I decided to give my 13 ft. Mohawk canoe a makeover! This video is 50% instructional and 50% just letting you know what I have been up to. Royalex is becoming extinct but the process could be applied to a kayak or other boat that is not made of metal. Thanks for watching! - Clint

This is a very nice and timely video...THANKS!!...I have a solo13 royalite that is 25 years old...the royalex looks like it will last forever if you take care of it. I haven't considered painting yet...but might in the future....I have found that Gflex epoxy binds to the hull incredibly well for those not sure about the JBWeld...and as far as krylon fading....I painted my old town royalex with krylon 3 years ago...hasn't faded yet....so I wont hesitate to use it if I do paint my Mohawk...and I agree...this canoe is my favorite of anything I own. 13 feet...32 pounds...and glides through the water.

The right tool makes life a lot easier, so a claw hammer for a scraper is strange. You are dead nuts right about 220 grit paper on a random orbit sander. Real boat paint from companies like Pettit or Interlux will look a lot better , last longer and add value to your boat. If you are going to all the trouble to sand and prep the hull, you don't want rattle can paint fading in a year or so. One quart will do a whole canoe with a bit left over. Heat gun will smooth out the wrinkles in the keel guard and make it lay flat without cutting it. Heating the keel guard actually makes it stick better as well.

How has the paint held up?

Made the video 5 months ago and taken the canoe out many times (coastal & inland). Paint is holding great! A few scrapes and nicks on the underside but that’s just about unavoidable with a canoe. Very pleased.

I recently bought a 32 year old Royalex canoe (Mowhawk Challenger 14' solo) that has spent a lot of time out in the sun. There was a lot of oxidation damage to the outer ABS layer. I didn't want to paint it since once you paint something you have to continually paint it. I think I found the best way to refinish it. I wet sanded it with 440grit wet/dry paper by hand and then with 1000grit. It was easy and removed all the oxidation and was smooth as a baby's butt. I went over it with 2 layers of Armorall letting that sink in a cure nicely and then a top layer of 303 UV protectant. It looks almost new.

I've searched dozens of royalex "repair" videos on RU-vid and yours is the one that makes the most sense. I just inherited (Aug 14, 2020) a Mohawk Intrepid 16 that's in decent shape but has what looks like the same gouges and dings that yours had. Thanks for recommending the JB water weld. I just have one question however. Is there a reason you chose Krylon over Rust-Oleum? Excellent video! I'm looking forward to getting started on my refurbished.

chris vincent glad my video was helpful. As far as the paint goes, I read some “paddling forums” online and most people recommended the Krylon Fusion. Here is a link to one of those forums forums.paddling.com/t/painting-royalex/56918

@@ExploreYourLand Agree with Chris--this is a fabulous and helpful video, and I need to do a similar job on an old Mohawk 16 I just inherited. My son wants to cover the red color with green--you seemed to have achieved pretty good coverage with the Krylon.

Chris--I inherited an old Mohawk 16 as weell. I can't tell what model and get no response from the Mohawk website. I have a faded serial. Any idea how to identify model, I am about one month behind you on the same project. Would love to connect and benefit from your experience in any way possible!

Mark Kline I am not sure exactly. I know that the company still exists although they are not producing anymore Royalex canoes. That’s a shame the haven’t responded. I’ll do some searching... there has to be a way to tell from the dimensions and features what model it is. I will let you know if I find anything. If you’d like to chat over email then feel free... my info is in the description.

Wow, so timely! Ive got a mad river royalex in red. I am in the process of changing the wood gunwales. I too will change the color to green. More of an olive green for waterfowling. JB weld can repair anything, however I wasnt sure if it adhears well to royalex. (i gues it does). The keel strip is a sweet addition. Thank you for the video, great job, and be proud of it!

I have a Red Mad River Royalex canoe as well - was a former Boy Scout canoe I picked up at a good deal. Never thought about changing the color until i watched some videos today. Green sounds like a good plan. What are you going to use?

thanks so much - didn't know I could repaint royalex. Heard you could use linseed oil to get colour back, but a full paint job with good marine paint would be infinitely better.

Ummmm, thanks for….. nothing. Not one thing on the painting part, which isn’t that the purpose of the makeover. 1) what paint and 2) how did it get applied.

Check the description box… I have linked the paint and other items used. It was a spray on application.

Great video. Do you think this can be applied to a polyethylene canoe?
@ExploreYourLand
@ExploreYourLand 2 года назад
Yes I think so. Both the paint and JB Waterweld should work for that canoe. I would always be careful sanding… go really lightly at first to make sure you don’t take off too much. Good luck 👍🏼

This is probably too late, but painting a poly canoe is usually pretty superficial as the paint tends to come off easily. I've had a Colman canoe for a long time and you can smooth them out, but I usually just use a matching spray paint to spiff it up from time to time, but wouldn't worry too much about primers and proper paint jobs as they will just peel easily.

"keel strips" are called Skid Plates. The "front and back" of a boat are called Bow and Stern.
