I have had this lens for my Canon FT-QL camera since the 1970s. I'm now starting to appreciate what I have, and your video really showed me what this lens can do. Thank you!

I have quite a collection of Canon FD lenses (including an FL 55/1.2) from shooting film in the late 70's. I specifically picked up a Sony A7R2 so I can continue to use these lenses with just a simple adapter. I actually like this lens on the Sony body, but rarely go wider than f2...I find the bokeh at f2 very pleasing. If I didn't have this lens, I'd probably look for another Minolta-Rokkor 58/1.2 lens. One real advantage with the Sony body is the in-body stabilization. I rarely shoot without a tripod, but when I do each lens is now stabilized.

The image at f1.2 is still usably sharp and the bokeh is pretty good. The lack of multi-coating is probably the only problem with this one but it creates that vintage character. Build quality is top notch. The aperture ring on these FL lenses clicks nicely unlike the plastic ring nFD lenses. Definitely a great bargain f1.2 vintage lens.

That's a great breakdown of the lens. The results at f/1.2 are definitely usable.

Thank you. Good review. For unprofessional :) (jk) Imo, it is better than many so called professional reviews. All the best.

I’ve got the later FD SSC version, which I use on my T90 film body. I have tried it on my Fuji X-Pro 1, but I prefer the chrome nose 50mm f1.4 as it’s lighter.

Excellent review. Showing results, observing characteristics, and drawing reasonable conclusions -- the scientific method does not require any sort of 'professional' credentials.

wow amazes me the concern ppl put on fringing!! I was looking at the subject! The fringing actually looks cool.

I avoid at all cost shooting at anything wider than f2 with my 50mm f1.8 and also when I had a 50mm f1.4. I use the lenses for video.

Flaring? Try using a lens hood. Make one from adapter rings. I did for my other lenses.
@JamesClark1991

Tried that and unfortunately wide open it does zero. I still own this lens though, it has its moments!

There are videos online with people using black construction paper rolled in a cone that is about 8" long and it works just fine. I use a series of lens adapters connected together to make a 8 or 9 inch lens hood and it works fine. I think you might consider how long the hood is before giving up on this idea.
@jmoss99

I have heard that some people paint the inside or the barrel black to minimize internal reflections. I haven't done it yet.

You should look into what it would cost to have someone put new coatings on the lens. I have heard of people doing that.
@yesthisisdonut

i'm very interested to see if the flaring is reduced in a later "SSC" version of this lens as those later versions supposedly have better coatings on each element.
@JamesClark1991
@JamesClark1991 4 года назад
I'd presume it would be better, but not drastically. If I ever get my hands on one I'll post a comparison.

Hi James, I have a similar vintage lens to the one in your video: Canon FL 50mm 1.8, mounted on my Canon 80D with an FL/FD to EOS adapter. The strange thing is, that it doesn't take sharp pictures when focus set to infinity. It only renders a sharp image when I approach the lens to an object within 20 to 30 cms (about 10 inches). Do you have any hint as to what the reason for this can be?
@JamesClark1991
@JamesClark1991 4 года назад
Spacing between the lens and the camera mount sounds like it's too far? You get similar results to yours when adding a 'macro extension tube' to a lens.
@squiggmonster1495
@squiggmonster1495 4 года назад
I have the same problem. My camera is the Canon R, so I think I just bought the wrong adapter. I also have a canon 6dmii and it doesn't focus either. I'm going to try a new adapter, if they don't work then I'm going to sell the lens.
@sidekickbob7227
@sidekickbob7227 3 года назад
Late response, but it might help other users. The Canon FL,FD, and nFD, has a flange focal distance at 42mm. Your canon EF mount has a 44mm flange focal distance. In other words, the lens will not focus the image sharply at your sensor at longer distances. You need an adapter with a correcting lens inside. Otherwise you will not be able to focus the lens to infinity.
@jmoss99
@jmoss99 2 года назад
How does it focus at infinity?
@JamesClark1991
@JamesClark1991 2 года назад
Not fantastically to be honest, it's ever so slightly shy of infinity I feel, but only just. This was the case with both adapters. Wouldn't be my first choice for landscapes.

These FL and FD lenses need what is known as a Conversion kit. Mounted on their original cameras they were between 4mm and 6mm closer to the film. There were kits being made, then the person died. I still like the lens for use within 6 feet at wide open. Stopped down it can reach what you said. You are making good use of it in your video. I have 2 f1.2 lenses. This one and Olympus OM-System G.Zuiko Auto-S 55mm f1.2 1974. The Olympus is Radioactive 3389 CPM (hot hot hot), but not the FL. I bought both of them this last winter. I like them both. Now this is a heavy lens at 1.05822 lbs, but there are much more heavy lenses out there. Look up the 300mm and 400mm up to the 1200mm lenses. I think the 1200mm is 65 lbs.

Hello Clark, I have 55 F 1.2 S.S.C. and when turning the diaphragm ring, the blades do not move, does the lens need to be mounted to the camera?
@JamesClark1991
@JamesClark1991 4 года назад
Doesn't need to be mounted technically but the breech-lock pin on the rear of the lens needs to be held in the correct position for the aperture control to work. This is what the adapter does for you when it's mounted to the lens and you set it from "open" to "lock".
@JamesClark1991

this lens is radioactive
@JamesClark1991
@JamesClark1991 3 года назад
I'm told it's the equivalent of a chest x-ray.
@Simon-eh5ez
@Simon-eh5ez 2 года назад
@@JamesClark1991 It's actually way less. You'd likely have to keep the lens on you for 1000 hours to equal that of a chest x-ray. Maybe don't keep it under the pillow - but normal use is completely fine. Also, i think only one of the internal lens groups contain thoriated glass on this particular model, although i have not opened one up myself yet and tested.
@rantoole7802
@rantoole7802 Год назад
The FL 551.2 is not radioactive. The former 58 1.2 is.
