A short test of the Magic Lantern RAW video feature that I did a few months ago while checking out a location for a film idea. Filmed in 1472x626. My first time shooting in RAW so obviously far from perfect! Shot on a Sandisk 45mb/s SD card. Each recording was roughly 10 seconds long before automatically stopping due to the 60D's buffer speeds.

Ok so I'm seriously thinking about buying this bad boy and I'm kinda confused. What is this about only shooting raw for like twelve seconds? Could someone tell me? Cause I've never heard of that before. (Tho I have never owned a Canon DSLR) Thanks guys! 😃😃😃😃😃😚😃😃😚😃

Awesome video, loving the location. Can you get 1920x810 RAW out of this camera with a 32GB Extreme 45MB/s card or would I need a faster card?

I've just added a link at the bottom of the description which is a table of how each camera performs with the RAW video mode and what sort of resolutions and shooting times you can expect from each. The only camera that I know of at the minute that can record as high resolution as that continuously is the 5D mkiii. The cameras that take CF cards have the advantage but hopefully you can work things out from the table

how do you get ML raw on a 60d? I think maybe my ML is outdated and doesn't have it.

If you haven't worked it out by now you have to download one of the nightly builds not the stable release. The raw function is on there

Here is the bad news :(. Your Sandisk 45mbps card actually tops out at 23bmbps in camera. I understand the 60D's buffer is near 22mbps BUT It can go further than that if a card at much faster speeds is inserted such as the 90mbps card that tops out at 70mbps.

Search for the newest nightly builds, they're the one's that have to option for RAW video as it is not yet released in the stable version

i have the sandisk 32gb class 10 80mbs and it stops at 8 seconds???

The 60D is limited to a write speed of 21mb/s even if you have a higher speed card so you do get a lot of bottlenecks that stop the recording. It's pretty hit and miss what recording time you'll get out of it so worth doing a lot of testing at different resolutions. There's link to a table in the description that may help you

Stay Hippay mayne Ideally I would use Davinci Resolve but I had some problems with that so I ended up importing into After Effects for this video which worked alright

***** can you use a external recorder like an atomos star by recording the HDMI out? I think I heard there was some way to get around the time limit by rrecording the hdmi live feed to an external recorder

Wow excellent video in raw does it matter what camera or is 7d better for video in raw? And could I use t1i for raw videos

The 7D will perform better as it can take CF cards which write data at a faster rate. You can use the t1i and it should perform the same as the 60D

Late reply sorry, but yes it does take a lot of space. I had about 20gb of footage from the hour or two that I was out filming

that's not bad this is in RAW right? I have heard someone say shooting RAW takes 7GB/minute hmmmm

M D A M A D Yeah that's in RAW. I wasn't filming the entire time I was out. At 1080p you can get about 12 minutes on a 64gb card but I was shooting at 1472x626 because the 60D can't handle up to 1080p RAW so it didn't take up as much space as that

Good stuff. What was your work flow like? Did you have to correct/grade in ACR/Lightroom and save as tiffs or send the dngs to AE? That's what I found to work for me, but when I bring the DNGs straight into Resolve, I get dead pixels. Any idea about that? The raw files i get from a 5dMk3 are perfect without dead pixels, but 60D seems to have issue.

I just brought the DNGs straight into After Effects and used ACR and MBL for grading. I've had the same issue of dead pixels in resolve, there's meant to be a way of fixing it but not looked into it yet

Hey, how did you shoot in 1472 by 626? I have been using ML on my 60d for a wile, but just now got into RAW video.

In the RAW video settings you can change the aspect ratio to 2.35:1 and then change the resolution to 1472x626

how long were you able to record non stop raw and with what sd card

Sevin Wilson It's about 4 years back now but at the time I think it was a 45mb/s sandisk and could only record for less than a minute without stopping. Though all my shots were pretty short

Joseph Burn thanks, do you already use ML? I am thinking to take the 5d mkiii for this reason, but I don't really know what kind of Cards I should take for shooting raw

paolo fioramonti I don't use it anymore as I upgraded from a Canon a few years ago. But when I did use it any card class 10 or faster was fine. For the 5d I imagine the faster CF cards will do fine

Yeah there's quite a lot of tutorials on RU-vid. You have to download one of the nightly builds instead of the recommended stable version and you can enable it in that

KINGNEF Yeah I did some basic colour correction in Adobe Camera RAW when I imported the files into After Effects. The footage without any adjustments is very flat with a high dynamic range

thetruth Think the resolution I was shooting at took up a few gb of space per minute. Each shot could only be about 20 seconds or so long though down to the buffer speed of the 60D. You can get longer recordings and higher resolutions out of the cameras that take CF cards

I was recording for around 30 seconds for each shot and didn't ever have the recording stop. Never done a test to see at what point it does stop though, but will be looking a lot more into this soon :)

Sorry for the late reply. Under RAW video in Magic Lantern there's the option to change aspect ratio, change that to 2.35:1 and then under the resolution settings you will be able to select 1472x626

halomaniackslashcraz Are you using the latest stable version or one of the nightly builds? RAW is only on the nightly builds as far as I know because they don't have an official stable release for it yet

halomaniackslashcraz On the download page there is the stable release at the top and if you scroll down there is a link to download one of the nightly builds, they're the ones you want if you want to use the RAW video

Awesome! Couple of questions. 1)What lens are you using in this video? 2)Can you take a screenshot of your LCD w/ settings for video? It's the one with the multi-grid view of settings? I've tried to get 1472X626 but can only get 11 seconds of time. Thanks.

Thank you! I was using the Tokina 11-16mm for this video. I'll check my settings next time I film, planning on doing another RAW test in the next week and trying a few different things so will let you know then
