As most of you already know my local Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Dollar General or Walmart stores are my own personal adult playgrounds. I shop at these stores to find food that is generally highly processed, full of fillers and simply bad for us to eat regularly! Meat, vegetables, canned food, frozen food, refrigerated food, boxed food, vegan food, vegetarian food and all sorts of prepared foods, if it's cheap and questionable I will do a taste test and food review on it! I also show you these foods are no bargain like these discount stores and manufacturers lead you to believe. I do this to show you that fresh foods are not only healthier, but they're also cheaper than these so called bargain foods. So far I haven't gotten sick, but some of these foods are certainly questionable and have come close to making me sick.

Some of the big brands have rested on their reputations way too long, and they have been chiselling away at the quality to cut production costs. This is an example of an emergent brand beating its more expensive rival.

Cut every single corner possible in order to save a penny, but at the same time, raise the price of the product to fully please the Stockholders. It's a disgusting shame. Literally. That's just a sliver of a fraction of what my overall opinion is. There are many factors that go into the reasoning that so many sh!tty products keep being bought up by the average consumer.

Libby's is good I've had this before, it has a lot of sausage more than i expected. Wolf pit you have to heat it on the stove and add a bit of water to loosen it up.

I tried making a homemade version of this today. It turned out pretty good. I'm in the UK, and it's not something that's ever eaten over here, so I thought I'd have a stab at a nice American style meal. Turned out really well, and tasty. I used about 1/4lb of sausage meat (bought as a brick of meat) a rasher of bacon two sliced Spring onions (Called something else in the US. Long and thin ones) And fried it all. Added the flour, salt, black pepper, then slowly added milk until the consistency was about right. Had it on mashed potato with fried chicken and sweet corn. Still have another 1/4lb of sausage meat, so will be trying this again soon. Next I want to try and make American Biscuits to have it over.

Dan Coulson It really is super easy though. In my household we just use sausage, a bit of vegetable oil, flour, milk, then salt and pepper!

Yeah, I was impressed with how easy and good tasting it was actually. I think it will be a standard dish for me now. Nice to have a taste of proper American food again. I do miss being over there. I see what he says about black pepper in it though! It certainly improves the taste :D

Libby's is good !!!! Serving size is two.... Great gravy but you need to add salt.... Don't try to save it in the fridge. It turns to mush. All and all it's great righjt out of the can but not something you can save. Enjoy because it's good !!!!

I know exactly what the problem was. Corn starch. It was in the Libby's and it's in all the instant just add water and heat dried gravy mixes. That stuff tastes like glue. For some reason some people don't mind or can't tell the difference.

The great value does say modified food starch, which very well could be corn starch but they don't specify. Both looked pretty same in consistency to me at least.

I always thought the off taste was how they cooked the flour in, but corn starch makes a lot of sense. Homemade is always better, but now I know what to keep an eye out for with the cans.

One thing I can tell you with 100% certainty is that Brand Names and House Brands are all made in the same plants. They just put the various labels on the cans/bottles/jars. I learned that working in the grocery industry for 35 years. Libby's here in Canada got bought by Heinz.

Rachel P Trust me, I know that. When I worked Nightcrew I bought every new food item and tried it on my breaks. We carried some MREs I tried those as well. There was a time when I worked for Canada Safeway that part of the service was if a Customer wanted to know how something tasted like Rice/Almond Milk we opened a container and tried some with the Customer. I figured if I didn't try it,I couldn't tell a Customer if it was good or not. I've tasted some bad Generic/House Brands.

I love the Libby's brand. I always add a touch of chicken broth to it and it thins it out and adds additional flavor. And yes I definitely add pepper preferably fresh ground pepper. Thanks for the review

Rick and I have seen canned sausage gravy and wondered if it was any good. I know that we have seen Castleberry brand but not the Libby's. Castleberry is our favorite brand of corned beef hash with Walmart brand coming in a close second. I will have to get a can of that Castleberry gravy and see how we like it. Great idea for quick breakfasts or lunches when you don't have time to cook a pan of your own. I mean, I actually like the biscuits and gravy from McDonalds and I am certain that comes out of a can. Thanks again Larry for doing your scientific experiments for our benefit!

Libby's normally makes good products with the exception of their corned beef hash, Hormel has the better corned beef hash while most other Hormel products from their canned chili to their microwave meals are pretty much garbage. Some well known companies will only have one single item that's delicious while everything else they make is no good.

I order this by the case, via Amazon. Health problems keep me from driving, so being delivered to me is great. Tastes very good. Lots of good sausage in this brand. Wonderful over toasted bread. Libby's for the win.

It's been my experience that the Great Value foods, on the whole, tend to be better than most on the ingredients list. Try the Great Value frozen biscuits with this. You won't regret it. I figured the ConAgra brand (Libby's) was gonna suck, so I won that bet; that huge conglomerate is more about "better living through chemistry" than even Dow chemical or Monsanto!

