May 1st, 2010. 10 years ago, undefeated Saul “Canelo” Alvarez takes on Miguel Cotto’s elder brother Jose in a Welterweight clash. He debuted back in December 1996 while Saul had his first pro bout in October 2005 at 15 years of age. This fight was seen as a serious test for then 19 year old Canelo.
Coincidentally, both had identical number of wins (as well as wins via knockouts) entering the bout.
Prefight records; Alvarez 31(23)-0, Cotto 31(23)-1-1.
In the opening round, they began carefully by testing each other out but at the mid point Alvarez was stunned with a leaping left hook which Cotto followed with a barrage of punches on the ropes. Although the ropes held Canelo up from hitting the canvas, but referee Tony Weeks did not rule it a knockdown.
As for May 2020, Saul Alvarez has yet to have officially been knocked down.
However, the young fighter from Guadalajara weathered the storm to come back strong in the 2nd stanza, countering an overhand right from Cotto with a thunderous right uppercut to send the 13 year Puerto Rican veteran to the canvas while smoothly slipping a left hook with 10 seconds left in the round.
From the 3rd round on, Jose continued to pursue the younger fighter who countered and peppered him with combinations to the body and head (especially on the ropes) while displaying razor sharp accuracy and creative combinations against the rugged 32 year old from Caguas, who showed dogged determination for nearly 30 minutes.
With about 40 seconds left in the 9th, Saul cornered Cotto to the ropes with a right hand before unleashing a barrage of mostly hard right hands en route to a stoppage. Although Jose was able to return fire time after time, but it was not nearly enough to get him out of trouble thus Weeks stepped in with about 10 seconds left to the bell.
This was the only KO loss of Jose Miguel Cotto’s 16 year career. He retired in 2012 with a final record of 33(24)-4-1.
As of April 2020, Canelo had only been beaten once by the undefeated ATG Floyd Mayweather Jr on September 14th 2013. Since his first career setback, he had improved tremendously from there as he displayed more explosive combination punching, slicker defense, increased ring IQ and overall greater versatility over the years.
His current record stands at 53(36)-1-2 and he had won world titles at Light Middleweight, Middleweight, Super Middleweight & Light Heavyweight.
Canelo Alvarez is slated to take on the slick and skillful undefeated 2 weight world champion Billy Joe Saunders at 168 pounds, although the date of the bout is uncertain at this time due to ongoing global issues.
