@OfficerRFriendly

@@thatisabsolutelykooooge2211 you don't prove a genetic predisposition to cannabis induced psychosis - you can't do a blood test for something that is inherently a perception distortion (which is what delusions are). If there's a family history of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder that's a very strong indicator that you shouldn't be touching pot. If she were a killer at heart, there would have been indicators. Morbid interests and google searches, motive suggestive of sadistic impulses, etc. Instead you had a woman who consumed drugs with the person she was dating and had a complete break from reality - stabbing not just him, but herself and her own dog as well. That, coupled with the investigation into her devices and thorough assessment by mental health professionals is how you reach the conclusion that what was happened was a legitimate psychosis.

Anecdotally, I know of at least 2 people in my area who had schizophrenia, used a lot of psychotropic drugs including but not limited to marijuana, psilocybin, and LSD. These people are no longer with us after going off the deepend and eventually taking their own lives. I'd like more research to be done on cases like these, and maybe regulations can be put in place as far as dosages and concentrations available at dispensaries, or maybe even have schizophrenia marked as contraindicated for marijuana use.

I'm sorry but a psychotic break is nothing like being drunk. It's a totally uncontrollable state of mind, truly horrifying. Things done on a psychotic break cannot be prosecuted. The only argument I see here is the intent had when consuming a substance that is known for inducing psychotic breaks IN YOU. Like, a kid dying because their mom fed them something they were unknowingly allergic to - tragic accident. Kid dying because the mom knowingly fed them something they were allergic to - clearly murder.

Cannabis user here and I will say this I am aware there have been countless murders done while high on marijuana people have smoked tobacco before and after killing and many more have been drunk on alcohol killing on purpose or manslaughter. When a person is mentally disturbed I don't think their substance use is the prime motivating factor in a deadly murder they commit it but can possibly for some people. I think its safe to say that it is very rare for marijuana users to commit murder crimes and confident to say alcohol has made best friends and family members pull guns on each other all over a drunken rage. It was said in the house floor before marijuana does not make men beat their wives alcohol typically does.

As I’ve said before, doesn’t matter if someone is drunk OR high murder is still murder. (Involuntary manslaughter here I guess but still) Getting off easy with killing a person is always terrible, RIP Chad 💜 Weed tablets have helped my anxiety and daily pain amounts *immensely* I can literally walk around with x5 less physical pain and then having people being idiots after using substances (often times too much) makes it look bad for us all. Something else was definitely up here imo. Thanks for another good one Dr Grande we always appreciate your case analysis/opinions! Edit- I know seeing her as a “murderer” might be a strong opinion, but she used herself. Involuntary manslaughter is appropriate but I still think something was strange with this case. I think people forget it’s still a drug and medicine, not just a plant. Abuse and misuse ofc can lead to worse outcomes, but to end someone’s life who was offering you free weed is just strange imo. Ofc I’m not a doctor, judge or anything of the sort! Just my two cents as well lol, thanks again good coverage I hope more awareness comes soon surrounding safe drinking and drug practices. Some would say that none is safest, but abstinence training doesn’t work too well lol. I think having a wider conversation about how drugs (and drinking) can seriously affect your brain and *how* they can, because it’s like people forget they can easily become paranoid on weed?? That’s one of the things it’s most known for, yeah it makes most of us chill out but for some it also turns on their negative brain issues. If you just take without recognizing your potential consequences, and especially if you let others take the brunt of those consequences, I think that makes you an extremely immature person who deserves to go to jail for a while. RIP again Chad how horrible of a way to die ❤️‍🩹 and the dog too like ???? If she knew she reacts adversely to it and hasn’t had much effect before, then she proceeds to do it again with someone experienced and then attack them, that’s her fault %1000 not his. She knew her past with the drug and decided to ingest it, then take more when she didn’t feel anything. It reminds me of the recent case with the kid on mushrooms who killed his parents because he took too much with his friends. If you don’t respect your medicines, and then take the consequences of your actions out on others, I think that’s stupid and always will lol. Will stop rambling now sorry!! 😅🫣🤷‍♀️

