Lot's of questions about listed sugars in the ingredients but not on the nutritional facts. This should clear it up for you guys! www.fda.gov/Food/GuidanceRegulation/GuidanceDocumentsRegulatoryInformation/LabelingNutrition/ucm064932.htm
TheWolfePit hey man, how often do you get sick from eating these items from the Dollar Store? I'm not trying to be rude in any way. I truly want to know the odds of getting sick if I do have to eat one of these types of items one day. Thanks for the videos bud, keep up the good work and watch your health in general just because we aren't kids anymore lol.
+trppytoes - By-and-large the stuff you get from the dollar store is identical to the stuff you get at a regular grocery, just packaged under a different name. Even when it's not the stuff isn't going to make you sick. As lenient as the food and safety guidelines are they still don't allow pure disease and rot through. The only thing I'd be suspicious of is seafood, simply because I wouldn't trust it to have been refrigerated properly during the entire transit.
I am NOT an oyster fan, but I find this fascinating. And I am not surprised to find out that an American, family ran business produces a superior product to an international conglomerate. As always, looking forward to your next video for a nice break in this crazy world we live in.
Thanks Larry! I'll have to order some of these! One of my favorite hors d'oeuvre is skewering a good smoked oyster on a tooth pick along with a cube of sharp cheddar cheese and a pitted green olive. The flavors just pop!
Thumbs up if the RU-vid rabbit hole brought you here. I love this channel!! Keep it up Wolfe!! You have made me think a bit more before I buy processed food at the store! Good to check the facts before you take a bite!!
Willipa Bay is one of the cleanest estuaries in the United States. I camped there as a Boy Scout and we could have all the oysters we could eat. A great camp out- all you can eat oysters and Smores!!!LOL!!!
I had my honeymoon on the penninsula; if I'm thinking of same place, I once had oysters cooked over heated rocks while camping in that area. Learned that there are several types of oysters and tried 'purple fringed'. I never liked oysters till I had them fresh
I had canned smoked oysters for the first time today. I'm eating then right now. They are actually not bad. I warmed them up and seasoned them a bit, but they still tasted great straight from the can. The brand is "crown prince"
I took your advise on the tuna and now only buy American Tuna. The flavor is amazing and the extra cost is offset by not paying for added water and oil. Looks like I have to try these now! Keep up the great videos and comparisons to food from the USA
I adore this channel! It feels like a big family. And im also glad that hateful comments are kept to a minimum; mostly just good people enjoying life and engaging in friendly banter.
I recently ordered and received a 6 pack each of the original smoked oysters and the mussels. Tried one of each thus far and they did not disappoint. Plump and clean with the perfect amount of smoke. They were nothing short of fantastic. I'll be ordering more from Ekone in the future! On another note, I was not aware of Ekone's culinary gems until I viewed this very video flick. Thank you and mahalo!
The reason the lemon pepper nutrition facts are different is because they are the most updated requirements of the FDA. They now are doing serving sizes closer to how much one person would eat in a sitting instead of a recommended serving
After having watched both of your oyster videos I'm sitting here eating a can of chicken of the sea, and wondering what flavors I'm missing out on. Man I would really like to try the others in your second video here.
California roll isn't considered real sushi, its an Americanized roll. But i love California rolls, Publix has decent sushi for being from a grocery store. Also publix chicken is pretty orgasmic as well.
there is a vendig machiene in France on the island ,,Ile de Re'' where you can buy fresh , cold stored oisters 24h day& night. they cost about 35€ for ~ 35 pieces and you get them in a box.
sadly, i am the only oyster eater in the family, oh well... more for me. XD i was thinking of making a smoked oyster pizza to make these pricey oysters stretch, what do you think, would that be a good or bad move?
I've never tried oyster, but I love mussels and clams so I'm sure I'd love it too. This is the first time I've seen oysters prepared in this form though.
Man, I just love this channel so much. You have no clue how good it is to just sit back, relax, hook this up to my TV, grab a cigarette, and just watch away. You are SO much more different then any other channel. I have used your recipes many times, which made my family very happy. They especially enjoyed the "Moink Balls" You are AWESOME Larry. For every Jethro reference, every Fountains of Wayne reference, you make me laugh. I have introduced these videos to my family, and they as well love your work. You are an awesome cook and an awesome youtuber! From us, the people, to you, TheWolfePit!
