@@vchafab My comment is 7 years old And my little princess who is born blind is 9 years old. She learned to use the white cane when she was 4 or 5 years. She is currently learning Braille. Don't give up. 💪
Hi, FYI. I am a long cane user. I found here in Tucson the buses don't have enough poles for passengers to grab . They heard you like cattle. i am lucky to find my husband and me. a seat! One day using my rigid long cane I boarded the bus sat down .A lady came by and sat next to me. When she went to get up she used my long cane as if it were a. support cane. i had ahl marshmallow tip on it. she sought getting balance ,the bus was moving. she had grabbed it and fwll across me. i asked if she was OK and she said yes. i was shocked and concerned. first thought came to mind was i going to get sued. i notified RSA services for the blind. my O &M instructor Suzie G. she recommended sitting with it at a,45% angle. handle to the back. window I have thought a public service message would be great. i don't have it figured out about doing a you tube video. i have also thought of video taping all the. bad drivers that pull out in front of me when I have the right of way. red light runners too! i am glad I let my learners permit go. I have ROP. driving wouldn't be worth it . i am relieved to be a cane user. i have Anxiety and Depression . The long cane is a peace of mind!😃😃😃😃😃
Thank you so much for sharing your story! I too use a long cane on my excursions and find it extremely comforting as I get around independently. I also counsel individuals as ourselves @ eye2eye peer support program. Your story will be an inspiration to my callers at 833-932-3931.
@blacksheepgirl I was taught the same thing. To point my index finger along the handle of the cane. I've worked with guide/service dogs since 2000 and since my spinal cord injury back in 2004 I've stopped using a can altogether because I don't have enough feeling in my hands/arms to get any useful feedback. I don't think I've ever heard it called the 'pencil grip' before, but I think I know the grip they are talking about.
