Enjoyed a November canoe on the North Saskatchewan River. Put-in at Horburg, and took-out at the town of Rocky Mountain House. Total length of the trip was 36 km, or about 22 miles. Warm temperatures lately, as all of the snow had melted. Hope you enjoy.

Your canoe seems to have good boyancy and handles standing waves well. You took a bit of water on some standing waves and I noticed that you seemed to navigate these by powering through them. Yet, the safe way to move through standing waves is to slow down, angle the boat slightly, backpaddling a bit when they get bigger. I discussed this in my Kindle ebook (1972 navigation of Little and South Nahanni Rivers), after practicing (and once swimming because we powered too much) on this very same stretch of the NSR. Incidentally, this stretch looks quite different than it did 50 years ago: seems there has been lots of logging at places.

I'm sure this stretch looks quite different than it did 50 years ago. I would have loved to have seen it then... as well as paddle the river before the dam was built. That would be a quite a trip paddling the Nahanni Rivers. Thanks for watching.

Thanks very much Jim. Yeah it is a nice stretch of water, not surprising it is the most popular section to paddle in the summer. Take care, Nick

awesome river to canoe.....man that water must be cold and to be exposed to the cold on the water...wow for a swamp rat like me, I would have to be heavily bundled up with a wet suit..lol
@nickharland3795
@nickharland3795 8 лет назад
Yeah it's very cold water. I was wearing a wet suit that covered my legs, up to my shoulders. Just my arms were exposed. Otherwise warm enough for a t-shirt or light jacket. Very unusual for this time of year. But great for paddling. Thanks, take care.

Brilliant, some of those were like the sea rollers I used to play in on the estuaries, the low sun and scenery is stunning :)

Thanks so much. It is a nice section to paddle, and the weather is co-operating late in the season. The canoes are usually put away by now. I can only image paddling on or near the ocean, kind of intimidating actually. But would love to try. Thanks again, take care.

Hey you're very welcome, and thank you. There was a fair bit of snow here, all melted in the last little while. It's been warm, but not 85, I could go for that right about now! Thanks again, take care.

Looked like a really nice paddling trip! Your Mad River canoe handled that rough water pretty good! Thanks for sharing!

Hey thanks Chris, it was a very nice trip, especially for this time of year. The old banana style canoe handles pretty well I'd say, better than I, haha. Thanks, take care.

Thanks very much Woods, that's the best kind of feedback I can can get. First person point of view. Yellowstone River would be a great canoe trip I'm sure. I've got some winter hikes planned, I'm sure you do too. Looking forward to your next outing in the Montana mountains. Thanks again, take care.

I'm happy to see you edit and upload so quickly, looks like a fun little trip! I noticed there was no ten km hike through the bush at the end! 😊

Yeah editing was easy with all Go-Pro footage, and no talking. Super fun section to paddle. It didn't feel complete without a 10 km hike through swamps and forests, lol. Thanks again Dan, appreciate the shuttle service.

It's been a very warm November so far, some rivers were icing up at this time last year. It was my first time canoeing in November, and I'm hopeful to get out again soon. I always enjoy paddling that section. Thanks, take care.

Nice late season canoeing trip. Looks fast flow after melted snow? I had plan to make last trip on this week but -13' and 7m/s wind feels too hard. On river is already ice floes. Maybe it's the best idea wait spring. :D
@nickharland3795
@nickharland3795 8 лет назад
We did have a few big snowfalls, but it all melted away in the last week. River flow was a bit low, but good enough to make for some fun paddling, and practice. -13 is quite cold to be on the water, you might have to wait for spring. It will be ice here soon enough. Thanks, take care.

Have you ever canoed the Clearwater or Brazeau rivers?
@nickharland3795
@nickharland3795 3 года назад
So far, just the last 30 km of the Clearwater River... to N. Sask River and Rocky Mountain House. I definitely plan on canoeing the upper Clearwater River. I have not paddled the Brazeau River, but hope to get a trip in there too.
