Have to say I love my Sunday night dose of you and your family Jessica. I have recently started a morning stroll with a tea watering the garden. Thank you for bringing such a simple but really calming start to my day.
"simple things in your life can teach your kids about how the world works" "science is all around us". Yes mam! Love this so much and I try and encourage other mommas with that as well
Great video Jessica. I don’t think I have ever had mulberries before, they look delicious. And the dry ice experiment is now a must do in my house, how cool! Thanks for taking the time to bring us along. I am always encouraged by your videos.
I appreciate how your children are involved in everyday chores, and science/engineering activities around the homestead. You are quite resourceful! From a STEM momma/teacher, your comment about science being all around us made my heart so happy!!
Good morning Jessica. You look beautiful and I pray you and baby are well. Can you please do a video series on pregnancy/labor/delivery? I'd love videos on pregnancy during your 40's, your previous labor/delivery stories, as well as what you have planned for your next baby (ex. home birth, hospital birth). Thank you!
I love pomonas! This week we took their blueberry rhubarb recipe and turned it into a mulberry rhubarb recipe. It is so good! If you have more mulberries and rhubarb I highly suggest trying it.
Really enjoyed watching this video and seeing your children so involved with everything on the homestead. They are truly living a beautiful life and learning so so much.
So glad you guys do ok through the storms we had last week. I was praying for all the farmers during the storms thurs with the large hail. Garden & family are both amazing. Thanks for sharing about the sun oven. Enjoy the cooler days before our next round of hot weather. God bless.
I love walking your garden. And I believe the lettuce will come back. Sometimes you can get 2 or 3 cuttings off lettuce. And your children are beautiful. And so very helpful. You and Adam had both been very blessed. I bless you all and keep safe.
Your garden is coming along great. I'm still struggling with getting my tomatoes to bloom. Jelly looks delicious along with the bread. Thank you for sharing your day.
Awww so sweet seeing family working together it brings happy tears to my eyes remember when I was younger working in the yard with my siblings, mother, grandmother, and a great grandmother. I do work in the yard now my son
I've used Pomona for several years now and never realised they had a recipe book. I've just gone off the leaflet with minimal instructions they send along the package :)
Everything is so exciting to watch grow. That was a cool way to harvest mulberries. I'm waiting on my sun oven to arrive but I've been using a friend's oven and I had to have one. I love the thought of being able to use it year-round here in Florida. But they do claim to be able to cook in it in the snow as well. I guess it's all about those UV rays. No wonder I burn so easily. LOL, It sounds like you are feeling better. You are in my prayers, God Bless, Cathy
What a wonderful calming way to start my day! Thank you for sharing your beautiful family with us. Learning so much for you as I start a little suburban homestead. Have a blessed day!❤️🙏🏼
I had problems with rabbits also. I use a deer and rabbit repellent. Just spray it around the edge your garden or raised beds. It worked. They dont like the smell. I cant remember the brand but i found it on amazon
Concerning lettuce harvest, I have found it helpful to just harvest a few of the outer leaves of a number of plants at their base as they come to size, rather than cutting whole heads. You don't have to wait for a full head to grow, nor for a full one to regrow before harvesting. Then there is a steady supply of leaves from the bed and all plants at same stage in growth.
I have a very, very old mulberry tree on my property that I make jam with. There is just something so yummy about mulberries. Since they tend to be a little tart and a lot less juicy I tend to make a combo jam. This winter I did Mulberry Strawberry with some frozen berries. Since my berries aren't ripe yet, I plan to do a Raspberry Mulberry jam The combo of fruits is so yummy and with two different berries it is just added nutrients! For canners, there is a low/no sugar powdered pectin by Ball that is amazing. I have a lot of diabetics in my family so was excited to find it, tho I tend to use just regular Ball pectin with low sugar too. Something about letting the fruit speak for itself just seems right. Glad to see you are doing well, Jessica!
What a wonderful video. I love your videos with your narrative. Your voice is calming and a piece of serenity to me. You have such a beautiful family, home, and tradition’s. It’s too bad that more American families couldn’t slow down and truly enjoy life and the Lord as your family does. God bless you and your family. I hope you have an abundance of harvest for your family. Thank you for sharing. It’s always wonderful to watch your videos. I went strawberry picking yesterday and made jam. I ended up with 21 1/2 pints.
