Anyone who says they’re “not a cat lover” just hasn’t met the right cat! I adore cats, have had four over the years, befriended many outdoor neighborhood cats, and have gotten to know different cats belonging to friends and family. Cats are as wide and diverse as people. If you keep your heart and mind open, you’re sure to meet a cat you love!

@@PerfectPride ... oh I have had cats too!! Haha... with personalities as diverse as people’s.... but they have always had kind of a “take ya or leave ya” attitude. Not really a desire to please exactly. Dogs on the other hand never hold a grudge.... want to please so much.... want to be right by your side always and are faithful to the end. Russell seems to have those attributes as well and he is so cute! But.. on the good side.... cats don’t dig holes in the yard chasing moles.... they don’t jump on neighbors wanting a “pet”... and they don’t bark all night. I’ll give them that! Hahaha

My mom used to cure them in three gallon jars, first with the lye, then the lye is taken out via water, then salt water cured. Each step takes days with daily monitoring with test papers. The rinse step is a daily water change until no lye comes out on the test paper. When she would test them she would take one out, slice down to the seed and then you touch the paper to it. They were the best olives, like a kalamata without the vinegar and extra oil.

How many of you were saying, "No Laura, don't eat the olive!" The harvest would be less complicated if they were like grapes. Now you know why olive oil is so expensive.
@judyk2378
@judyk2378 2 года назад
Yes, I was saying no, no, no. We had 2 olive trees in CA in the back orchard and my Dad never harvested them. I asked him why and he said they have to be 'cured' first - I think that was the term he used - he was too busy harvesting all the fruit trees and mostly almond trees (15 acres); some walnut and a few pecans. We didn't have peanuts but someone at work once asked me how they were grown - I knew they grew underground; and they also asked how cashews were grown. That one I had to look up and was surprised at the process of harvesting cashews (and also how dangerous they could be if not handled correctly).

So cheap here... Crete Greece...it has nothing to do with harvest or cure as in price. It has to do with where it grows and zone/climate. Here in Greece its the main tree so most everyone has olive trees to harvest and produce oil or cure olives. A farmer sells the oil around $2 per liter and around the same for prepped olives a kilo. But you guys get it much more expensive because you do not produce and because of shipping from mostly Southern Europe

About the olives, my grandpa used to get some to cure himself, he made one batch were he kept the olives intact and another where he split them. The intact ones were a little bit more bitter than the split ones, so everyone in the family could choose depending on their taste ! He used dill (both seeds and stem pieces) to season the brine and it was the best thing on earth along with my grandma cooking... 😏 I miss those times, wish i took the time to learn how he did it, unfortunately he stopped when i was too young to realize and care...

Good morning😀 Canna lillies are great for those of us who love to get a lot of bang for our bucks, they grow new rhizomes quickly. Most can tolerate moist conditions and thrive in water gardens. I also had a beautiful white Calla lily that was great in my water garden. If you haven't tried water gardening I highly recommend it, it's super easy and doesn't require constant watering like regular gardening!

I had a neighbor who left her cannas in the ground(zone 5b) and since they were planted next to the foundation of her house it kept them warm enough to safely overwinter in the ground! Sometimes it's worth taking a chance on plants that are borderline hardy to your zone🌞
@gardengatesopen
@gardengatesopen 2 года назад
My kids live in Northern part of Dallas, zone 7a, and they have a large patch of cannas (about 20 feet long, and 3 feet wide) which grow waaay far away from the house, zero protection from anything. They never dig them up. Every year the cannas die back in the Winter, and that's when they get cut back to the ground. Every Spring there's more Cannas! The entire patch made it thru the big Arctic storm which hit Texas this last February, and the temperatures were as low as -5° for several days!! Those cannas pulled thru like those extreme cold temperatures were never even here!! As a comparison, my Daffodils bit the dust in that storm, but not their cannas!! Those buggers are TOUGH!! Side Note- There is a moth who uses the cannas as a host plant. And every year there are hundreds of caterpillars who munch on those big leaves. This makes my son in law a little nutty. He says he feels invaded! But I keep telling him it's just nature doing its thing! After the caterpillars are done, he just cuts the eaten leaves off and the plants simply grow new leaves! No harm done!
@angelaengler2387
@angelaengler2387 2 года назад
@@gardengatesopen my Cannas got fuzzy caterpillars that ate the leaves this year, first time I've had that problem. I hope it's a freak thing as I am keeping the rhizomes in their pot and not watering them until Spring. They will be stored in my potting shed that I keep at 50ish degrees, I will see how they do.
@gardengatesopen
@gardengatesopen 2 года назад
@@angelaengler2387 I'm just going to guess that it's not a freak thing. And I only say that bcuz this is exactly what Nature is set up to do. So it sounds like you're creating a very healthy ecosystem out in your garden! Every plant is a host plant for SOME insect. EVERY plant. It's Nature's plan. And the beauty of that plan is that it works. The good thing about cannas is the plant has evolved to feed those caterpillars, AND then continue on to not only survive, but to flourish. So no worries when that moth lays those eggs, and the onslaught of caterpillars has arrived! The cycle of life is playing out, and the canna's leaves will be ugly for a little while, but then the plant will be fine! It will grow new leaves. And the beauty will continue. This world needs insects. And the imperfection that's created by them is the true nature OF Nature. Insects are gross, and creepy, I agree! But it's also very interesting to watch. ❤
@gardengatesopen
@gardengatesopen 2 года назад
@@NO-ns2tw yeah, those zones are tricky for me... Mostly bcuz all of Texas has such a big range of temperatures. You probably are in zone 8. Officially, I think y'all are in 8a, and I'm in 8b? Or something like that... But it always seems colder up there to me! Which I think is why I'm always thinking the Dallas area is in zone 7... And then there's times like last February where that one long storm put us ALL into an zone 6 (I think it was?) for that entire week! Or was that zone 5 temperatures??! But then, growing up in Dallas, I remember playing softball with my family on more than one Christmas Day, and going barefoot for it too! But then, some Winters it never does get very cold, like EVER! Those times, I'm in zones 10 or 11 for the entire Winter! Texas weather is so crazy!! Maybe we should have hyphenated zones! Like, you and I both live in: "zone 6-10 depending". I guess that's hyphenated with extending circumstances!

