If you're new to the Canon 70D DSLR or just new to shooting video with DSLR's this tutorial will help you learn how to setup your Canon DSLR to shoot high quality video.
Shown here, the 70D has a few specific features that are a nice upgrade from the Canon 60D such as a touchscreen, great auto focus system, audio meters viewable while recording and white balance shift. Learn how to setup these new features as well as the core settings for shooting with any video camera set to manual control.
Start by putting your camera in manual so that you have the ability to control all the settings. Record in 1080p at 24fps with a shutter speed of 1/50. Leave these settings like this for your entire shoot.
Use the aperture and ISO controls to get the proper exposure for whatever environment you are filming in. The larger your aperture, the more light you can get into your camera and thus the less you'll need to increase your ISO which will create some noise in your image once you get to a large enough number. My favorite ISOs are 160, 320, 640 and I try to adjust my settings to remain at these numbers at all times for the cleanest image possible.

This tutorial taught me more than 4 years in photographs school. (Slight exaggeration!) but...wow man this really helped me out. I’ve owned this 70D for a couple years and I could not get my videos to be ‘crisp’ my problem was not using manual mode. I had it in program!! Anyhow, I appreciate it. Game changer for me. Thanks again.

+Ray Ortega Great videos about the 70D, probably the last great 1080p DSLR. I noticed this video and the 70D review video to be a little out of focus (it was focused on your ears instead), are u using another 70D to record it? U might have some AF focusing issues.
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 8 лет назад
+Jarot Dasaputranto thanks. No the video was shot on a 60D, no AF. Once in awhile my old Sigma misses focus and that's what happened here. I had to just roll with it because it was shot awhile back and the rest is sharp. I just picked up a monitor so the hope is the next time the AF (non continuous) misses it mark, I'll know ahead time;) Thanks for watching!

Wow Ray ... nice overview + drill-down into specifics. So a few questions: * Why use 24 fps vs. 29.97 fps? Why do you prefer 24? * Do you use the autofocus? (It's so good on the 70d). * Do you ever use the MagicLantern software?
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 9 лет назад
+Doug Greene thanks Doug! 24fps is the standard used in film. That's about it. You'll get a small difference in motion blur between 24 and 30 but another advantage is that you can get more natural light into the camera because you will be able to lower your shutter speed when using 24fps. 24fps = 1/50 shutter. 30fps = 1/60th. I use AF when I need it but there are times, depending on what you are filming when it will lose focus and snap back into focus. So it's usually just dependent on the type of filming I'm doing. I have ML on my T2i, it's cool but I can do most of what I want with the native features.

Ray Ortega Unfortunately, I can't wear a wireless lav because of my hair. I tried it but my hair keeps hitting it. ;) So for now, I'll stick to my Rode VideoMic Pro.
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 8 лет назад
+StyleByZaza yeah I checked out your videos and saw the VMP and the audio sounds good. You might be able to point it up, more at your mouth and try to make sure it's not right over the top of something like your computer so that it won't pick up fan noise as easily. The VMP is great. With lav mics, you can also place them under your shirt which would avoid your hair and makes it so people don't see the mic which is how they handle it in Hollywood.
@StyleByZaza
@StyleByZaza 8 лет назад
Thank you so much for the tip Ray. I will definitely change the position of the mic. It's been bugging me because I control everything with EOS Utility and once I hit the record button, the fan kicks in and it's super loud! I'm now using a dead cat over the mic and moved the laptop further away but that only helped very little. Thanks again! Love your videos and keep up the amazing work! :D

+TvMarshin your welcome - I'm my opinion no camera is better than any other, I don't believe in the whole mid range, high end because at the end of it all its the way the user feels about the camera and how well it suits them that defines its value.... not specs or value.... my canon 70d is superior at video for many reasons and even though it's not the most expensive I wouldn't change it for anything else .... well....perhaps the 80d

@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 4 года назад
Thanks, Mirkamran. Good idea about lighting. I don't setup too many interviews these days but if it's only one person, the lighting can be fairly simple with a single softbox at a minimum, of course you could also use window light if it's not a long interview. If you throw in another smaller light for their hair (so behind them) that can really add to the look and or use that light to fill in the shadows from the keylight which would be about 45 degrees off axis from the interviewee.

