Canoe Sailing on the Orwell Estuary. Fishy Noodle Pocket Stove Lunch. Solway Dory Sailing Rig.

In this video, I am back on the water in my homemade cedar strip canoe. As a last chance paddle before the big Scotland trip, I head down to Suffolk, to the river Orwell estuary. Leaving Pin Mill, I paddle down stream using my sail and the outgoing tide to push me towards the ports of Felixstowe and Harwich.
After a lunch stop at Shotley, I head back upstream, passing huge container ships and luxury sailing yachts, tacking across the estuary and using my paddle for extra power to make headway into the wind.
The tidal estuary of the River Orwell is a beautiful area full of birdlife and great fun under sail or for paddling. There is good access from Pin Mill, where there is a car park and a good pub for that refreshing pint afterwards.

Really enjoyed this one, Simon, though I do enjoy all your videos. I knew Pin Mill more than sixty years ago when I was at school just up river at Woolverstone Hall - it was a bit different then! Over the years I've enjoyed cycling, hill walking, camping, dinghy and offshore sailing, and paddled few canoes, but I've never sailed a canoe. These days I'm in a wheelchair, but I've taken up cooking and I'm still learning from your posts. Keep up the good work!

Oh my Lord, whenever you launch or beach your canoe it brings back strong memories of a stripper canoe that I built in the 1980’s. The sound of Gravel scraping along the bottom really sends shivers up the spine. All of the little scratches that can eventually compromise the skin of fiberglass . Those things need tender, loving care when on dry land. I couldn’t take the stress anymore and sold mine to someone else who could carry on with the TLC that it requires. Lovely trip and sail across the estuary, thanks.
@simonablokeinthewoods

Yes, it takes a bit of care and maintenance - just completed some re-fibreglassing repairs, but I built it to use it - I’ll deal with scratches and holes as they appear 👍🛶

Nice mention for Craig there. He's a top lad, i always enjoy his videos and like yours, they've gone on my regulars list. I'm loving the sail idea. what a great way to get around. you can really see why our ancestors used the waters as roads back in the day. I was trying to work out how the rudder at the mid section of the canoe works, (I'm not that hot on these things). Look at all those containers full of Amazon and e-Bay goods most likely. Those ships are monsters aren't they. I spent some years in Southampton and Bristol so I've seen a fair few monsters ships. Good interesting stuff Simon, thanks for making and posting.

Lovely video Simon, I’ve paddled the Shotley to Orwell bridge route a couple of times in a sea kayak, with a stop at the pub at Pinmill on the way. The canoe sailing rig looks like it’s working well. I reached 5.5 knots downwind on Loch Oich when I did the Glen a couple of years ago. I also paddled it with the guy that wrote the guide book. So if you have any questions about the route I might be able to help. You now doubt hane done your homework, but 3 things that could be handy. No open fires allowed at the sites on the canal itself, get ready for the 70lm portage at Fort Augustus, and be open to doing the trip starting at Imverness if the wind is wrong. Have a great trip, I’m super envious!

Simon: Thanks for another great video! But you don't need to apologize for the color of your jacket. I'm a beginner bushcrafter (learning from you) but a seasoned sailor. And although a gamut of olive greens and browns are much favored in clothing for bushcraft activities for the purpose of blending in with the environment, bright yellow and red are the preferred colours for open water sailing. Contrary to bushcraft, you want to be as noticeable as possible when you are sailing in open waters. There is a reason why that huge buoy (called "butt"?!?) you past sail on your starboard side at 3:12 is red and most open water life jackets are orange. Horses for courses.
