Cannondale Habit 2 - This hardtail from Cannondale was recently announced. Today we take it for a ride to see what it's all about. I love reviewing bikes under $1500, and this one has some great features for the price. Which features are your favorite? What would you upgrade? Do bikes in this price range appeal to you?

If you benefitted from this video, consider supporting my work using the links above. None of my reviews are sponsored and I rely on my patrons and subscribers here to keep this channel going. I feel so fortunate to have felt well enough to ride for an hour and review this bike. I am nowhere near recovered though. It has taken over 2 weeks to recover from this 1-hour ride, and I'm still spending most of the day in bed. I appreciate the love and support through this health battle. For more details about my condition and my recovery, head over to patreon, where I share my recovery progress.

I've been watching your reviews for a long time. I love your videos. I just bought this same cannondale. I've had a lot of bikes from pivot switchblade, cannondale jekyll, revel ranger, and my newest the yeti SB120. I can say with confidence I love riding the habit Ht. I plan to upgrade the fork to the lyric or fox 34. Definitely need to upgrade the hubs or the complete wheels. Great review 👏

I just got the HT-3, and I am not an experienced rider, but I am older and my back requires a more upright position, I got an adjustable stem and got the handlebar a bit higher. Your comment on the short travel on the dropper is quite valid, but I was stoked to get a dropper at all for the price. I adjusted the seat as far back as I could. Works for me for now, but I feel confident that it is a platform for upgrades when I need it. Thank you for a great review.

Thanks for getting this ride review out! After learning the other geo points of your other bikes this one is not first pick. But it is so interesting at what it does well. Great discussion on the two build options and upgrade list. I saw the entry level build for $999 on sale. I say get the build you rode, change to Maxxis Dissectors, get a year out of the fork……. Oh shoot, that turquoise color in the cheaper one is sweet. Either one looks like a great bike to build upon. Absolutely this needed to be tested and not just the specs skimmed over. I bought my first mtb in 1983, later maybe in 1996 I remember seeing these bikes at Mikes bikes that were Cannondale mtb with a mono shock thing. I was having kids then so they were out of my price point but they seemed like cutting edge technology.

Great video Steve. I used to own a Cannondale F1000 in the 1990’s. It was super lightweight but man those big fat tubes and that weird Headshock made for a stiff ride. Their bikes seem to be much better now and it’s great that they are making a trail bike now versus just a XC racer.

Also to note, I also do think about 130MM is the perfect suspension for HT, to not turn into a giant lever... Even though I run a 160 on my Torrent, I got a custom tune (spacers/oil/valving) such that it is a highly progressive fork, so the last 30MMs are only there as a just in case and I never end up sitting deep in the travel and nose diving.

Hey Steve, I’m new to the Chanel, I’ve bought the Habit HT2 in kaki color! I like it so far, my rear derailleur seems to grab the chain when I stop pedaling, which is annoying but apart from that, the bike rides well. Why is $1500 beginner? Who are the $600 bikes for then?
@sethrich5998
@sethrich5998 2 месяца назад
@@Jose-sy1jeI’d argue $1500 is about the price point for a serious beginner, with intent to get really into the hobby. The sub $1000 bikes are for an occasional rider, not planning to upgrade or grow skill beyond beginner level trails. Nothing wrong with either type, but one is upgradable as you progress and the other requires buying a new bike if you get more serious into the hobby. There’s a place for both, and wouldn’t look down on anyone for riding what they can afford.

I spent a long time looking for an upgrade from my cheap walmart bike and ended up going with the habit ht 3. This video really helped decide it for me. This bike handles very well on all the rocky and steep sections that the Texas hill country has. Only problem I’ve found is that my wrists are hurting after I ride. That probably will be solved by a fork upgrade, a bar with a bit more rise, and better technique lol. Otherwise, its been great!

Personally I always buy “frame only” and custom build my bikes from my nice parts and new parts that I choose for the build. With that said, obviously the frame is very important and I love your detailed reviews. I think many people disregard the fact that a hardtail is amazing and worth building up custom because you can build it for your personal needs and trails you often ride. Personally, I also consider myself a weight weenie to a point. I weigh 150 and I don’t need overly built re-enforced frames with gussets and other stuff. I don’t see the need for 35mm stem/bars when 31.8 works great and offers more comfort. Anyway, I’m rambling, sorry. Gotta go ride now!

I've been looking at a lot of hardtails the last week or so online (for my wife). Currently off work with a fractured 5th metatarsal so a lot of time on my hands. You are so right about the number of RU-vid vids that say they are reviewing bikes only for them to be obviously just reading off a spec sheet. Really appreciate what you do. Marin Team 1 or 2 or Trek Roscoe 9 in the running so far.
@blacktrucksfly

I have a marin team 1 and totally love it for what it is. Definitely more light trail xc but very capable. Decent components for the price and all i have added is a Dropper post. I use it for riding around the LA area mountains and trails similar to the one ridden in this review, perfect for these trails. Also great for riding around town or at the beach due to its XC roots. If you arent planning on going down hill as much and more of a trail rider then id recommend it!

