a sinus infection, and the temperature outside is only eight degrees. I don't think I'll be going into my unheated shop today. A funny thing about some of these different combinations is that when I'm just going after my bag, I sometimes forget whatever combination I planned and use combinations of all of these. I'll try to work on these specifics as well. I've found that I sometimes just get myself closer to the bag than I planned, and the next strike is going to be the two-handed shove into where an attacker's jaw/neck/chest would be. Something in my mind just causes me to resort to that move at any moment where I would otherwise hesitate. A couple of weeks ago, you showed a rotational cane strike, and I still want to work on that one more. I'm not sure that it would be as practical, but I think it will force me to work another set of motions through my brain. With my heavy weight, these low kick/stomp kinds of moves might be particularly effective for me.

This video seems more real-world than most. . Maybe you cover this on other videos, but I would like to see what you do when one of those strikes from over-the-shoulder misses the target. . That would be different from just the swinging ecercises. All that kinetic energy - both in the cane and in the body - has to go somewhere, and if it were to go in the wrong direction one would be totally open and off-balance - kind of like a golfer is after they have hit a long drive.

Thank you! I never considered my cane in this way and I need to use two canes to walk. Neither of my canes have an arched style handle, so some of the moves not doable for my canes. But my principle cane is about 1 1/4” cherry hardwood with an oak palm fitted handle, my secondary cane is actually very weak being a collapsible design. I will be doing the things you have suggested within my physical abilities. Thank you again!

When it comes to self defense, for those who have never been in a physical confrontational, "muscle memory" training techniques are essential. The defender has to respond to the aggressor's attack, instinctively without "thinking about" what technique(s) may be required to stop the situation. For this to occur, a person must train continually using the same techniques needed, for self defense.

@pasquinilli
@pasquinilli 2 года назад
I’ll make a video for you using the one arm techniques. Cane masters can make the cane in 7/8” and it will be even lighter and still very strong. Just tell them that I recommended the 7/8” cane and they will make it for you. Many of my students have gone that way as they love how easier it is to wield.

Do you generally carry a cane on good leg side and not your bad leg side. Say no just like when disciplining or training your dog
@pasquinilli
@pasquinilli Год назад
This is from very well.com Which Hand Should Hold the Cane? When using a cane, you should hold it in the hand opposite of the leg that needs support.1 This is far more efficient and helpful than holding it on your weak or injured side. Also, as you walk, you will move the cane at the same time as your weaker leg. Think of it this way: Hold the cane on your strong side and move it along with your weak side.

Matt, as you know with teaching anything including Martial Arts or Self Defence, there are two important things to remember, they are: 1. Attention to detail. 2. Consistancy. You are forgetting to hold the cane correctly while walking, this is a fundamental basic with the founder of Cane Master Canes. Most of the time you walk you are holding the cane with the Horne backwards. You already know that people learn mostly by watching, you can talk all you like about keeping the Horne forwards, but if while demonstrating you are not doing that, you have lost credability with the viewer, most viewers are not going to pick up that walking with the Horne forward is the correct way, they are going to do what they see you do. While demonstrating, you have to be consistent especially with beginners, and monkey see monkey do, followed up with the correct verbal instruction. As a fellow Martial Artist please except my observations in good faith and certainly not as criticism. As a fellow instructor, get your shit together Matt, you know better than that, I expect better of you, and when you view your videos you will also expect better of yourself. Kind regards JJ