My Big Lots sells canned crab for $1.86 a tin. Made some crab cakes out of it and they came out really nice! Meat could have been chunkier, but it was real crab meat with little water. Usually these things are full of fillers or water. The canned oysters? BLECH! May as well just get the real thing at Kroger's or any other grocery store, as they are bigger, fresher (duh) and come out great fried. Canned oysters are usually too small, too cooked and chalky.
The only thing that truly freaks me out about imported fish from China was when they discovered a lot of those farms were feeding the fish raw sewage and human feces. Not all of them, but, I mean, do you REALLY want to take that chance that your fish came from that one farm? Price is great, but you get what you pay for.
-_- they dont feed the fish sewage, they RAISE them in sewage. The fish are basically breathing it in...filtering through their gills. Big difference than eating.
Ekone sells smoked oysters in vacuum pack also, no oil at all. Marvelous. The fresh ones are the best on the planet, the oysters are grown in the water in hanging cages as opposed to resting on the mud.
$35.00 for three cans of something like that isn't that shocking I have spent way more on nostalgic and other hard to get food items on Amazon I even ordered Alligator meat for $60.00 a piece
Doesn't taste like chicken at all. It takes the flavor of the seasoning, if you dont season it, its pretty damn bland. I suppose if you bread it and fry it just like you would chicken, it might taste like chicken. But for the most part, its pretty neutral and bland.
Oyster recipe: take some white bread and cut each slice into 9 pieces, plop your oysters on top and place them on a baking pan. Cook at low heat for 2 minutes and remove from oven, and put your choice of condiments or toppings, preferably mustard. Try it out!
Never knowingly going to buy Chinese communists products, Taiwanese another story. No more Hong Kong products either since they got enveloped by the CCP. The CCP is the most mortal of our adversaries in The Constitutional Republic of the United States of America Not the imposter CCP controlled Gov't we got forced upon us by the Evil politicians who need to be hung for treason and leftists, they want to destroy us by infiltration of course they can't win militarily.
I love trying exotic food's. When they are done right they can be an amazing experience. A few years ago I had the opportunity to try Caviar....now mind you I am an old school fisher woman and look upon it as stinky fish bait! Well we were at a top rated restaurant in Little Rock dining al fresco...wonderful place! On the menu they had caviar. My husband and I looked at each other and in tandem were like...hey why not! Mind you not cheap! So they brought us a beautiful tray with mother of pearl spoons, lemon, diced chives,
So had to continue here. We created amazing little bites and indulged to our hearts delight. OMG! Put a little crème fresh on cracker, a dollop of caviar, sprinkle of chives and squirt of lemon...savor slowly enjoying each flavor and texture to our hearts desire...caviar is amazing and 2nd to none! Now we're hooked and know nothing about this amazing delicacy. Please educate us! What is best for the price, best taste, different types of roe...please help!!
It's just unfortunate that in the past quality food used to be fairly cheap, now they've started bringing in this Chinese crap and using it as a justification for jacking up the prices on what was once normal food.
The last time I had an oyster in my mouth, it was raw and came from the ones inside a chute we were made to go through on the flight deck of my ship during a crossing the line ceremony back in 1979. I've never been able to eat them again. It was scarred by the experience. But, your review of these has given me food for thought....
U.S Navy , It's an initiation rite for " PollyWogs " when crossing the Equator , My dad went thru the same initiation . As stated the " chute " was garbage chute while wearing tutu's and makeup etc .. I have Pic slides of the process .. Lol
Bob Smith I remember doing it on a liner - the 'Windsor Castle' in 1975 when emigrating to the UK from South Africa. My parents had moved to South Africa 8 years previously (from Scotland), then I arrived followed by my brother. I was 4 years old when we 'crossed the line' and it's probably my strongest childhood memory, for all the wrong reasons - adults in make-up, drunk, King Neptune, fireworks - way too much madness for my young mind. Damaged me for years😄. Years later I explained to my Mum that I kept having this recollection of a 'nightmarish' vision of a bearded man with a trident, music, shouting and men in make-up - she had to explain what I was remembering😄
This answered my "green inside" comment on the other video. I don't remember eating oysters that looked green, but I ate them at a resturant and ate the whole thing rather than biting it in half.
OK, Larry... the reason there was 1.5 servings/can in the PLAIN variety and 1 serving/can in the LEMON & PEPPER variety is that the nutritional fact label from the website was done in the OLD FDA FORMAT for PLAIN and in the NEW FDA FORMAT for LEMON & PEPPER. The new format, which I do believe will be mandatory for every manufacturer and distributor sometime in '18, is the one where the CALORIES are in a LARGER TYPE and include new stuff, like ADDED SUGARS, SPECIFIC AMOUNTS OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS, not just %'s and LARGER STANDARDIZED SERVING SIZES (as an example, carbonated soft drinks' serving size is now usually 12oz., but smaller sizes than that are 1 serving / package and larger sizes are also 1 serving / package up to 20oz). Serving size will now vary per the product category, but are standardized within the category.