I see it's been over 3 years, but for sports/action videos would you suggest going from 24fps to 60 or so to accommodate the faster action? The 70d is the best camera, I'm glad I got it. It simply does everything.
@RayOrtega

Ultimately it's a personal, stylistic decision but yes, shooting sports in 60p would give you smoother action especially for fast panning shots as well as having the ability to slow down the footage if you wanted.

I've got soma basic lens which came with the camera and the video quality is not even that good as iPhone6 video :/ I know it can do better since my wedding camera guy used Canon 70D to film my wedding and the image looks even better than some of the 4k cameras
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 6 лет назад
The kit lenses should definitely be able to produce better video than an iPhone. I suspect that if you're using manual settings, it's just a matter of learning those better. I bet even if you used auto settings, you'd see better results however you definitely want to get the most of the cam so the key with DSLR video is light, learning exposure, focus because you are on a bigger sensor and less is in focus, composition and again...light;) You can get a lens with a larger aperture which will give you better results in low light when used properly with the other elements I mentioned but the kit lens can produce the same image when used properly. A good "cheap" lens with a large aperture is the 'nifty fifty' amzn.to/2Lm57XA but you'll probably want a wider lens and in that case the 35mm f2 with image stabilization is a really cool option podhelp.me/Canon35f2ISBH seen here in my review ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4M57AoCZeeY.html

Congrats on the 70D! Great cam. You don't need 60fps for interviews, in fact I would rather be at 24 or 30 for interviews. I've never had a headphone jack for my 60D etc but I always get good audio by setting it up right. You can record a quick clip and listen to ensure all is OK. Or you might want to consider going with dual system sound and recording audio on the camera as well as onto a digital audio recorder that you can monitor.

I didn't necessarily plan to but I can say that most of what you see in here will apply directly to the 90D. +Ray Ortega . Great. Your video quality is pretty good. Is it only due to lighting or are you also using a lens other than the kit lens? As a question, do you have a video to explain how to improve video quality by changing accessories? (e.g. which type of lens improve video quality and are there any portable and cheap lighting options) Thanks
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 8 лет назад
+cooldude_23pk better lenses can make a nice improvement but in general I find most of the Canon line all the way through does a great job and it's hard to tell the difference in video. Light is just light. You can use almost anything, lots of cheap lights on Amazon but as you spend more you get better durability and in some cases better light quality especially when it comes to LEDs

Amazing video - thank you so much. One thing: when you show us the settings like mic settings you go straight away to the settings. What I'd recommend is to show step by step how you enter those settings (changing mic to manual, etc.) Other than that I loved the video and helped me a lot to set my camera. Subscribed and liked. Going to watch more of your videos now, peace out.

What white balance shift is best if you're shooting in front of a green screen? In other words, which way would you move it, if at all? Thanks.

Is there a way to turn off any info that appears on the screen (magnifier squares or any white squares)? I'm looking at finding a DSLR camera that has HDMI output that we can use on 3 screen projectors at live events so people can see what is going on more clearly. The current DSLR camera we have does not have this function so people see a constant white magnifier square on the screen all the time which is quite annoying as you can imagine.

Ray ! You (and about everyone else I have checked) make a strong case for setting the 70D to "Manual", when shooting Video. And it really makes sense. (And I am a "newbie".)But I am still trying to decide on buying the camera. And my questions are: (A) if I do set the camera to "Manual" --- so I can control the lens and ISO parameters as you suggest --- will I still be able to "pull focus" with the touch screen and (b) will the face-tracking focus still work ? (Or does all of the focusing then have to be done with the manual ring on the lens?) Keep up the great work !
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 8 лет назад
+Dan Little yes, you can still use the auto AF as well as touch screen options for pulling focus when shooting in manual mode. The manual controls are separate when it comes to settings and focusing. Have fun with it and thanks for watching, Dan!