I want to add something that nobody is considering in the legislature surrounding weed: The fact that most strains today have at least 15-20% thc and a lot less cbd. And some go up to 30% thc/1-0% cbd and are associated with episodes of heavy psychosis and early-onset schizophrenia. But at low doses it far far less associated with psychosis. So maybe it should be time to look further than "weed bad/good" and go into the specifics. There is a reason why a lot of european states banned drinkable alcohol above 50-60% ethanol, it's the drug that's linked to the most cases of violent behavior over here.

Of course my daughter thinks she's just fine, it's the rest of the world that's crazy. Obviously she takes no responsibility though, which is extremely frustrating because it most definitely changes her personality. She'll gaslighting, cuss and scream until the cows come home, but within a sentence or two after the fact, she'll deny ever saying the things she's said, or act the way she acts. She thinks I'm just being critical and judgmental, which is anything but that, I truly want to help her! I've decided that the next time she's acting like she's in Psychosis, I'm going to video record her, then show her when she's no longer acting that way. American law has an ambivalent attitude when it comes to drug-influenced behavior. DUI is a crime, with the driver held responsible for his or her actions, but legally speaking, an intoxicated adult is incapable of giving consent for sex, so that casual sex at a party can morph into a rape charge if remorse kicks in. The remorseful partner is not considered to be at fault for his or her decision to engage in sexual activity, while the non-remorseful partner may be judged to be a rapist. Drunks who get aggressive and fight with people are still charged with assault and battery, even if the next day they have no memory of the event, and have never done anything like that when they were sober. But in cases like this, being high (or experiencing temporary insanity or cannabis-induced psychosis) was considered to be a reason for a lighter sentence. A review of cases involving bath salts or steroids will give a very mixed result. So... is a person responsible for their actions and decisions while drunk/high/stoned/intoxicated or not?

Psychologists have deemed Amber Roberts competent to stand trial, according to her assessment at Western State Hospital near Tacoma that included her family history, past drug use and mental illness among other factors. But most of the people I know found out after 1 or 2 times and never touched it again. I agree,, and I applaud your friend who discontinued using marijuana because it was making their psychological symptoms worse.... Cannabis is a weird substance because although it hasn't ever been known to cause an overdose, people think it's a harmless substance and the reasons people have for consuming cannabis kind of invite aberrations in the psychic effects, because if a person always expects to be calmed by it, it's not a cure-all or a magical substance and if a person takes it and starts feeling paranoid or some sort of weird violent impulses, obviously they should stop taking it and find something else to do with their time...

I dont say it was directly and solely the fault of weed, but he would deteriorate for weeks or months before, smoke a ton and then snap completely. Like, the amount he smoked directly correlated to his mental decline, to the point that NOT smoking would prevent him from another break. After two breaks he finally let himself be diagnosed and is strictly kept sober. So far, it has helped.

But I have seen some rare "bad trips" of my friends with panic and fear in their eyes or getting violent because they get paranoid and that's so scary!! My stepfather said that the weed today is much more potent than 25 years ago. (But my aunt got schizophrenia from the less potent weed 25 yrs ago).

Many men have gotten years in jail merely for using drugs and not hurting anyone from it. And even if she was temporarily psychotic, again many psychotic people have gotten years in jail for the crimes they committed during psychosis. If that isn't an excuse for them, that shouldn't be an excuse for her. Her walking free is an insult to Chad and his family.