I make sausage gravy. Bacon gravy. Hamburger gravy. Country gravy. Libby's is the ONLY canned gravy I like. But, I don't own a microwave, maybe that was the deal here. To me, Libby's is just as good as Bob Evans...but now that I think on it, I add a ton of black pepper and little cream and butter to stretch it. McCormick, believe it or not, makes a powered peppered or sausage flavored gravy. Add meat and drippings, some milk and boom. It's actually damn good. For the price--since Bob Evans is so damn expensive, I find Libby's to be great in a late-night pinch over some boiled potatoes, or the McCormick if I'm going full-out Sunday breakfast. I'm po' but not so much to where I will shop at Walmart, so I'll skip on that. Libby's I found at a local dive store, hard to find it at a 'legitimate" grocery store around here. McCormick I found on Amazon's Prime Pantry. I say give Libby's another chance and doctor it up a little. You're right, it has a ton of sausage in it, so it's worth going back to via stovetop.

If you end up with bland tasting gravy just cook some bacon and pour some of the fresh hot drippins into the gravy mix and if that doesn't twang your buds, add some melted butter and maybe extra salt and pepper to your taste. BTW Libby uses stale tasting dry milk powder instead of regular milk to their mix. That's where you sense that rotten taste that is hard to overcome sometimes. It's strong. It's like going to an aunt's house that drinks cheap beer and always wants a wet kiss.....lol.

I can not disagree with you more. I thoroughly enjoy Libby’s Sausage and Biscuit gravy. After trying other brands when I could not find Libby’s gravy, I now search out just that gravy from stores like Dollar General, Kroger and Walmart. Never being raised on sausage gravy I know I have a different prospective. The product to my taste is very good and the gravy does not in the least remind me of Elmer’s glue, just good eating,

Not a long term food storage item. The milk product will cause it to go bad inside the can over time. So, I'll just have to learn how to make my own and when SHTF happens, I will have the basic ingredients in house to make it when we want it. Cheers!!

This is one "convenience" food I'll never understand. Though I don't love microwaveable foods I do understand why most of them exist because making the real thing takes significant time, and maybe a little effort. But you can make homemade gravy in the time it takes to heat this, like three minutes max.

Lactic acid is also derived from milk and is likely the larger concern for those who have lactose intolerance. Lactic acid is what happens when bacteria break down the lactose in the mammal, after all.

Ok, I've taken off 70 (closing in on 75) lbs since December. One rule of thumb I have now, is to avoid foods that have more mg of sodium than calories. That eliminates almost all canned foods. I'll take 2 X mg sodium than calories for a veggie dip, where I'll be having 30 to 40 grams of dip to 300 to 400 grams of veggies. I couldn't enjoy most canned foods before I started eating right, but now most of them taste like a prank.

You are right about the Libby's gravy, something is off about it. Maybe they are making it up North? I bought a can of it a couple of weeks ago at the Dollar General. It didn't taste as good or as right as a can of the Food Club sausage gravy from Food City. I will get a can of the Great Value and try it out.

Never tried the Great Value but keep Libby's in the cupboard. It's really thick, try thinning with a 1/2 can of milk and heating on the stove.

i've tried both years ago. to me libbys is better. great value uses hardly any sausage. with libbys they use a lot. clear winner is libbys to me and thats what i buy.

Great Value (WAL-MART) brand stuff is really good considering the price tag, perfect example is the Great Value brand Cheddar & Sour Cream Chips, which if you LOVE Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream, you'll be hooked as it tastes just like em, and at half the price that they usually are, so you can get two bags of Great Value over 1 bag of Ruffles.

Walmart generics have been going up in quality while name brands are sinking lower and lower. The name brands are just selling the name, raising prices and cutting corners to rip off people who fall for the Veblen goods effect. NONE of the big-brand "vanilla" ice creams that I looked at while grocery shopping at Walmart had actual vanilla in them; they were "vanilla flavored" with zero vanilla in the ingredient lists. I TRUSTED YOU, KEMPS! But anyway, the Great Value vanilla ice cream was the only brand I found with real vanilla in it. How messed up is that???

Corn starch seems to give canned sausage gravy a weird texture and taste. Some canned sausage gravy has more than others. And the more corn starch the sausage gravy has the slimier it taste. Don't know why they don't use just flour only as a thickener. That's one of the reasons I hate any canned sausage gravy. And many restaurants serve it out of the can too.

Regarding the serving size, it is legitimate. Consumers bastardize serving sizes. If people eat a variety of healthy foods, they can eat smaller portions. The problem is most people eat huge quantities of a few foods, usually calorically dense, leading to obesity and nutritional deficiencies

i personally hate gravy mixes. they are really really easy to make just after looking at a few recipes. Let's say eggs benedict is a 6/10 on the difficulty scale. Making gravy would be somewhere around 0.5-1/10

If I ever considered purchasing canned gravy, both my parents would reconstitute themselves from their ashes to come beat the beejayzuz out of me. Gravy takes one minute!