I planted one red canna, I purchased from one of our garden centers, in the ground around June (it was tiny, in a 6 inch pot with 3 little stems coming out) and had to dig it up just a couple days ago. I didn't think I could get it without my husband's help but I did and oh lord...I knew it had more than grew 6 times bigger but when I dug it up, I was surprised to see that I will be getting approximately 32 or more new Red Canna's next year to plant. That is of course if all goes well in storage. I'm storing them today.

@laurelrosegardens6454

@@dpstoops I don't separate the mass until spring. I just put the whole chunk in the basement in some peat moss and get as much soil off as possible but don't worry about picking it clean. It's much easier to separate the growth points in the spring when the dead parts of the mass have desiccated and you can just cut them away.

Benjamin is such a TREASURE!!!! Cracked me up when he kicked the pumpkin further into the chicken coop rather than pick it up!! 😂🤣 Great way to start the day (hoping to get about 100 daffs and tulips planted before it rains) with a lesson from Laura about cannas and callas along with humorous moments with Russell and Benjamin. I’m raring’ to go now! ♥️🐈👦🏻♥️

I love the beautiful coffee cups you use but I could never do that. I’d drop them on concrete, get soil in the coffee, or worst leave them somewhere where I was working and I’d find them next season. Do you ever use ones like the Yeti cups? Perfect video for me. I went out this morning to find some plants taken by frost. Didn’t see it coming either 😭. Can’t wait to see the heat on in the greenhouse.

Plus those Yeti type cups keep your coffee hot for a long time. Also the soil and critters don't find themselves at the bottom of an open cup.

Olive trees are actually fairly cold tolerant ! they can withstand temperatures as low as 10F and show no signs of damage ! So you really only need to move them when those temperatures are set to last for a long time ( assuming that the pot won’t freeze) 🙂

So many bulbs for flowers next year. A lot of work, but savings in replacement cost! I was chuckling at Russell in the crate. What is it with cats not being able to resist chillin’ out inside a box? 💚💚💚

Cannas are fine - we have freezing weather and they stay out all winter - now our ground doesn't freeze (zone 8)- but yours weren't in but for one night - they'll be fine!

I was shouting at the screen not to pop that Olive in your mouth🤣🤣I own a Olive oil store so I know enough that raw olives are horrible. Actually while I love oil I don’t like olives but I have tried raw ones and I know your pain.

Zone 8, we do not have to store our cannas, callas, elephant ears or angel trumpet plants…Maybe zone 6 and lower.. My olive tree has been outside for 2 years and is doing fantastic…

Is there any better feeling than checking on a plant or getting ready to store it and seeing that it has thrived??? 😍😍 Great results, Laura!! Your canna/calla planting vid this Spring inspired me to give them a try in my own garden. 💫

Love all the falling leaves, but how do you get them cleaned out of all the pots, beds and hedges? Do you use a leaf blower, rake them out of the bushes or leave a lot in the beds to break down? You have pretty dense amounts from what I see…good luck getting your garden ready for Old Man Winter 🥶 Love your energy/ maybe it’s those six cups of coffee ☕️! I’d be flying like the drone if I consumed that😱🤣 So love seeing Benjamin and the furry, ginger boys helping and overseeing so many of your projects🥰

What a nice video. I loved the variety of things you shared. Each activity was new to me and so interesting. Congratulations on the olives. I'm aware of a few people growing Olive trees and you are the first to have a harvest. All the best with the water and brining process. Please share your experience with it. Thanks.

This has been a favorite GA growing season of mine. A lot of variety of content, plus I don’t have a large yard for growing beautiful plants and I so enjoyed more things in pots. Not that I don’t enjoy the south garden etc….love it! But the thought of an olive tree in a pot excites me…but poor Laura tasting that uncured olive.😖🪴🥰

Gosh I'm worn out watching you, you work so hard in your garden, I only have a tiny garden in comparison to yours so I know how hard you work. The olive tasting made me laugh at your reaction, (sorry about that my bad) however your fail has given so many the knowledge we never knew. Again another fabulous video x

I started out by googling what I should do with my rose bushes for winter and ended up on this channel... best rabbit hole I went down in a while!! Instantly subscribed! She's very knowledgeable and so easy to watch and listen to... awesome 👌🏻 Not sure where she is located tho, I'm in Pennsylvania and wondering if the zone is the same?

She is in SE Oregon, sort of a new zone 6. Until it is not, and goes back to a 5. Mother Nature is quirky.
