We started yesterday by making canned apples from 2 bags of donated apples. I saved the peels and cores. Today, we will take those peels and make apple jelly. We got 5 half-pints and 1 pint of jelly.

I really enjoyed watching your video, although my canning days are far behind me. You have such a sweet and grateful spirit that comes right through the camera. I also love how you don't waste a drop, holding that heavy pot with one hand and scraping the last little bit out. That's what I did too. Waste not, want not. God bless.

This video was created 3 years ago but I just came across it tonight. I love hearing about frugal methods. I was raised to use as much as you can so there wasn't waste. Your friend that took you under her wing would be so proud of you. Here you are teaching other people how to can devine food.

It might seem like no big deal to you but stealing the water from the preheated jars to use on your lids is damn genius to me. I’m a new canner and it’s a whole new world. Thank you!

Oh my goodness, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!!!! Im a 56 year old lawyer who just started canning during this pandemic, because I didn’t have the time before now. I have found something that completely soothes and calms me body mind and spirit. Most of my ancestors have passed on taking their knowledge with them. I greatly appreciate your instruction!!! God bless you. Looking forward to learning more and preserving more of what He has blessed me with! #GoodSteward

I really enjoyed your memory of your friend. Funny how something as simple as a canning jar will bring back cherished memories. I also really liked how you signed off reminding everyone to pray for our country. It's so very important that we do pray for our country. Guess what I have been doing all day? I got a really good deal on a bushel of apples so I have been dehydrating apples and making applesauce today and will be making apple jelly tomorrow from my peels and cores. I haven't even made a big dent in my apples yet! That's more apples than I really expected. I am going to be so busy this weekend and the beginning of the week. I am counting my blessings being able to learn how to do all of this canning at 60 years old!

I got the link from Doug and Stacey too!. Your instructions are very good. My Mom used to make jelly with peelings. But she must have squeezed that pillow case because her jelly was very textured, which I really liked, and also the jelly was very dark, not light or clear. I grew up with the "waste not, want not" philosophy too. I was the youngest of seven and my kitchen duties usually was the peeling, go-fer, and cleanup detail. An older sister actually helped Mom with the canning. ..I can relate to these two on several levels. I also have a cerebral palsied child. He is now 56 years old and totally bed-bound. He was born laughing and still looks for something to laugh about every day. Love, Prayers, Blessings....

@2ladyhomesteadershodge898
@2ladyhomesteadershodge898 6 лет назад
gravelroad11 Hey, congratulations on giving this technique a try. Here's a tip: Place a saucer in the freezer. Take a small not of the jelly and place it on the frozen saucer. Put the saucer back in the freezer for about 5 minutes. Check to see if the jelly is thick enough. If not, keep boiling a bit and then, retest. The good news is now you have Apple syrup for pancakes, French toast, etc. Hope this helps! God Bless, Vivian Ann

Ok it's me again I have a question for you, I'm not sure if you'll know but I can't figure this out. I also use tattler lids and I try to avoid water bath canning and usually use my pressure canner for everything because way to many times when I water bath I have water seep into my jars. They will actually seal but I opened one of my plum jams because I noticed it happened to a few and yup an inch or so of water on the top. So u drained it off, the jam underneath was ok but I now have an unsealed jar or a few if I were to open all the ones that looked like they had water in them. Any thoughts or ideas on why this might be happening? I noticed you sometimes use the tattlers and I wondered if you ever had this happen. Thanks again Deena
@verngib9041
@verngib9041 4 года назад
lily rose im going to assume that the rings were not tight enough. The rings are finger tight. So make them snug. I have not had that happen so im just guessing. You probably already know to throw the contents of the unsealed jar away!!! If you find a jar has not sealed in the 24 hours then you can put in fridge or pit back in water bath. You may be interested in the stem canner. I just heard about themself and i will say they are very cool. Do your research!!!! Happy canning!!!!!

@2ladyhomesteadershodge898 4 года назад
No, so sorry. The sugar works together with the pectin from the peels to make the jelly thick. There are prepared pectin (like SureJell) that can be used with less sugar. God Bless. Vivian Ann on the side of the mountain in northeast Tennessee

Darlene’s garden channel, there is a pectin on the ,market that is activated by calcium, it sugar. You can add it to jellies and jams with artificial sugar, or juice, or none at all. It is called Pomona’s Universal Pectin. In my area (Ky) I can only get it one store so I usually buy it through amazon.

Hi, I tried to can apple peels and cores and the syrup reached 220 degrees but the apple syrup did not gel. I used Gala apples peels and cores. What did I do wrong. I never had this problem before. Is it the type of apple. Oh, I did not use pectin. Thanks.
@2ladyhomesteadershodge898
@2ladyhomesteadershodge898 4 года назад
I am sorry you had problems. The peels create their own pectin. The sugar ratio may have been off. The pectin needs the sugar to thicken the mixture. The syrup you made would be quite tasty over pancakes. Vivian Ann on the side of the mountain in northeast Tennessee
