THANK YOU!!! I have always described my loathing of Nikons by saying they are backwards. It never hit me that that they ARE actually backwards. The clockwise/counterclockwise thing makes perfect sense (both practically and metaphysically)

Great review Peter, its so good to hear a review from a photographer that has worked up from film. I love the setting for video, also I like the way you present the review, don't listen to the haters.

Yes, I notice that too. I am using my new 24mm 1.4 lens at 1.4, and the DOF envelope is not very big. It's funny cause when I lean back it gets slightly out of focus, but when I get more excited and lean forward in talking to you, I get into the focus zone better. I am going to have to up the F stop to 2.8 and see if that gives me a bigger focus zone.

Jesus Peter... this is the first of your videos I've seen, and I gotta say... You made my day... This hyper upbeat attitude you're projecting is something else. Also, fantastic topic, given that I (somewhat late in the day) just ordered the 1Dx and am trembling in anticipation like a chihuahua on acid, so soaking up this kind of praise (although i knew how good it was) just keeps me going till the postman ring - only once this time ;) Thanks for your positive attitude and quirkiness

Hi Peter. Thanks for your video. I enjoyed it as today, I purchased a substantial kit from a recently retired photographer which includes both the 1DX & the 24-70/2.8 II. Can't wait for it to arrive. Meanwhile and again, I enjoyed your video. Thanks, Dale

I love the 1DX. I work a lot with Nikon and at the end ...Canon 1DX. This camera is for me the great solution for everything i need.

Yes, my lead camera was the Nikon D3X when I added Nikon to my gear bag. The purpose of this video was to inject confidance that the new Canon 1DX delivers what I was looking for a few years back when the 1D3 came out. The Mark IV is good, but not as good as Nikon. The 1DX takes Canon to the top, where they were before the stumble downward for me. Bottom line, the 1DX is a flagship camera that will not disappoint but also make you feel you are shooting with the best and you didn't compromise.

I'm watching this video years after you produced it because I was given a mint condition 1DX, never used, less than a 1000 shutter cycles for my birthday this month. It may be obsolete but a lot of videos made during the 1DX release, are still posted on RU-vid. Good for me. I wish it was a Mark II, but I am lucky to have such a beautiful camera. It sat in a closet unused all these years. Is it obsolete? If you were me, would you use it or sell it and buy say an EOS R with the money. A 1DX in mint condition might bring about $2000.

They were going for optimum quality combined with the most megapixels. The difference in megapixels from 21 to 18 means nothing for any real purposes in any way (like printing). The difference in quality is very large and very desirable. You can add dynamic range to the main benefits too. A big winner overall in favor of this sensor over the old one or the 5D MK3.

One of my cameras is also a 1DX and I agree it is top of the line; full frame, 12 FPS (Up to 14), the fantastic color depth, low level of high ISO noise, the detail you get using L Series lens is a vey pleasing experience, I should add, in my case I get great results using my Canon 24-70 2.8L Version 1 which is one of my favorites lens and the one I use the most, albeit I just used Version II on a bride at the Spanish Monastery (Miami) and the images blew me away, specially in the corners, the detail of the dress was even better than in the center of the image, also excellent images when shooting with my Canon 50 1.2L &85MM 1.2L (luminosity does not get better that that!) and of course my 70-200 2.8L.You pair the 1DX with good glass and you are going to be very happy camper!In not so many words is one of the cameras I enjoy the most and my clients love the results, no wonder they call it "The Dream Camera"Great review as usual Peter from Miami!

I've had both Canon and Nikon starting from the film era. But the major thing for me not to go with the Nikon was Nikon lenses manual focusing. If you focus manually close with Canon you turn focusing ring clockwise but with Nikon it's counter clockwise. I've never got over it, for me it's just intuitively wrong. It's like if you got in your hands a bolt and a nut (camerawise) and you spin that nut clockwise it moves away from you and sort of "closer to the subject", if you know what I mean.:)

I own a 1D X and love using it with the 24-70mm II and the 70-200mm f2.8 IS II , it is so sharp with these lenes even wide open . The only complant i have is that it did't take long for dust specs to get up into the prism , how is your friends one ? ·

Try using the "Capture One" editing software from phase one.. I get the beat possible results from my 1DX using capture one than any other software.

One of the ENORMOUS problems for Canon (or any manuf.) is clearing the sensor (electrically) after each shot. For years, Canon couldn't clear the sensor (10MP) any faster than 10FPS. Now they have 14FPS at 18MP, so it's a pretty big deal. I think when they advance further, they will increase MP and hold the FPS at current levels.

They are both loud and i think the Nikon is actually louder but not much difference. Neither give you an option to use a silent "electronic shutter" like the Panasonic GH3 does. But the Canon along with the Nikon are still the king for wildlife and BIF photography so you have to go with what is given. They DO claim a silent mode, but it is only a separation of the mirror slap going down being delayed after the shutter opens and closes. They handle differently the delay in the mirror going down.

