As we kick off paddling season, I thought I'd share a trip we took last summer down the Cape Fear River, camping in Raven Rock State Park. The weather gave us a bit of a rough start but it cleared up and turned into an awesome, memorable trip. Thank you to Cape Fear River Adventures (capefearadventures.com) for the shuttle and use of the boat ramp at the end!

This brought back great memories. I made that same run the end of May and had a blast. I liked the drone shots. Great job on the video.

I live a few blocks from that train bridge. Im guessing the rocks were at raven rock park. Good fishing spots all around and the river is alot of fun.

Right on! Yes, the rapids were around the park. Such a pretty section. Thanks for watching!

Nice video! I'm thinking of doing this run next summer. I've kayaked Blewett Falls to Cheraw on the PeeDee several times, which is a great paddle, but I'm ready for a change of pace.. What was the water level of the river when y'all made this trip?
@SideTrailAdventures
@SideTrailAdventures 10 месяцев назад
I honestly don't remember the level but I believe it was on the lower side. Just as a recommendation, if I was doing this trip again though, I'd go all the way down to Erwin. The stretch below Lillington is pretty good. Thanks for watching!

@@SideTrailAdventures Thanks! I did notice there is a really nice labrynth style fish trap just below the bridge at Lillington, it looks very much like the ones on the PeeDee below US 74, except it seems to be in better shape, not as worn down from current and storm debris. I definitely want to see that, so I might do the run from Lillington to Erwin, and do the Buckhorn to Lillington run another time.

@riverkings Pete did that very trip from the Haw River all the way to the coast on the Cape Fear.

@SideTrailAdventures how traversable was it? Is a canoe the best choice, or do you believe a john boat could make it?

@@RMilitant Great question. I'd love to try it in my little 14ft vhull Jon boat with a 15hp on it but I'd like to really talk to people that have done it and get an idea of what and how much stuff to take with us! Hate to get in middle of nowhere and then run outta gas or something stupid happens and then trouble 🤣🤣 !

We used Cape Fear River Adventures (capefearadventures.com/) in Lillington to shuttle us up to the put-in at Buckhorn Dam. They were really great to work with. Hope you have a great time and thanks for watching!

Do you think I could Kayak this from Buckhorn to Erwin? And do you remember how many miles per hour were you able to travel?
@SideTrailAdventures
@SideTrailAdventures 3 года назад
Short answer is yes with your current boat, depending on the water level. This trip was a WHILE ago (before I even started the channel) so I honestly don't remember the water level but I know it was lower. If you wanted to do it at higher levels...probably want a boat you could skirt into. We shuttled through Cape Fear River Adventures so I'd check with them about recommend levels. They're good folks. I haven't paddled below Lillington but I know the river gets a little rowdier downstream. This trip wasn't a mileage trip but I know we went pretty slow.

Looking back on it, I'd imagine any other way than the way we did it would be easier 😂 Thanks for watching!