@RayOrtega

These settings are for anyone shooting video in manual mode and apply to most cameras. You do have to understand what each of the basic settings do such as learning the exposure triangle which is how the shutter, ISO and aperture all affect the other. See my videos on shutter speed and aperture to learn more about that and thanks for watching!

+allabouthh thanks! You can't save them as a preset but the good thing the settings in the menu will stay the same and the ones you make to frame rate and shutter should stay the same. Hey Ray, loved your video. I'm using the Canon 70D in a small studio for training and finding significant film noise plaguing my green screen keying in post. I've even observed film noise under sun lit conditions with iso at 100. Maybe that was a settings issue or an intrinsic camera limitation, not sure. Currently I'm still on the kit lens (18-135mm, F3.5 at 18mm). What lens were you using - should I be using a prime for cleaner video?
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 2 года назад
Thanks! With the Canon D line, I've seen some noise in shadows etc even in daylight. I think most of the time it's having the right exposure. If you are seeing some noise in the shadows even in good light, you can increase the contrast in the edit and that might mask that a bit but mostly having good light and getting a good exposure is the key to clean video.
@ProfessorV.
@ProfessorV. 2 года назад
@@RayOrtega Thanks again Ray, I've been slowly purchasing more lights, all at 5000 Kelvin to get the lumens up and reduce my ISO settings as much as possible. I've heard a rumor that the 70D prefers ISO settings in multiples of 160 for more native performance. Moreover, I'm debating purchasing a prime lens that might let more light through but for my studio size, I require a lens in the 18 to 24mm range to keep me in frame with my crop sensor (70D) which drives the lens cost up, especially when I'm also targeting F1.4 to F2.8 for better light performance. I really like the specs on the Sigma Art lens, F1.4 at 20mm, but it's around $1200 Canadian if you can find one. The local dealer thinks I can get away with a Canon F2.8, 24mm for $199 Canadian. All this to get rid of the little dancing pixels in my green screen in post. Another possible culprit if Canon's compression and MOV wrapper for videos. Ultimately, moving to a camera like the EOS 6R might be the way to go to get more video output options.
@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 2 года назад
@@ProfessorV. Yeah there are native ISOs for each cam so you should definitely experiment with all of them under 640 and see if it makes any difference. This Sigma is really good with a nice range and better price than the 20mm amzn.to/3kDtzHL you might be able to pick one up used. You can see my review here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hRvrPIVhVR0.html I shot in a dark museum (starts at 6:50) and it did a great job, it was on my 60D...ignore the lack of IS;) In the 70D you also have different quality settings so try the other to see if it does a better job on green screen.

I think you'd get better results from using manual focus rather than autofocus. With manual focus, you can leave it focused on one point so that the camera doesn't start hunting for a focus point randomly during the recording.

When you have set it all up to your desire when you go to switch off and turn back on again later will you have to re do every setting from the start or does it save the settings you have chosen? Thanks, Justin. It's tricky cause I haven't tried all lenses but it also really depends on the style of shooting you are doing. I love this lens as an all around lens podhelp.me/Canon35f2ISBH its prime with image stabilization. A lot of people love the Art line from Sigma, this is a very unique zoom lens that has large aperture and looks awesome podhelp.me/sigma1835f18 but if you're shooting handheld, you'd want IS. The other Sigma lenses are great too but Canon's own STM lenses are built to be used with the AF system on the 70D. Lots of great options.

@RayOrtega
@RayOrtega 8 лет назад
For this video I used both the 70D (shots where you don't see the 70D) and the 60D (shots where you see the 70D). I checked out some of your videos and you look great. I don't think a different lens will make a big difference. That 18-135 is actually pretty nice, just limited by its aperture. I think you'll get bigger improvements by trying to make the space you're in visually more interesting. So if you can get a deep background, not a wall right behind you, and drop the background out of focus a little by using your largest aperture and put the camera a little further away from you and zoom in a little, these will help the overall look. Lighting is the most important as well and you look like you are using natural light quite well.

Sports is defintely better shot at 60fps but it's probably not a deal breaker. Try 30fps and increase your shutter a little more to see if things are smoother on pans and sharper.