@blacktrucksfly Thank you so much. My wife currently rides a carbon gravel bike with 650b 47mm tyres. But after hiring mountain bikes while on holiday in the Sierra nevada mountains Spain a couple of months ago she really enjoyed the extra comfort on the rough stuff.
@blacktrucksfly
@blacktrucksfly 8 месяцев назад
@@Ecoroof1986 If she is coming from a gravel bike and looking for more comfort for that style of more rough gravel trail riding, i would go with the team marin. This cannondale is much more oriented for descending and downhill rides as it is very slack and has very wide slow rolling aggressive tires. It will feel extremely sluggish on anything not downhill. I used to have a Canyon Stoic which is very similar to the cannondale and it was great fun on mountain descents but incredibly hard work and sluggish on flats and climbs. Id rather take a full suspension then a downhill focused hard tail... just preference. Thats why i switched the canyon for the marin

I bought a Roscoe 9 a few months ago and while it's ridiculously comfortable, and a babysitter of a bike it would probably be overkill for mainly XC. It wouldn't be *my* first choice for that at least. Learning new skills, it's been GREAT, it's a very forgiving platform.

Had my new bike choice whittled down to two options - this or the Norco Fluid HT. Went with the Norco because of a Shimano Deore 12 speed drivetrain. The head angle is a tad steeper and the fork is 120mm but a way better deal imo. The frame is sweet, the cable routing has no cheap bits and the rest of the bike is specced out great. And my LBS assembled it perfectly.

Sometimes I wonder, how much extra manufacturing cost is really involved to make a 5° hub vs. a 10° hub. They need to work this out, because even a lot of more expensive bikes have terrible hubs. It's a huge pain to swap out a hub. Basically the most difficult part to replace on a bike.

My first mountain bike was a Cannondale hard tail & was only $1000 brand new......... in 1986. I bent the rigid fork in 3 days & cracked the frame in 3 months....... my how far we have come.

hi thanks for the video - i have a question about sizing..which size frame do you have and what is your height? I'm 6ft and inbetween a L and an XL and not sure which size to go for!

Hope you're doing well? Would be nice if Cannondale came out with an HT1 build with a Marzocchi Fork and a 1x12 Deore drivetrain. Which is what I consider a solid base build. Some great hardtails have recently dropped---Transition TransAm and Orbea Laufey. Stay well, my friend.

I bought the HT 3 on sale for $1,000 after tax as a beginner all-rounder, just getting into MTB. I haven't put as much time into riding yet as I would like but it's been a solid bike where it feels like I am the limiting factor in its performance.So far, I've been happy with the coil fork, dropper, and everything else as a beginning for basic trail rides and just starting out. For $1,000, I couldn't find anything else that fit the bill on specs and quality and I am quite happy with my purchase.

I picked up this bike in August when REI had the ht2 on sale for $1,159.00. I swapped the Judy for a Marzocchi Z2 and put on a set of Hunt Trail Wides I had. The bike has been great. Mostly flat flow trails here in southwest Michigan. The HT3 would have been a better deal but wasn't available at the time of the sale. The headset and the crank spindle had no grease so check everything over if you purchase one.

Yeah, assembly is not their strong suit. Good call to doh or check and grease everything.

I too picked up a ht 2 on sale at REI. Thanks for the review Steve and the comments re checking for grease. I will do that soon. Haven’t ridden it much but definitely plan to do so. Thanks again.

So REI always has their bike sale in August? Why would the HT3 have been the better deal if it's a coil fork?

@@Jose-sy1jeHonestly, I haven’t been able to take it off pavement since I bought it. Thankfully REI has a great return policy. NOT saying I’m just panning on retuning it, just safe keeping for now. And I don’t know when they have their sales. Im keeping my eyes open for a bike for the wife.

Hi, I'm interested in this bike. I've currently got a 2016 whyte 901 which I love but it's also the only mtb I've ever owned. I'm fairly new and not a super serious rider, would this bike be worth the upgrade or am I just better with what I have

Nice review Steve! It bothers me when people see nothing wrong with having dogs off leash on trail, the last thing i want is to crash into a poor dog. Owners need to take better responsibility and respect the trail rules. Not to mention, you wont notice your pup taking a poop on the trail while your running ahead...

Check your actual dropper length. I bought a medium Habit HT 2 for my wife, and the dropper post was only 100mm. Perhaps yours is only 100mm too??

It depends on the fork. i didnt treat that. Unfortunately, I don't feel like this fork is special enough to keep, so id be replacing it anyway.

Any idea whether the Habit HT 1 will be released here in the US? It's been available in Europe for a good while now, as far as I can tell. Apparently it comes with a 150 or 170mm dropper (medium and large+), 35mm air fork, and deore drivetrain, which would be reason enough for me to just buy that spec instead of buying the 2 and upgrading. Let me give you my dang money, Cannondale 😩

Whoever assembled that, maybe he's not just paid to do it properly.

@phil5073 very possible, or perhaps he's not trained well. It shouldn't cost more to route the cables properly. Perhaps that's the price we pay for trying to squeeze every bit of performance out of a limited budget. Most people won't pay $300 more for a bike assembled by someone with expertise.
