Why they put rice and pearl into the dead's mouth? It's a VNese traditional ritual. The ritual for the dead in VN consists of 6 steps that "Canh Ba" shows 2 of them: - The 1st ritual is "Lễ Mộc Dục" - Relatives wash up the body of the dead. While they do this ritual, they have to put a knife, a square towel, a comb, little soil, a pot of mixture of water and 5 spices (you see 5 dishes of these spices in the MV at 2:05) and a pot of hot water. This ritual has to be done in a room covered with curtains. People who wash up the dead's body have to kneel. And because in the MV, people who clean the body of the man are not his relatives so they have to cover their eyes. - The 3rd ritual is "Lễ phạn hàm" - Put rice and use chopsticks to put gold (or pearl for royal family) into the dead's mouth to prevent ghosts or devils take his soul away. When doing this ritual, the dead has to be laid on a mat on the earth so the body can be covered with the breath of the earth, which means "every thing after death will return to the Mother of the Earth". This ritual also brings other meaning: To meet fully the wishes of the dead. And this ritual also brings hope that people can live a prosperous life after death.