At this point in time I would choose the 1DX. They are both so similar that you can't tell much of a difference though.

Hi Peter, I just had a look at your photog.website and saw are your awesome images from the last wedding you shot - at the end you mentioned somw shots from 1D3-most D3X. So after watching your last couple of 1DX vids, do you believe the 1DX files are even nice than those 2 cams?..Thinking about getting 1dx but worried about not having enough resolution to play with for portraits?

Thx for the reply Peter..have you tried the 600exrt system with 1dx by any chance too?..and how do you find the AF of the 1DX in very low light like a night club as i would be using it for a lot of band photography.

What one should I buy the Canon 1DX or 5D MK11 for overall photography? I like to shot in low light, back light, etc, I don't care about video that much, I do mostly still shots, not much action shots. Reply

Hello Mr. Peter, Can you tell me, Why Canon reduce the Mega Pixel for Canon EOS 1Dx, You know Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III older than 1Dx but it's higher than 1Dx in Mega Pixel, It's about 21.5 Mega Pixel, 1Dx only 18.1 Mega Pixel !!! Thanks ...

Master Peter, I am photographer who sells pictures (professional photographer wedding) (rsrsr) and I would very, very much more you help me with this dilemma I'm facing. Ha several months researching about the 1Dx to know if the AF system 1Dx is much higher than the 5Dmk3 in low light, like the night. In Brazil, most weddings are night and have lost focus in a few clicks with the 5Dmk3 (Lens 85mm 1.8 and 35mm 1.4L). Please, I beg you to help me with this question.
@PeterGregg
@PeterGregg 10 лет назад
Just start with some very basic info (and then I will answer your question). The Canon 1DX and the Nikon D4(s) are Canon's and Nikon's flagship and highest level cameras. Everything else is below them and are lessor cameras in one way or another. So to answer your question, yes, the focus system on the 1DX is better in low light and ALSO able to lock on better in lower light than the 5D Mark III. The 1DX is also superior in focus tracking on moving subjects. Some will read this as bashing on the 5D mark III, but if read carefully, I did not say one negative word about the 5D Mark III. The problem comes when people want to "think" the 5D Mark III is equal to or better than the 1DX, and it simply is not. To be even more aggressive in my statements, I think a professional photographer should always get the best camera they can afford as their tools of the trade. This isn't casual photography. Sports, weddings, and other event photography is a one time event and should have the best available to do the job. But - and I am not finished - there is no problem actually buying a camera that a person specifically chooses to do the job as long as the photographer is aware of the features they are willing to forgo or don't think they need, and makes a conscience choice and not an uninformed choice. What is a poor mindset is when I read or hear someone say that the Canon 1DX or the Nikon D4 is not a wedding camera. They most certainly are, and they are in fact designed to BE the ultimate wedding cameras, and it is so stated exactly in the definition of the cameras. Thanks for your question, it gave me the opportunity to say something to the comments that are made to me when they say the 1DX is not a wedding camera. At that point, I have to question if i am really talking to a pro or not.
@gabrielcalvet8951
@gabrielcalvet8951 10 лет назад
Thank you, Peter, you really helped me see things a little differently. I totally agree when you say to use the best equipment in our work. I confess I was not sure the 1DX have the characteristics of a camera for marriage or that was designed exclusively for sport for its high performance. With 5D MIII have lost some espontânios moments I most appreciate. She is a great camera and do not intend to change, but rather, add the 1DX. Can be sure that I will get increasingly perfecting me to deserve the title of professional (rsrsrsrsrsrs).

Here is a quote from Canon's own web site (USA) "The choice of professionals in fields ranging from extreme sports to wedding photographers, the EOS-1D X DSLR camera is incomparable in speed, ruggedness and precision. And it only gets better. Responding to user input, the new Firmware Update Version 2.0.3 adds enhancements that provide improved AF performance and more control of exposure and customization, helping to ensure EOS-1D X users have an ideal tool to do what they do best: capturing those golden opportunities, wherever and whenever they happen." What they are saying is that the best of the best that they have, bot in materials and in technology is in the 1DX. Some of it is in other cameras, but not all of it in one camera other than the 1DX.

+Anthony Harriott Agreed. I use two in weddings, one with the 16-35 and the other with the 70-200. The center point can focus in pitch black conditions and iso 12800 is the cleanest from any camera ive seen... tho i would love a 1Dx.

I own a 1DX and compered to my Mark IV in image quality there isn't much difference , you talk so much about the 1DX but you don't even know it can shoot at 12 fps and that's only if shutter speed is above 1/1000 , 14 fps with mirror up . Now you know! Have a nice day.