@@syxepop Important to point out that they are still allowed huge leeway in rounding, both in the serving size vs tested size and serving size vs servings per can, and then compounded by rounding of the actual analysis results. This is how non-stick spray oil can claim 0g fat even though it is literally 99% pure fat(plus a dash of stabilizer and emulsifiers). IE soup labeled "lean" may have the same 1.5 servings per can as the regular soup but because they stretch the limits of rounding the actual tested serving size is 10% smaller, then because they can round off the grams they can go from 2.6(rounded 3) to 2.4(rounded 2) and claim 33% less fat (or whatever nutrient) even though the actual recipe could be identical. Similar in the very same can they may have gone from 7.4 to 6.6g of protein (11% drop) but both are labeled 7g
You should review the Jimmy Dean Griddle Cake breakfast sausage sandwiches. I saw a single one at Family Dollar for $1.00 and I would guess Dollar Tree might also carry the single ones.
Love this channel Man!! And the music takes me back to when I was younger and the original Unsolved Mystery tv show With Robert Stack was on!!! Lol 😂 big 👍
I don't expect you'll ever come to Korea, but if one day you do, you really have to try oysters in here. They are quite accessible so you can try fire roasted oysters which is alive until it goes up to a grill. Also, not as expensive as In there. Anyway, huge like from korea! Really do enjoying your channel 😆
Just a FYI. I bought a pack of smoked oysters from a Kroger store, there house brand (Kroger) and surprise it is from the republic of Korea not China. It was very tasty and good smoke flavor.
Napolean canned smoked oysters are an American product I believe. They are located in Seattle, Wa, but I couldn't tell from their website if they are american oysters or ?. I like the large variety, they have small and medium also. They are competitively priced at about $3/can. Same as Chicken o Sea, etc. around here. They are my favorite. Uniformly large in size, they have a firm, but creamy texture, and are delicious and have never let me down. I haven't tried the ones that you review here. Kinda pricey. If you try the Napolean, and tell me the ones you reviewed here are way better, I'll give them a try. Love your reviews
Scottish seafood is fantastic. We buy oysters from the fishmonger with butter discs. And two full adult female blue lobsters is £18, but well worth it. Scotlands inner cities even has a great abundance of game too. Grouse, pheasant etc..
I wholeheartedly share your aversion to Chinese oysters. Kroger has a privately branded Korean produced oyster that is pretty good. The best canned smoked oysters I have ever had are St Jeans from Canada.
I just opened a can of the Ekone smoked originals they are the best smoked oysters I've ever had. I purchased a few of their originals , the BBQ and the habanero. I'll be ordering more!
Wasn't able to leave a post at your first canned oyster video, but I laughed hard when you spit the "off" oyster across the yard. I'm afraid similar experiences over the years has made me less adventurous than I once was (me + urchin + heat/time= baby poop) I find all your videos interesting and easy to listen to and watch. Too bad all high schools don't teach these practical skills, everybody graduating from HS should have home-ec, shop, and auto shop. Too many families raised on McD's when they could have had real food if they know where to look and how to shop.
I bought a sampler pack of the Ekone smoked oysters after viewing this video. Its worth the extra expense, they are so much better than the "made in China" flat cans sold at DG , FD, and DT. Those Chinese oysters are better than none at all, but do yourself a favor and giv e the American oysters a try. Kudos to Wolfe for turning me on to American canned seafood.
Something about our Pacific Northwest and seafood... Much akin to American Tuna, which I now keep stocked on the shelf by the dozen, in lieu of any other tuna brands, which I no longer buy.. If I was into oysters, I'd jump all over these! It's a relief to know that there *are* people in the US, growing and producing quality seafood. What's annoying is that they can be so hard to track down.
Walmart among other places sell Crown Prince smoked oysters in the red box (it's got to be the red box) those are delicious and chewy and around $2 and has a lot less sodium than these, and their cans are BPA free.
Hey Wolfe. I know Dollar Tree and Walmart are like playgrounds for you, but could you take a look at a few more gas station foodstuffs? Some of those things are garbage, but there are a few gems among those places.
I don't know what you are tasting, but I love Bumble Bee smoked oysters. To me they are perfect! I taste nothing metallic about them. They have a VERY appetizing texture.