Your garden is looking beautiful! I understand your frustration with the little cabbage worms. Last year was the first year i was able to actually harvest cabbages. I had seen a video where they used PVC pipe to make a small hoop house with their raised bed and put floating row cover over it. We used clothes pins to attach the row cover to the metal beds and used plastic clamps they sell on amazon to hold the row cover to the pipes. It looked like a little wagon train when finished. NO WORMS! I was dancing around my garden I was so happy to get a huge cabbage crop. Did it again this year and we will hopefully get the same result. I am in awe of all your garlic scapes! YUM
I love the way your kids help with all the chores, they really seem to enjoy their work. That just shows how well you and your husband are teaching and loving them. In these times it’s such a blessing to see a family that work together and also all the love. It reminds me so much growing up with my grandparents. May God bless you your new baby and all your family ❤
Definitely! Thankfully two of our trees hang over the chicken run, so what falls is eaten. We find that the wild birds and other critters eat a lot of what falls on the ground.
I second using a fine mesh row cover for your brassicas.I simply use rocks to keep the cover down and uncover only to harvest whenever I need to.I've had great results doing this for me. I can buy the fabric and hoops at a local produce supplier, but since you have raised beds you may not need the hoops. I learn so much from your homestead and I want to thank you for sharing your life with us!
Beautiful video thank you for sharing. A little trick I learned from Charles Dowding( no dig market gardener from England); pick just the outer leaves of each lettuce head. Do this every 2nd or 3rd day, the next out leaves will have grown big enough to pick. This way You will get weeks of harvest from one head! Provided they dont bolt. No need to succesion sow. Happy Gardening and God bless from Ireland!
Thank you for the encouragement and bringing your kids in the picture when it comes to gardening. We are in the modern world of technology and kids rarely gets involved outdoors nowadays. I have been so inspired with all your videos.
Our mulberry trees in Indiana are loaded this year as well! I questioned for a second if it was a bi-annual plant because we hardly had any last year haha! Really enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for sharing :)
Have you considered mulching your garden beds? I live in Australia, heat is a big struggle here,l need to mulch everything ,pots too,it saves me a lot of water and time watering the garden, and it protects the soil too. So much going on at your place! You are blessed 💕
I used Pomona's Pectin the other day for the first time and my blueberry/strawberry/blackberry jam turned out great and with very little sugar! I didn't know Mulberry were actually trees, I thought they were a bush like blueberries. Thanks for showing us your morning routine, you guys are hard workers.
For the cabbage moths and worms. I read a 1966 organic gardening book that said to mix flour and salt and spread on the plants early in the morning while the dew is on. This is what all the amish communities do around me. Love your channel!!
We planted a small garden for the first time this year. We learned all a out cucumber beetles and flea beetles. Our zucchini plants all died because they were infested with grubs eating away at the inside of the stems. Do you have any suggestions for that?
Hey Jessica I have a for you? I have tried to search for lime to use so we can water glass our eggs...we haven't had any success. I was wondering where you bought yours and the correct spelling, if I'm spelling it wrong😀
The title of this video gives me a little anxiety! 🥴 I’m 30 weeks pregnant and am thinking there’s no way I’m going to be able to can and preserve as much as I did last year…as much as I want to!! Taking it one day at a time!
Thank you for another great video! I have never seen a sun oven before, how neat! I am seriously considering one because I also dont like to turn on the oven in the summer.
I have a mulberry tree in my backyard also, but it is very tall and grows into the electrical wires between the yards, so the electric company comes around every few years and trims the branches. Now the tree resembles a stalk of broccoli, only having the very tallest branches remaining but much too tall to harvest any berries. The birds are the lucky ones to benefit from the fruit. I enjoyed seeing how your garden is growing and the joy your entire family takes in watching and working together, growing with the garden. Thank you for sharing.
Good Morning Jessica👋👋👋 I hope you’re feeling well on this beautiful Sunday morning🙏 To all who may be reading this I hope you all have a peaceful, blessed and enjoyable day celebrating the men in your lives who’ve made great impressions on your souls and have guided you to be all you can be in other’s lives too. Happy Father’s Day to all those who identify as being a father, I wish you all peace and love♥️💫✨👼🏻✨💫♥️
We harvest the mulberries similar to you. We lay a tarp down under the tree and we get a very long pole and are able to shake around the higher branches with the pole. You can get about 6lb of berries this way. Also, I just learned that the green coriander pods are edible and delicious. It kind of makes up for the cilantro bolting and not being able to harvest any leaves. Fortunately you get plenty of seeds to be able to eat some fresh green ones while leaving plenty to dry.
I think that's awesome & all kids should learn these values about life homeschooled or not, kids now a days take everything way too much for granted & will have a rude awakening when things go down. I wish parents would think of this & realize the importance of survival for their children, bravo to those who are already showing the younger generation how important it is to know how things work to survive & not depend on stores for everything. I love you got a shot of the morning dove in her nest
We have true white mulberries that stay white even when ripe. One of our white mulberry trees is enormous, with a trunk 2-3 feet in diameter. We also have lots of black mulberries, as well as hybrids of the two. So yummy!
I just checked out about those Forjars lids. Wow! They're half the price of what I pay in the store! I will definitely order some since you've said they seal no problem! Thanks!