Unlike drinking too much alcohol and killing someone in a bar fight, marijuana has never caused murderous psychosis in anyone else, yet the evidence suggests that she really did go into psychosis, therefore she hadn't been reckless in anyway whatsoever. Something that has never happened before is not a foreseeable risk in doing that activity. This should not even be involuntary manslaughter, she is not guilty of anything, unless she faked it, but she doesn't have a motive, isn't irresponsible, nor shows any indicators of prior antisocial behaviour. This is more like an undiagnosed coeliac going into psychosis from gluten and debating whether she deliberately ate a slice of bread, even though violent psychosis in undiagnosed ceoliacs is much more likely than violent psychosis induced by marijuana.

That’s messed up. That poor kid in Florida was eating and killing his neighbors, and he was I think diagnosed to be psychotic at the time, and he still has to spend the rest of his life in prison. That kid in Fl like 19 yrs old. He had no drugs or alcohol. He was into racing cars one night everybody’s gathered around watching. This dude starts racing another guy he’s all adrenaline excited when he looked up he was about to blow a stoplight, and he almost didn’t even see the lady pushing a baby carriage.

A friend of mine once got into a total psychosis from smoking too much weed in Amsterdam (where the weed is rly strong). He was convinced that he was dead and in an afterlife test of faith created by god. He was convinced that he needs to harm himself to prove himself to god, so he would put his hand into torches or smash his face into windows. All my attempts to reason with him were futile, it was as if he couldn't even hear me talking to him or even notice that I'm there at all. He snapped from one moment to another and he was completely disconnected from reality for some hours. Also, it was not his first time smoking weed. Just saying, for those of you judging her as a murderer, just because you or nobody you know experienced cannabis-induced psychosis, doesn't mean it's not a real phenomenon. Any psychedelic substance can cause a total rupture from reality to certain individuals when the dose is high enough

This is the first time in my 62 years I've ever heard of weed causing aggression. I cannot consume weed because if I smoke it, I get pschotic paranoia, and if I eat it, it triggers my depressive disorder. Of course the weed today IS extremely more potent than the stuff when I was younger. I agree with you about her consequences. There weren't any. She killed that man, and should have spent time in jail. I believe this is an example of women possibly getting off easier than men. I'm a woman, by the way. This gal should have had some prison time. Some who was drunk would have.

Thanks for your post. When one is psychotically paranoid (your term) or cluster B paranoid personality disorder, can cause violence sometimes; extreme fear can result in violence, of course. Whether the fears are genuine danger or delusional paranoia, violence may be engaged in for self-protection. Everyone knows this. That is why fear mongering is used in political manipulations. Just plain evil.

“When will the effects of marijuana be taken seriously?”… cmon man, the probability of smoking pot and brutally murdering someone has to be one in 10s of millions at least. Is it a stressor that can cause psychosis? Sure, so is losing a loved one or a breakup. We don’t tell people not to date because they might end up going on a murderous rampage because of how insanely unlikely that is. Lots of things can cause a psychotic break for a person with an unusual predisposition to psychosis while being completely harmless to 99.9999% of people. I don’t even smoke pot, but this habit of taking crazy outliers like this and using them as cautionary tales for the masses is ridiculous.

Responding to so many comments here…just because you haven’t experienced it and don’t know anyone who has experienced it doesn’t mean it isn’t real. I know someone who has experienced cannabis-induced psychosis. Psychosis can actually be induced by other drugs as well. It’s rare but some people are just vulnerable to it. There isn’t enough research about it, but it seems to effect certain people who are more vulnerable to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia…there are plenty of anecdotes about people who believe the onset of their bipolar or schizophrenic symptoms resulted after drug use, too. We do know that bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are genetic but with life factors playing some role in when and whether those genes are expressed. So it makes sense drugs could cause onset of symptoms just like stress could cause onset of symptoms.

I agree; I think people should be held criminally responsible for their behavior during voluntary substance use; a person list their life due to her decision to use cannabis; sure, it wasn’t premeditated or intentional; and sure, she was almost certainly psychotic during the killing, but why should she get to go without incarceration while she took a human off of the planet? Makes me wonder if she elicited daughter-like transference and sympathy from the judge
