Just the video I needed for my little branch bow I'm working on. Many thanks! Gotta say though, the grain on that bow of yours is absolutely gorgeous. I quite like it without the handle.

Hi Weylin. I would definately more like to see, how you build that beauty. The bow is awesome. What are the light spots? Were they cracks you´ve filled up with epoxy and sanded the surface after staining? And what stain did you use? They are eyecatchers...very nice
@SwiftwoodBows
@SwiftwoodBows 10 месяцев назад
Thanks! There were no cracks in the bow. They must just be some variations in the grain that are catching your eye. I used a vinegaroon stain.

Cool. Are there any advantages of this cane wrap, other than looks, lets say compared with raw hide or leather? Thanks for sharing
@SwiftwoodBows
@SwiftwoodBows 10 месяцев назад
Thanks! it's not going to be bothered by water, even if it was soaked. That would be one advantage. Otherwise, it's just another aesthetic choice you can make.

@@SwiftwoodBows Excellent. Thanks. I love your videos, by the way. I am just an archer & bow hunter down south (Mexico) and aspiring bow maker (in the near future). Learning a lot from your channel.

Hi! Nice idea! Can you write down the size of cane or a link to the cane?

@@SwiftwoodBows when you say vinegaroon, you mean like......THE BIG BUG?
@hansimgluck9207
@hansimgluck9207 10 месяцев назад
@@robertmooney1492 He means something like this: Iron dissolved in vinegar, producing a solution that contains iron acetate. This stuff forms insoluble black metal complexes with the tannins in wood or vegetable tanned leather for example. The blackening will slowly happen during the drying process and will be completed when the material is fully dried out. When the material is still wet, it may look a little bit disappointing. The strength of the effect varies (is that the right spelling?) due to the concentration of iron acetate in the solution and the amount of tannins that are availible in the material. If I am allowed, I can post a link to a good manual for the making procedure.

@@hansimgluck9207 thanks for that.ive been woodworking for more than a decade, mostly very elaborate walking sticks, graveside memorials, and door/wall plaques. Although, I did branch out into bowyery about 3-4 years ago, so there are a few techniques I'm not familiar with. All I knew, being a insect/arachnid enthusiast, is that a vinegarroon among other things is a big bug that lives around the border of Mexico and Texas. Looks like the unholy love child between a spider and a scorpion. Actually their one real defense mechanism is to spray a substance at potential predators that is much like vinegar. I thought maybe there was some poor bastard somewhere that had to milk the damn things.....

@@robertmooney1492 WouId make a luxury wood stain then. 😄 I searched vinegaroon to be sure first and found this creature too. Then I added "stain" to my search and found that this was the stuff I knew. Its the same mechanism which was used for iron gall ink in medieval manuscripts, but since there are tannins in wood you don't need to add tannins to the solution. But you can. I tried very intense coffee as a pretreatment for soft whitewood arrows. After treatment with vinegaroon they became dark greenish black. So you can experiment with preadded tannins like in coffee, walnutshells, and stuff like that. Tannins are close to everywhere in nature. To make a intense effect, make sure your tannin concentraion of the pretreatment is rather high. (for example: Make strong espresso and let it cook for a while to raise concentration.)