Your children are so fortunate to be learning all those life skills! Things they would never learn in public school! I think the Sun Oven is so cool! I would love to have one someday! Thanks for Sharing your family and livelihood ! I have learned so much from watching you! 😍
Hello Jessica and Adam and family. How are you feeling Jessica I haven't seen your posts since you first announced your pregnancy as I have had some health issues and been in and out of the hospital. I'm glad to finally get to see your channel again. God Bless you and Adam and family from a viewer in Toronto Ontario Canada
Seriously glad you mentioned the sun oven. I think it is one of the best things to have in our homestead arsenals, especially since we are being warned about blackouts.
Because I am making a RU-vid video and trying to be sensitive to other people and how words make them feel. We typically use the word butchering here at home, but processing is more all encompassing. The PROCESS includes more than just the butchering. We also have to part out the birds, package what we want to freeze, and can the rest. It's a long PROCESS.
I love seeing all the things that you all accomplish in a day. Looks like a fabulous day. However I would add a little moveable air conditioner. Jessica you do too much in a day, and being pregnant on top of that, your body needs to be cool.
What a wonderful education you are giving your children, Jessica. They are growing up on a little patch of God's paradise and you are a fantastic, nurturing mama xx
New here. I love the ways you get your kids involved. I think it's so important. My boys are learning to can. This is my youngest 1 year helping can. God bless you and your family
Mom, there is a lesson about cooking out doors using a pizza box, aluminum foil and something else to cook. Of course you can make your own box. Love the science!🤗🤗
Do you let your under one year olds eat canned food? I keep hearing that it’s not okay but I can’t imagine always fixing something different for them if you use canned food for almost every meal. Does this only apply to non acidic foods?
I have one or two failures with forjars. I just finished processing 12 pints chunk chickens and had one failure. Their not “perfect “ but soooo much better than Ball
Oh, no. That stinks. These have been the most consistent lids for me. I find I always end up with random failures with other brands. Maybe it's just been luck for me so far.
Cbass, please reach out to us(if you have Instagram- text us there), we have amazing customer service, and we will be happy to help you to resolve this situation. Sad that this is happened to you, but we trying so hard to make the quality of the lids as best as possible 🙏🏼 Thank you for your comment.
@@forjars Oh no….I’m not complaining at all!! It’s just I do have a failure here and their. Nothing like Ball at all. Actually, I just finished processing a mix of 14 pints of chicken and beef chunks. ALL sealed. I don’t do anything different, so their ya go! But if it continues, I sure will ForJars. I don’t expect “perfection”, I’m very, very pleased with your product. Btw…I always examine my failed jars. I must say I examine everything before I start processing. No cracks, chips etc in the failed jars. So, it happens. Please don’t think I’m complaining, I’m not at all. And you have fantastic customer service. You helped me order when my iPad would not let me order myself. Your chat is great!! I will never go back to Ball…never. I use those for vacuum sealing and storage. So, I’m very pleased with your products and will continue to use them. Idk…I just think it happens, it does to me. But I’m a very happy customer!! And thank you so much reaching out to me….♥️
Do you know if the mulberry trees you have are all wild? I have SEVERAL on my property, but believe one is the white. I didn’t know if they grew wild also?
I'm learning so much from you. Thank you. I too live in north west Ohio in Bloomdale. I'm so going to purchase a sun oven. I never knew that about garlic eighter. Many blessings.
I live on a dairy farm in south Africa with my husband and 2 boys. Our dairy cows get slaughtered frequently by people living in rural communities around us. On Thursday we had 1 of our cows slaughtered but the only bits they took was eyebrow, teets from the udder and parts of the vulva. It is used by the rural communities as mootie, traditional medicine.
I believe you don't have air conditioning but do you stay pretty cool? Its been hot here in the south and when that humidity gets high it is so sticky. You have such beautiful children. I love your videos and your kindness just shows. Thank you
I really enjoy your videos. You explain everything so well. I love how you show how to store your harvest, and also how you use your stored food. So many people don't show that side. I learn so much from you!
They have about 1.5 acres. We do have to provide hay through winter, but they have plenty of pasture in summer. We have the land divided into two pastures and we rotate them.
How do you store your fresh bread without a bread box? I’ve just started making bread and I wrap it in seran wrap but that doesn’t seem like the best way to keep bread fresh.
I slice, put in bread bags, and freeze mine right away and use from the freezer as needed. It separates nicely and you can remove only a slice or 2 at a time.
You need row covers over your brassicas - early in this vid we saw a cabbage moth flitting among your plants and thought, "Uh-oh - caterpillars in your future!"
I just found your channel yesterday and I'm enjoying looking through your video's. You have a lovely family and homestead. Now I'm on to the next video lol
