Edit: Wait!!!!! You are in AF-S not AF-C!!!! No wonder af doesn’t stick is not supposed to. AF-C is servo continuous focus. You should really add something to description to acknowledge the screw up. I have never ever seen AF like that on a Z body even the lowly Z5 and Z50. Not a good look for Nikon. Beautiful images.
@@SJSquarePhotos yes, it locks on the eye further away now , but it’s just still nowhere near as accurate as my r5. I can have a person running at the camera in high plus at 1.2 on r5 and not miss a shot. On the z7 if they even move an inch it’s missing, that’s so frustrating
Nikon needs a Z8 to bridge the gap between Z9 and the rest of the field. That will be the camera that will inherit most Z9 features without the price and grip of Z9. I shoot Nikon and the 50mm 1.2 lives on my Z7ii while the Z9 is my go to for everything else.
Focus mode was AF-S in this video for Nikon for all of the viewfinder footage. AF-C is continuous focus (servo). AF-S is single focus that doesn’t track. You’ve been a Nikon shooter in past and should know that.
@@Tap-a-roo if they filled the same market neither would need to exist.. they can’t wait for it to be freely available.. loads of shooters would rather not have to have a grip on the camera and they’re waiting for something else. That’s my opinion anyways
I have a z7ii, this makes me feel embarrassed for Nikon. There is no reason why Nikon can't make the focus close to the r5 on the z7ii. Nikon are just trying to protect the z9. The z7ii will not get an improvement in af untill after 1 year of the z8 coming out if it ever does.
@@jamesjackson4264 hard ware for z9 capability but that dual processor has more than enough power to be on par with that of a A7iii or 4 no excuse for that and I’m sure they have the tech for it but why give it out if people are will to shell out 5k for a z9
@@theflyest203 I have owned the a3. The first z6 and z7 are on par with it after the latest update. Have not shot the 2s but shouldn’t they be better. Dual is all hype. It does slower things more efficiently. It can’t do faster things like the z9.
I’m looking at this on my phone and I can tell the difference. What do you mean YOU can’t tell looking on a monitor? The Z7/50mm 1.2 Nikon isn’t missing focus, it just isn’t sharp wide open. You have to stop it down to F2 (Canon and Sony are as sharp at 1.2 as the Nikon at F2 or 2.8
No it did miss focus, I have another video this week comparing r5 files to z7 files and I found quite a few close up shots of my son , it’s very sharp wide open, it was just missing like crazy , maybe it’s better on z9
@@SNAPAVELI it’s not. It’s soft on the z9 compared to the 28mm 1.4e on a D850. I sold the Z9 and 50mm 1.2 S because I wasn’t impressed with either. It’s running into four really exceptional lenses and coming up short (sigma 105, 200 f2, 300 2.8, and 28mm).
@@SNAPAVELI the 28 was no issue because at the distance you’re shouting the depth of field is 6”. On the shallower lenses, if you were doing something like a headshot - getting in tight - it was hit or miss. It could be locked on the eye, and still not nail the focus. Anything less than 1.5” of depth of field. Under 15’ on the 200. Under 10’ on the sigma. For the price I wasn’t impressed. Sold it to a friend who bought the new 400, but couldn’t get a z9. I sold him the 50 too. He sold me his brand new D850 for peanuts. So now I’m shooting two of them. They have no issues with autofocus on live view with the normal box or pinpoint with the same lenses, for reference. This is the same thing I saw on Polins video when he compared all three brands and I didn’t believe it, even though all his Nikon shots were basically missing focus. I thought it was the Atmis slowing the camera down. There’s something slow about the processing power of the Z9. These wildlife photographers toting it are shooting 600mm F4 at over 150 feet. They have like 20” of depth of field so the tracking is fine, and they couldn’t tell the difference anyway if it missed slightly. It’s the close up work it fails.
I thought the RF 50mm F 1.2 was big so the Nikon lens must be massive. Already in the RF system but I am curious to see how Nikon is doing thanks for the comparison.
@@SNAPAVELI gotta be a reason for.. they wouldn’t just do it for fun.. could be the extra bits needed for the display and extra functions buttons.. without that area it takes it close to rf size
As far as the picture goes they are the same. Neither is going to give you a bad shot for the most part. I have yet to not get a shot on the z6/z7. If you in the Nikon stay them like myself and not leaving then wait for the next camera. Me personally I won’t be getting it till it’s close to 50% off in the used market. Which happens quicker than you think on cameras.
Once again the original z7 files blows me away! I think it’s a superior file quality. The R5 is right there though also amazing. But like you said z7 is slow. Just use single point AF and you will be fine. At least focus points everywhere and will be accurate. It’s a portrait camera downs t have to be super fast. I think only GFX is better than these two in terms of file quality. Amazing how different colors are and both are very nice. One of Nikons best sensors
Yes it’s definitely one of my favorite sensors! But even with single point and a child ( can’t hold still ) you can be forced to way overshoot the session. Hope they make a z8 with same sensor !
@@livejames9374 yes in some clips you see it was, I tried them all , afc , afs, eye af , single point… I’m only showing what I have the ninja plugged in for. The ninja is pretty big and gets in the way so I only used it for a few seconds. I did feel like I had better luck with my z5 though…. Very strange
@@livejames9374 yes, but that’s only what you are seeing, the viewfinder was only recorded for a few minutes. I shot with that lens for a good week trying all methods, some are better than others but none good enough for moving portraits at 1.2 in my opinion. It would be fine for static portraits
Yes! I do love that Nikon 50. It’s really big though. If they just had a z8 or something with better af I’d be interested. The z9 dynamic range isn’t there for me. But in a year or two they should be solid. 85 1.2 this year and 35 1.2 next year
