Black Magic has never performed well on the Cine D lab test and outside of loving them for affordable pricing there's a reason why the camera never shows up on any Sundance List in Narratives or Documentaries. If you're a Black Magic user it makes since why you stick with BM but outside of that the lack of 3:2 mode has never been a problem
@@KamalJones many cameras haven’t done well on the CineD test and still went on to be used on major productions. Their tests are not biblical and shouldn’t be treated as such. They’re just information for you to take about the camera. You are right Blackmagic is not known to be on big sets. But they most certainly have been used on major blockbuster and major IP projects For one the OG pocket cameras were used on the Avengers Age of Ultron and there’s video out showing Jon Favreau using the Ursa Mini on the Mandalorian Season One set. I also do know from first hand people who are winning major awards for projects filmed on the Ursa Cameras. What Blackmagic is doing with the Ursa Cine is to change the narrative of their cameras. Will they? We don’t know only time will tell.
@@JamesJacksonFilmzfirst much respect to your content and love seeing US in this space, with that said back to spades lol! … there’s not one professional DP who criticized cineD testing as it’s the most thorough unless you have another suggestion. Avengers use so many cameras including 5D mark 3 and as an experienced Canon shooter that camera was trashed compared to a6400 which was not used so can’t use that to as point. 3. It Ain’t hard to verify my status in the industry so to my first hand knowledge BM is not in the ball park of being on award winning sets as Canon and that’s FACTUAL!!!
@@KamalJones Thank you and appreciate that comment but i believe you misread what I wrote. I never said anything critical about Cined lab test. I simply said it’s just information and should be treated as that. Personal too many people judge their camera pursuits on numbers instead of actually using the camera. And again I never said BM was on as many award projects as Canon. I actually agreed with you. My point BM is trying to make inroads and that I already know they are on sets and I also know people personally have gone through film festivals and won multiple awards for their documentary shot on Blackmagic cameras. Canon for a while held down the documentary field but now Sony has made in roads and now Blackmagic is giving it a go. Again will they? We don’t know but we shall see if things change with the Ursa Cone 12k
I’m loving the lowlight capabilities of this camera. The c400 has everything I love about the canon image but in a low light monster of a camera. Film grain-like noise pattern and an image I don’t have to fix. I definitely wish it had the modularity of a red DSMC2. Lower priced Interchangeable mounts would be awesome. I’d like to see it be used on more high end productions, since the original c500 was the studio filmmaking world when it came out.
Buy the Canon for the colors, auto focus, and reliability🤌🏾 I still hate myself for switching from my Canon XL2 to Sony NX5U. The people on RU-vid are just giving their opinions, which you have take as unreliable information. I fell for it and got the Sony A7 and the Sony Flash over the Canon 5D Mark III, another waste of money mistake. I switched back to Canon and got their native L lens much more happier with the results. I still use my Canon C100 Mark II and Canon R6 to make short videos 🤌🏾 still one of the best cameras to have in my opinion. I’m saving up to upgrade to RF glass and R6 Mark III or R5C body. Not falling for the Sony hype again, cost me nearly 15K.
Coming from a c70 with extra batts, cards and RF glass - the c400 is very tempting… There’s a lot to like here, but it’s an easier sell when you’re already in the canon eco system :)
6K FF is okay, (have one) but C400 is in so many way a better workhorse. Would love a Ursa Cine that I can afford and power without an AC. (V-mount and the price of a C400) I have no interest in Pyxis to be honest, and the 12K S35 is a dead horse.
It's good to see a dynamic range comparison between the c400 and c500II. I would think that the new BSI sensor should have less noise floor or highlight rooloff
@@JamesJacksonFilmz Yes, I understand you perfectly. I downgraded to the FX30, it does everything I need for a fraction of the cost, not for everyone of course. Don't you feel that there are tons of options out there right now in every brand. Maybe the camera switch days are over. Don't you think?
@@nyambe I agree that there are a ton of options out there for people to choose and won’t regret it. I do however feel the brand switching will continue, one RU-vidrs will do it for clicks and views, but the main and real reason is people’s perspective on filmmaking and career paths will always change and that could change what they need and or want in a brand’s camera.

hey james great video quick question would you rather the large format full frame global shutter feature that's in the raptor x or 3:2 open gate feature coming from the new 12k large format sensor in blackmagic 12k cine
Great question! While the large format global shutter is nice, the 3:2 Open Gate feature will be my choice. My reason: the variety of lenses, delivery options as well as composition options that I can play with appeal to me as a filmmaker and an artist. It’s “almost limitless”. I don’t move my cameras that much where rolling shutter will be a problem. Even if there was a situation where I did need to, there’s so many affordable rolling shutter options out there for those select moments.

@@mcneilbelle I agree. But don’t just go off my word for validation. At the end of the day we all are our own individual visionaries. You should make sure whatever camera you go with makes !Cents! Especially these higher end higher priced cameras.
Am I crazy for wanting to sell my 1 year old FX9 in order to get a Canon C400? The C400 does everything my FX9 does and more. All this while being smaller, lighter, and way less power hungry.
Not crazy at all. If it makes “cents”, then you should consider it. All I will say is try and rent one if you can before going all in. Remember to use post hype clarity 🤫😀😃
@@JamesJacksonFilmz yeah you’re right! I never use my FX9 for live work where all the SDI ports might come in handy. Mainly I do corporate videos and commercials. My main issue with the FX9 is that I must crop in on the sensor to get slowmo, and once I do that I lose the amazing autofocus. With that said the camera loses its main point by being full frame for me. I reached out to several places to see how much I could get for my FX9 if I traded it in for a C400, and 3 out of 5 places didn’t want it at all. They said that FX9 sales have dropped to almost zero. That makes me sad but also realizing that if I am ever to trade it in it should perhaps be now before the price gets crazy low. FX9 delivers a great image but at quite some compromises. The C400 is (IMO) almost a Burano in many ways but way cheaper.

Odd thing is, I got tired and waiting for a c70 mk2 so I started investing in lidar and cine glass and what’s really impressive about it is that the footage looks great, but it doesn’t look like typical canon footage. I want the 400 now for the best of both worlds, plus the 6k super res into a 4k workflow and all the added connection benefits from the larger body.
